How soon are people seeing updates after ID.me phone verification? Any timeline for returns moving again?

I had to verify my identity with the IRS back in mid-July after my tax return got flagged for some reason. The agent had me do the ID.me verification while on the phone with her, which was actually pretty quick. She told me that my return would now be processed but couldn't give me any timeframe for when I'd see movement. It's been about three weeks now and my transcript still shows no updates whatsoever. My Where's My Refund tool just says it's still being processed. Getting anxious since I was counting on this money for some medical bills coming up. Has anyone gone through this recently? How long did it take after verification for your return to start moving again? I filed back in April so it's been almost 4 months of waiting already.

I went through this exact situation in March. Had to verify through ID.me and the agent told me the same thing - that they couldn't provide a timeline. For me, it took about 4 weeks after verification before I saw any movement on my transcript. The first update was a 971 code (notice issued) followed by an 846 deposit code about a week later. The standard processing time they're telling people is 9 weeks after verification, but I've seen it happen faster for many folks. The one thing I'd recommend is checking your transcript twice a week - Wednesdays and Fridays is when most updates happen. Also, don't rely on the Where's My Refund tool - it's usually behind the actual transcript updates. Hang in there - once you've verified, you're definitely in the pipeline! The backlog is still pretty bad this year, but movement is happening.

Thanks for sharing your timeline! I'll start checking on Wednesdays and Fridays. Did you get any letters in the mail during those 4 weeks of waiting?

0 coins

No problem! Yes, I did get a letter about 3 weeks in - just confirming my identity was verified. The deposit came about 7-8 days after that letter. Hope you see movement soon!

This is super helpful! I verified mid-June and just got the 971 code yesterday. So excited to be moving forward finally 🙌

I recently discovered taxr.ai and it's been a game changer for understanding what's happening with my tax refund situation. After my ID verification, I was still confused about all the codes showing up on my transcript. The tool analyzed everything and explained what each code meant and what to expect next. It even caught something I missed - a small math error that could have delayed things further. It actually predicted the exact date my refund would be released and it was spot on! So much easier than trying to decode cryptic IRS notices and transcript codes on my own. https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

0 coins

It does a lot more than just read the transcript! You upload your transcript or IRS letter and it analyzes everything - explains all the codes, catch issues, tells you what's happening with your specific situation, and gives actual next steps. It even shows you a timeline of what's happened and what to expect next. Seriously made the whole process way less stressful than all the googling I was doing before.

OMG I just tried this and it's AMAZING! After weeks of stressing about my return and trying to interpret all those stupid codes, this told me exactly what was happening and when I could expect my refund. The timeline feature was super helpful - showed me exactly where I was in the process. Thanks for recommending this!

How secure is it though? I'm always nervous about sharing my tax info with random sites.

0 coins

I was worried about that too but they never ask for your SSN or any super personal info. You just upload your transcript which already has sensitive stuff removed/masked. And they explain everything about their security on the site.

After weeks of trying to get thru to the IRS the normal way, I finally got desperate and used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me a callback from an actual IRS agent within like 2 hours. Seriously saved my sanity! The agent confirmed my identity right away and told me exactly what was going on with my return. My transcript updated literally the next day with a DDD. Best money I ever spent to finally get my questions answered instead of waiting another month to maybe get through on the phone.

sounds sus tbh... they actually got you through to a real person? the IRS phonelines are impossible

0 coins

I was skeptical too, but yeah, it actually works. They use some tech that keeps redialing until they get through, then they hold your place in line and call you back when an agent is available. Talking to an actual agent got my refund moving after being stuck for 3 months.

Does this work for amended returns too? Been waiting 11 months and cant get anyone on the phone 😭

0 coins

Yep it works for any IRS phone line! A friend used it for an amended return issue last month. Got answers right away after trying for weeks to get through.

I verified my identity back in May and it took exactly 6 weeks to the day to see any updates on my transcript. Then once it updated, I got my refund deposited 8 days later. Seems like 4-8 weeks is the average timeframe from what I've seen on here. The IRS is still dealing with major backlogs from the past few years.

6 weeks 😩 i'm only 2 weeks in and already going crazy checking WMR every morning

0 coins

Lol I know that feeling all too well! Try to resist checking WMR - it'll just drive you nuts. It rarely updates until right before the deposit anyway. The transcript is more reliable.

same boat, verified 3 weeks ago and nothing yet... good to know there's a light at the end of the tunnel at least!

Mine took 5 weeks after ID verification to start moving, then another week to get the refund. But my sister verified the same week and got hers in 3 weeks total. I think it depends on how complex your return is too. If you have self-employment income or certain credits it seems to take longer.

The IRS is straight trash this year 🗑️ I verified in February, didn't see movement until June!!! 4 whole months of checking my transcript every day like a clown 🤡 Then suddenly one day it just updated with all the codes at once and the money showed up 3 days later. No rhyme or reason to their process at all. Good luck y'all

FOUR MONTHS??? omg I would've lost my mind

0 coins

trust me I did lmao. and the best part? they owed me like $7k and didn't even pay interest on it after making me wait that long 😤

0 coins

They definitely should've paid interest! If it's been more than 45 days from April 15th (or when you filed if later), they're required to pay interest!

0 coins

wait for real? how do I claim that??

0 coins

It should be automatic! Check your transcript - look for a code 776. That's interest paid to you. If you don't see it, you should call and ask about it.

I went through ID verification on June 2nd, and I just got my refund on August 11th... so about 10 weeks total. But I did see movement on my transcript around week 7 with the 570 and 971 codes appearing. From what I've seen reading posts here, seems like the average is 6-8 weeks after verification, but some lucky people get it faster.

Another option to consider is contacting your local Taxpayer Advocate Service. I was in your exact situation last year - verified identity, then crickets for 2 months. I reached out to TAS and they were able to push my return through in about 3 weeks. They can't help everyone (they're also backlogged), but if you have that medical hardship you mentioned, that might qualify you for their assistance. Worth a shot!

0 coins

Thanks for the suggestion! I didn't even think about TAS. Do I just google my local office?

0 coins

Yep! Just google "Taxpayer Advocate Service [your state]" and it should pop up. Call them and explain your situation including the medical bills - that's considered a hardship case which they prioritize.

The entire system is completely broken. I had to verify thru id.me in March. My transcript didnt update until july. Then they said I made a math error (I DIDNT) and adjusted my refund down by $1200. Called and they said theres nothing they can do - I'd have to file an amended return which takes ANOTHER 20 weeks to process...and will probably just get rejected anyway. Meanwhile they're hiring 87,000 new agents but cant figure out how to answer the damn phone or process returns in under 6 months. Make it make sense!!!

0 coins

This makes my blood boil. They always screw up in THEIR favor somehow. Never the other way around. 😡

0 coins

Those 87,000 new agents are mostly replacing retiring staff, not actually increasing capacity. But yeah the system is completely broken.

0 coins

yeah whatever i just want my money. they act like its a privilege for them to give us OUR OWN MONEY back. i'm so over it

Pro tip: If you have access to your transcript, look for Transaction Code 570 (refund hold) followed by TC 571 (hold released). Once you see 571, it usually means they've resolved whatever issue caused them to flag your return. After that, you'll typically see an 846 code (refund issued) within a week or two. For most people after ID verification, it's taking about 8 weeks to see those 570/571 codes, then another week for the 846. But I've definitely seen some people get lucky and have it processed much faster.

0 coins

This is super helpful! I just checked and don't have any of those codes yet. Still waiting I guess. Thanks for the info!

Has anyone noticed it seems to go faster if you verify over the phone vs. online? My husband and I filed jointly but both had to verify separately. I did mine online and he called in. His side was verified and processed within 3 weeks while mine took almost 7 weeks to complete. Seemed weird since it was the same return!

0 coins

Yes!!! Phone verification seems to be faster from what I've seen too. My theory is that when you verify with an actual person, they can push some button on their end that moves things along faster.

I think its random tbh. I did phone verification and still waited 9 weeks 🤷‍♀️

I'm in a similar situation - verified through ID.me about 5 weeks ago and still no movement on my transcript. The waiting is really stressful, especially when you need the money for important expenses like your medical bills. From reading everyone's experiences here, it sounds like the timeline is all over the place - some people get updates in 3-4 weeks, others wait 2-3 months or more. One thing that's helped me stay sane is checking my transcript on Wednesdays and Fridays like someone mentioned earlier, rather than obsessing over it daily. I've also been keeping a log of when I verified and any updates so I can track the timeline better. The hardest part is not knowing if there's an issue or if it's just sitting in a queue somewhere. But seeing all these success stories gives me hope that movement will happen eventually. Hang in there - you're definitely not alone in this frustrating process!

I'm going through the exact same thing! Verified through ID.me about 3 weeks ago and checking my transcript obsessively. The Wednesday/Friday checking schedule is such good advice - I've been looking every single day and it's driving me crazy. Thanks for sharing your experience and for the encouragement. It really does help to know we're all in this together waiting for updates. Hopefully we both see movement soon! 🤞

I'm in a very similar situation - verified through ID.me about 6 weeks ago after my return was flagged, and still seeing absolutely no movement on my transcript. The agent told me the same thing about it being processed but no timeline. It's so frustrating not knowing if there's an actual issue or if it's just sitting in some digital pile somewhere. What's really getting to me is that I filed in early March, so we're looking at almost 6 months total now. I've been following the Wednesday/Friday checking schedule that others mentioned, which has helped my sanity a bit compared to checking daily. Has anyone here had success calling the IRS after verification to get an update? I'm wondering if it's worth trying to get through to someone or if they'll just tell me to keep waiting. The uncertainty is almost worse than just knowing it would take X amount of time. Really hoping we all see movement soon - this whole process has been such a nightmare this year!

I'm going through almost the exact same timeline as you! I also verified through ID.me about 6 weeks ago and my transcript is still showing nothing. Filed in early April so I'm at the 5 month mark now which is just ridiculous. From what I've read here, calling after verification usually doesn't help much - they just tell you to wait the standard 9 weeks. But some people have had luck with the Taxpayer Advocate Service if you have a hardship situation. The Wednesday/Friday checking schedule has definitely saved my sanity too! It's so frustrating not knowing if something is wrong or if we're just stuck in the endless queue. But seeing all these success stories in this thread gives me hope that our time is coming. Hang in there - we've made it this far! 💪
