Still waiting for IRS verification letter after 6 weeks - what's the typical timeframe?

I filed my taxes on March 3rd and got a message that my return was accepted. But then on April 10th the IRS sent me a notice saying they needed to verify my identity before processing my refund. The notice said I should expect a verification letter in the mail within 2-3 weeks. It's now been almost 6 weeks and still nothing in my mailbox. When I check Where's My Refund it just says my return is still being processed. Has anyone else experienced this? Is this normal or should I be concerned? I'm expecting around $1,750 back and really need it for some car repairs.

The IRS is running extremely behind schedule this year. Identity verification letters are taking much longer than their stated timeframes. Based on what I've seen with my clients, these letters are currently taking 6-10 weeks to arrive instead of the promised 2-3 weeks. Your best option right now is to be proactive. You can try calling the Identity Verification line directly at 800-830-5084, but the wait times are very long. Another option is to create an ID.me account and verify your identity online through the IRS website. Sometimes you can complete the verification process without waiting for the letter. Keep checking Where's My Refund daily as the status can change without notification. If it's been more than 8 weeks since you filed, you can request a taxpayer advocate to help.

Thank you so much! I didnt know about the ID.me option. I'll try that right away. Is there a specific place on the IRS website I should go to set that up?

0 coins

Yes, go to IRS.gov and search for "Identity Verification" or go directly to the "Identity Verification Service" section. You'll need to create an ID.me account if you don't already have one. Make sure you have your government ID, Social Security card, and recent tax return info handy. Good luck!

I had this exact issue and finally got my letter after 9 weeks!! So annoying. The verification process took like 5 minutes once I had the letter. My refund arrived 12 days after verification. Hang in there!

0 coins

9 weeks?! That's ridiculous. But at least you got yours eventually. Did you try calling them at all during that time?

0 coins

I tried calling 3 times but gave up after spending over an hour on hold each time without reaching anyone. Not worth the frustration tbh

Honestly the best way to understand what's happening with your tax situation is to use taxr.ai - it completely changed how I dealt with the IRS. Instead of waiting around confused, it analyzed my transcript and told me exactly what was happening and what my next steps should be. It even told me when my refund would arrive and was spot on! Way better than trying to decode the IRS website or those vague notices they send. I use it every time I need to check my tax status now. https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

0 coins

It does way more than just read your transcript. It analyzes all the codes and dates, explains what each one means specifically for YOUR situation, and gives you a timeline of what's happened and what to expect next. It also tells you if there are any issues you need to address. I was stuck in verification hell for months and it showed me exactly what was happening when the IRS website just said "still processing" 🙄

OMG I just tried taxr.ai and it's INCREDIBLE!!! Literally answered every question I had about my delayed refund in seconds. The IRS has been holding my money because of an income verification issue I had no idea about! Now I know exactly what to do. THANK YOU for recommending this!!!

After waiting 5 weeks for my verification letter and getting nowhere with the IRS website, I finally used claimyr.com to get through to a real person at the IRS. Best decision ever! Instead of waiting on hold for hours, they got me a callback with an actual agent who fixed my verification issue on the spot. My refund was released a week later. Honestly, talking to a real person was the only way I solved this - worth every penny to finally get my questions answered and my refund processed.

0 coins

Is this some kind of scam? How does it even work?

0 coins

Not a scam at all. They basically navigate the IRS phone system for you and reserve a callback from an agent. You get a call when an agent is actually available instead of waiting on hold forever. The agent I talked to was super helpful and immediately saw what was wrong with my account.

0 coins

Can confirm it works. Used it last year when I had a similar issue. Got a callback in about 45 minutes and resolved everything in one call. The IRS phone system is basically impossible to navigate otherwise.

0 coins

How much does it cost tho? 🤔

0 coins

Honestly I don't even remember the exact amount - was just so relieved to finally talk to someone after weeks of frustration. Definitely saved me hours of time and stress, and getting my $2300 refund a month earlier was well worth it!

You should have received your verification letter a while ago. I would be concerned at this point. Try calling the IRS Taxpayer Protection Program at 800-830-5084. When you call, have your tax return, SSN, and filing status ready. Fair warning tho: you'll probably spend a long time on hold.

i'd be LIVID waiting that long for a simple letter! that's just ridiculous. the irs is completely broken this year... i filed in february and didn't get my refund until last week. and of course they didn't pay me any interest for holding my money for 3 months 🙄 typical government efficiency lol

0 coins

Actually they do pay interest if they hold your refund more than 45 days after the filing deadline! Check your transcript - you might have gotten interest.

0 coins

wait really?? gonna check right now.. they better have paid me something for all this hassle

The IRS is a total disaster this year. I filed in January and had to wait 4 months for my refund because of "verification" issues. The letter took over 7 weeks to arrive! My advice - call the Taxpayer Advocate Service at 877-777-4778. They can help cut through the nonsense and check on the status of your letter. Keep detailed records of all your calls and interactions with the IRS. And whatever you do, DON'T file a second return - that will make things much worse.

Have you moved recently or changed your address? Sometimes the letters get lost if your address isn't updated everywhere. Also check if the letter maybe went to an old address? Just a thought.

0 coins

No I've been at the same address for 3 years and all my mail is coming fine. That's what's so frustrating!

0 coins

Seems like everyone is dealing with irs delays this year 🤦‍♀️ We're all in the same boat buddy. My advice: expect everything to take 2-3x longer than they say. I'm on week 14 waiting for a simpler refund!!!

0 coins

Week 14??? Omg that's insane! Have you called them?

0 coins

Called 8 times. Got through twice. Both times they just said "still processing" and to keep waiting 😂 I literally laughed at the last agent who told me that

0 coins

That's absolutely ridiculous! The system is so broken.

0 coins

I went through this exact same thing last year. The letter took 8 weeks to arrive. Once I got it and verified my identity, the refund came about 3 weeks later. So frustrating but just hang tight, it'll come eventually. The verification process itself was pretty quick once I had the letter.

0 coins

I never received my letter at all!! After waiting 2 months, I finally called the IRS Taxpayer Protection Program and they were able to verify me over the phone. Call 800-830-5084, but be prepared to wait at least an hour on hold. Have last year's return handy, along with this year's info. They'll ask a bunch of verification questions.

0 coins

Did you need any specific documents when you called? Last time I tried they asked for stuff I didn't have on hand and it was a waste of time.

0 coins

They asked for: SSN, filing status, address, birthdate, and the exact amount of my refund from last year's return. Also asked about some specific deductions I claimed this year. So have all your tax docs ready!

0 coins

If u dont get a letter soon, try using the website route. Go to irs.gov and use the "Verify Your Identity" tool. You'll need to create an ID.me account which is a pain in the butt but its quicker than waiting for a letter that might never come. I did this after waiting 5 weeks and got my refund 2 weeks later.

My guy, check your spam folders irl. Some of these government letters look like junk mail. Small white envelope with just a return address in the corner. Also double check your name/address on your return- any typos can cause major delays. Good luck!

0 coins

Double checked all my mail including what I thought was junk. Nothing from the IRS at all. And my address is def correct - I checked my return copy. So annoying!

0 coins

This happened to me and I had to call the IRS every single day for two weeks straight before I finally got through to someone. The secret is to call right when they open at 7am EST. I finally got my verification done over the phone and didn't need the letter at all. The whole system is ridiculous.

0 coins

I know this sounds crazy, but check with your local post office directly. My verification letter got stuck there and was never delivered. The postal worker found it sitting in a bin when I went in and asked about IRS mail. Worth a shot if you're desperate!

0 coins

Could your letter have been sent to a previous address? I had this problem when I moved - verification letter went to my old place even though I had updated my address with the IRS. Took forever to sort out.

0 coins

Nope, been at this address for years and filed from here last year too. All my other mail is arriving fine.

I'm going through the exact same thing right now! Filed in early March and got the identity verification notice in mid-April. It's been 7 weeks now and still no letter. The "Where's My Refund" tool is useless - just keeps saying "still being processed." I called the 800-830-5084 number twice but gave up after being on hold for over 90 minutes each time. This is so frustrating when you're counting on that money! Based on what everyone else is saying here, it seems like 8-10 weeks is becoming the new normal unfortunately. I'm going to try the ID.me route that Dylan mentioned - hopefully that works faster than waiting for this phantom letter to show up.

0 coins

I feel your pain! Same exact timeline here - filed early March, got the verification notice in April, and now it's been 6+ weeks with nothing. The whole system seems completely overwhelmed this year. I'm definitely going to try the ID.me option too after reading Dylan's suggestion. At least that gives us something proactive to do instead of just sitting around waiting for a letter that may never come. Let me know if the online verification works for you! Fingers crossed we both get this resolved soon.

I'm in the exact same situation! Filed in early March, got my verification notice around the same time as you in April, and now it's been 7 weeks with no letter. The frustrating part is that "Where's My Refund" just keeps saying the same thing - "still being processed." I've tried calling the 800-830-5084 number twice but couldn't get through after waiting over an hour each time. Reading through everyone's experiences here, it seems like 8-10 weeks is unfortunately becoming the new normal for these letters. I'm definitely going to try the ID.me verification route that Dylan mentioned - seems like our best bet for getting this resolved without waiting indefinitely for a letter that might never show up. Really hoping we can get this sorted soon because I'm counting on that refund money too!

0 coins

Wow, it's both reassuring and frustrating to see so many of us in the exact same boat! I'm also dealing with this - filed in March, got my verification notice in April, and now going on 7 weeks with no letter. At this point I'm convinced the IRS is just making up those "2-3 week" timeframes. I'm definitely going to try the ID.me option that Dylan suggested since it seems like our only chance of moving things forward. The thought of waiting another month or more for a letter that might get lost in the mail is just too stressful when you really need that money. Thanks for sharing your experience - at least we know we're not alone in this mess!
