846 Code on Transcript Since 11/1 but No Refund - WMAR Shows Adjusted?

I'm freaking out a little here! 😫 I amended my 2023 return back on 9/27 and my transcripts have shown an 846 code (refund issued) with a date of 11/5 since 11/1. Today the Where's My Amended Return tool finally updated to show 'adjusted' but I STILL haven't seen my refund hit my account! Do they just mail checks on the actual date shown in the 846 code? I really need this money for some medical bills that are piling up. Has anyone else experienced this delay? Should I be worried?? Any help would be SO appreciated!

I feel your pain completely. The 846 code typically means your refund has been approved and scheduled, but there's a critical detail to know: if you filed an amended return (1040-X), the IRS almost always issues those refunds as paper checks, not direct deposits - even if you provided banking information. These checks are generally mailed exactly on the date shown in the 846 code (11/5 in your case), and then take 5-7 business days to arrive. Since today is November 10th, you're right in that window where it should be arriving any day now. The WMAR showing 'adjusted' is actually a good sign - it means processing is complete.

This is 100% accurate! I went through this exact situation last year. My transcript showed an 846 code on March 15th with a date of March 21st, and my check arrived in the mail on March 28th. According to the IRS website at https://www.irs.gov/refunds/amended-return-refund-information, they specifically state that amended return refunds are issued as checks. Hang in there!

I meticulously tracked my amended return refund last year, and found that USPS delivery timelines were the biggest variable. The IRS uses standard USPS first class mail for these checks, which means 3-5 business days under normal conditions, but up to 7-10 during high volume periods. Given the current tax season's processing backlog, delivery might be on the longer end of that spectrum.

It might be worth checking if your mail delivery has been reliable lately? Sometimes these checks can get lost or delayed in the postal system, especially if you've recently moved or if there are delivery issues in your area. It seems like you're probably still within the normal timeframe, but it's always good to consider all possibilities.

This is excellent advice. I'd also suggest checking your mailbox daily and making sure your name is clearly marked on it. When my amended refund check came last year, it was in a very plain envelope that looked almost like junk mail - just a standard Treasury envelope with a window address. I almost threw it away by mistake!

Been there, done that, got the delayed check to prove it! 😂 The IRS is notorious for this amended return check situation. Last year I waited 12 days after my 846 date before panicking. If you need to confirm where things stand, don't waste your time with the regular IRS number - I spent 3 hours on hold before giving up. I used Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) and got through to an actual human at the IRS in about 15 minutes who confirmed my check had been mailed on the date shown. Totally worth it for the peace of mind, especially when you're waiting on money for medical bills.

Does this service actually work? Seems sketchy. IRS phone system is terrible though.

0 coins

How much did it cost? And did they actually get you to someone who could help with amended returns? Cuz last time I got thru to IRS they just transferred me 3x and I ended up nowhere!

I've used similar services before. Isn't it absurd that we have to pay a third party just to talk to the government agency we fund with our taxes? That said, I did use Claimyr for a different tax issue last month. It worked, but I wonder why we don't demand better service from the IRS in the first place? Wouldn't it be better if they just had adequate staffing?

Your situation follows the standard Amended Return Processing Protocol (ARPP). The system operates on a sequential timeline: 1. Processing completion (WMAR showing 'adjusted') 2. Refund authorization (846 code appearing) 3. Check printing (typically 1-2 business days after 846 date) 4. Mail distribution (USPS intake, usually 1 day after printing) 5. USPS delivery (3-7 business days) The critical timeframe is now. If you don't receive it by November 15th (which would be 7 business days after the 846 date), then you should initiate a Refund Trace Request using Form 3911. This must be done promptly as the trace process itself takes 6 weeks.

I don't think the IRS is telling the whole truth about these timeframes. My transcript showed an 846 date of October 3rd but I didn't get my check until October 24th. Almost everyone I know has had to wait longer than they say. The whole system is broken. I'd start calling them now rather than waiting - they might have sent it to an old address or there could be other issues.

Oh my gosh I'm going through the EXACT same thing right now!! 😩 My 846 date was 11/3 and I'm checking my mailbox like a crazy person every day! I'm so worried because I've read horror stories about checks getting lost. I've been refreshing the Informed Delivery app from USPS constantly to see if it shows up there before it arrives. This waiting is torture when you really need the money! I just keep telling myself that the government moves slowly and I shouldn't panic yet... but it's so hard!

I completely understand your anxiety - waiting for money you desperately need is incredibly stressful! Based on what others have shared here, it sounds like you're still within the normal timeframe. Since your 846 date was 11/5 and today is around 11/10, you're right in that 5-7 business day window where most people receive their checks. The fact that WMAR finally updated to "adjusted" is actually a really good sign that everything is processing normally. I'd suggest setting up USPS Informed Delivery if you haven't already - it'll give you a preview of what's coming in your mail each day, which might help ease some of the anxiety of constantly checking your mailbox. Try to hang in there for a few more days before escalating. I know it's easier said than done when medical bills are piling up, but it really does sound like your refund is on its way! 🤞

This is such solid advice! I wish I had known about USPS Informed Delivery when I was going through this last year - would have saved me so much stress. One thing I'd add is that the Treasury checks often come in those plain white envelopes that don't look official at all, so definitely don't toss anything that looks remotely government-related. Also, if you're really anxious about it, you could try calling your local post office to see if they can tell you if a Treasury check is in transit to your address. Some offices are more helpful than others, but it's worth a shot for peace of mind!

I totally get the stress you're feeling! 😟 The waiting game with amended returns is absolutely nerve-wracking, especially when you need the money for medical expenses. From what everyone has shared here, it really sounds like you're still in the normal timeframe - your 846 date of 11/5 means the check was likely mailed around that date, and with USPS delivery times, you should see it by mid-week at the latest. The fact that WMAR finally updated to "adjusted" is actually really encouraging - that means all the processing is done and your refund is definitely approved. I'd echo what others said about setting up USPS Informed Delivery if you haven't already - it'll at least let you know when something's coming so you're not anxiously checking the mailbox multiple times a day. Try to hang in there for a few more days before panicking. I know medical bills add so much pressure to the situation, but it really does sound like your money is on its way! 🤞

You're absolutely right about the stress factor! I went through this same exact situation earlier this year and the waiting was brutal. What helped me was remembering that the IRS is actually pretty reliable with these amended return checks - they just move at government speed. Since your transcript shows the 846 code, the hardest part (getting approved) is already done. The check printing and mailing is pretty much automatic at this point. I'd also suggest maybe calling your bank to double-check they don't have any pending deposits, just in case - sometimes there can be processing delays on their end too, though with amended returns they usually do send paper checks like everyone mentioned. Hang in there! 💪

I'm so sorry you're going through this stress, especially with medical bills weighing on you! 💙 From everything I've seen in this community, your situation is actually tracking pretty normally for an amended return. The 846 code with a 11/5 date plus WMAR showing "adjusted" means your refund is definitely approved and should have been mailed right around that date. Since today is about 11/10, you're still well within that 5-7 business day USPS delivery window everyone mentioned. I know the waiting is absolutely torture when you need the money, but try to give it until at least 11/15 before getting too worried. One thing that really helped me when I was in a similar situation was setting up USPS Informed Delivery - at least then you'll get a heads up the morning your check is coming instead of anxiously checking the mailbox multiple times a day. Also, keep an eye out for a very plain white Treasury envelope - it doesn't look official at all! Sending you good vibes that it shows up in the next few days! 🤞

Hey there! I totally understand your anxiety - I went through almost the exact same situation last year with my amended return. The combination of needing the money for medical expenses plus the uncertainty of when it'll actually arrive is incredibly stressful! 😰 From what I learned during my experience and what everyone here has shared, you're actually right on track. The 846 code with 11/5 date means your check was likely printed and mailed right around that time, and with typical USPS delivery being 5-7 business days, you should see it any day now. The WMAR showing "adjusted" is actually the final confirmation that everything went through successfully. I'd definitely recommend setting up USPS Informed Delivery if you haven't already - it at least gives you a preview each morning of what's coming so you're not constantly wondering. Try to hang in there just a few more days - I know it's easier said than done when you're worried about bills, but it really sounds like your refund is on its way! 🤞

I can completely understand your stress - waiting for money you desperately need while watching an 846 code sit there is incredibly frustrating! 😣 From what everyone has shared here and my own experience, you're actually still within the normal timeframe. Since your 846 date was 11/5 and it's now around 11/10, you're right in that 5-7 business day USPS delivery window. Also watch for a very plain white Treasury envelope that honestly looks like it could be junk mail.
