846 Code on Transcript Since 11/1 but No Refund - WMAR Shows Adjusted?
I'm freaking out a little here! 😫 I amended my 2023 return back on 9/27 and my transcripts have shown an 846 code (refund issued) with a date of 11/5 since 11/1. Today the Where's My Amended Return tool finally updated to show 'adjusted' but I STILL haven't seen my refund hit my account! Do they just mail checks on the actual date shown in the 846 code? I really need this money for some medical bills that are piling up. Has anyone else experienced this delay? Should I be worried?? Any help would be SO appreciated!

I feel your pain completely. The 846 code typically means your refund has been approved and scheduled, but there's a critical detail to know: if you filed an amended return (1040-X), the IRS almost always issues those refunds as paper checks, not direct deposits - even if you provided banking information. These checks are generally mailed exactly on the date shown in the 846 code (11/5 in your case), and then take 5-7 business days to arrive. Since today is November 10th, you're right in that window where it should be arriving any day now. The WMAR showing 'adjusted' is actually a good sign - it means processing is complete.

This is 100% accurate! I went through this exact situation last year. My transcript showed an 846 code on March 15th with a date of March 21st, and my check arrived in the mail on March 28th. According to the IRS website at https://www.irs.gov/refunds/amended-return-refund-information, they specifically state that amended return refunds are issued as checks. Hang in there!

I meticulously tracked my amended return refund last year, and found that USPS delivery timelines were the biggest variable. The IRS uses standard USPS first class mail for these checks, which means 3-5 business days under normal conditions, but up to 7-10 during high volume periods. Given the current tax season's processing backlog, delivery might be on the longer end of that spectrum.

It might be worth checking if your mail delivery has been reliable lately? Sometimes these checks can get lost or delayed in the postal system, especially if you've recently moved or if there are delivery issues in your area. It seems like you're probably still within the normal timeframe, but it's always good to consider all possibilities.

This is excellent advice. I'd also suggest checking your mailbox daily and making sure your name is clearly marked on it. When my amended refund check came last year, it was in a very plain envelope that looked almost like junk mail - just a standard Treasury envelope with a window address. I almost threw it away by mistake!

Been there, done that, got the delayed check to prove it! 😂 The IRS is notorious for this amended return check situation. Last year I waited 12 days after my 846 date before panicking. If you need to confirm where things stand, don't waste your time with the regular IRS number - I spent 3 hours on hold before giving up. I used Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) and got through to an actual human at the IRS in about 15 minutes who confirmed my check had been mailed on the date shown. Totally worth it for the peace of mind, especially when you're waiting on money for medical bills.

Does this service actually work? Seems sketchy. IRS phone system is terrible though.

How much did it cost? And did they actually get you to someone who could help with amended returns? Cuz last time I got thru to IRS they just transferred me 3x and I ended up nowhere!

I've used similar services before. Isn't it absurd that we have to pay a third party just to talk to the government agency we fund with our taxes? That said, I did use Claimyr for a different tax issue last month. It worked, but I wonder why we don't demand better service from the IRS in the first place? Wouldn't it be better if they just had adequate staffing?

Your situation follows the standard Amended Return Processing Protocol (ARPP). The system operates on a sequential timeline: 1. Processing completion (WMAR showing 'adjusted') 2. Refund authorization (846 code appearing) 3. Check printing (typically 1-2 business days after 846 date) 4. Mail distribution (USPS intake, usually 1 day after printing) 5. USPS delivery (3-7 business days) The critical timeframe is now. If you don't receive it by November 15th (which would be 7 business days after the 846 date), then you should initiate a Refund Trace Request using Form 3911. This must be done promptly as the trace process itself takes 6 weeks.

I don't think the IRS is telling the whole truth about these timeframes. My transcript showed an 846 date of October 3rd but I didn't get my check until October 24th. Almost everyone I know has had to wait longer than they say. The whole system is broken. I'd start calling them now rather than waiting - they might have sent it to an old address or there could be other issues.

Oh my gosh I'm going through the EXACT same thing right now!! 😩 My 846 date was 11/3 and I'm checking my mailbox like a crazy person every day! I'm so worried because I've read horror stories about checks getting lost. I've been refreshing the Informed Delivery app from USPS constantly to see if it shows up there before it arrives. This waiting is torture when you really need the money! I just keep telling myself that the government moves slowly and I shouldn't panic yet... but it's so hard!
