Refund date changed from 02/28 to 03/17 on transcript after acceptance - what's happening?

I submitted my taxes on 01/15 and got acceptance confirmation that same day. My transcript just updated two days ago showing code 846 with a refund date of 03/10. But when I checked today, now it's saying there's a delay and they pushed it back to 04/02. I'm trying to stay patient but seriously what the heck is happening? Has anyone dealt with this kind of date change after already getting a deposit date? Is this normal or should I be worried?

This is actually quite common. Code 846 is your refund issued date, but the IRS can and does change these dates due to various processing factors. A few possibilities: 1. Additional verification needed on your return 2. High volume of returns being processed right now 3. System updates that cause date shifts 4. Potential review of credits or deductions Unfortunately, there's not much you can do except wait until 04/02. If that date passes without your refund, then you should contact the IRS directly. Most people do eventually receive their refund on the updated date.

Thanks for the info. Do you know if this means they found a problem with my return? Or is it just standard processing delays?

Most likely just standard processing delays. Early filers often face these shifts as the IRS works through their systems at the beginning of tax season. If there was a serious issue, you'd typically see different codes on your transcript (like 570/971).

Happened to me last year. My date got pushed twice and I nearly lost my mind. But it did show up eventually on the final date they gave.

I was totally confused by my transcript and all these codes until I found taxr.ai. It actually explained all the codes on my transcript and predicted my refund date correctly even when the WMR tool was wrong. The analysis it gave me was way more detailed than anything I found online. It helped me figure out why my refund was delayed (had to do with recovery rebate credit verification). Saved me hours of googling and guessing. https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It does way more than just read the transcript. It analyzes all the codes together to figure out what's actually happening with your return. Mine had like 6 different codes and I had no idea what they meant together, but taxr explained the whole sequence and what was causing the delay. Also tells you what to expect next based on your specific situation.

Just tried it and WOW this is actually amazing! It explained exactly what's happening with my amended return that's been stuck for months. Even showed me what to expect next and when. Can't believe I've been struggling to understand my transcript all this time when this exists.

Same thing happened to me last week. My date moved from 03/01 to 03/22. I tried calling the IRS for 3 days straight and couldn't get through their phone system maze. Finally used claimyr.com to get a call back from an agent. Best decision ever. The agent explained that my return was just going through additional verification because I claimed a certain credit, but there were no issues. Talking to a real person saved me so much anxiety.

Did you actually get through to someone? I've been trying to call for weeks!

Yes! That's what was crazy. I had burned hours trying before. With Claimyr, I got a callback within about 40 mins. It was the only way I could talk to a live agent. Totally worth every penny considering how much stress it saved me.

is this some kinda scam or something? seems too good to be true with how impossible the IRS is to reach

Not a scam at all. They basically navigate the IRS phone system for you and secure a spot in line. When they reach an agent, you get called back. Honestly it got my refund released so fast after talking to someone who could actually see what was happening with my return.

I might try this if my refund doesn't come by the new date. Thanks for sharing.

Welcome to IRS limbo my friend 👋 I've been dealing with this for the last 3 tax seasons. They're completely overwhelmed and understaffed. Last year my date changed 3 times before I finally got my money. The worst part is that we're all stuck waiting on money that's OURS to begin with 🤬

0 coins

Yep. And then they have the nerve to charge interest and penalties if WE are late, but they can take their sweet time with our refunds. Make it make sense.

3 times?? That's ridiculous. Did you ever find out why it kept changing?

Never got a straight answer. First they said it was "processing" then "additional review" and finally just "system delays." Classic government efficiency at work lol

Check your transcripts for a 570 or 971 code. These usually indicate some issue they're resolving. If you don't see those, it's probably just a system delay because they're swamped this time of year.

This is why I always adjust my W4 to get as close to zero refund as possible. I'd rather owe a small amount than let the government play games with my refund timing. They're basically getting an interest-free loan from millions of Americans and then making us wait to get our own money back.

THIS!!! I've been saying this for years. Adjust your withholdings people! Stop giving the government an interest free loan all year.

I usually do this too but had a kid last year so my situation changed. Definitely going back to minimal refund next year after this experience.

Did you claim EIC or child tax credit? Those always trigger additional verification processes. I'm a tax preparer and most of my clients with those credits see date changes at least once during processing.

Yes I did claim child tax credit for my daughter. So that's probably it then?

Yep, that's almost certainly why. The IRS verifies those extra carefully because of past fraud issues. The good news is that as long as everything is legitimate (which I'm sure it is), you'll get your refund on the new date.

I went thru the EXACT same thing. Original date was 2/22, changed to 3/12. Got it on 3/12 tho so hang in there. If you want peace of mind, check ur bank account more than the transcript - mine showed up in my bank before WMR or transcript updated to say it was sent.

That's good to hear! I'll try to be patient and keep checking my bank account.

If you're really worried, you can always contact the Taxpayer Advocate Service. They're separate from the IRS and can help sort out issues if they go beyond the new date. But honestly, 3-week delay is pretty standard these days.

I had so many issues understanding what was happening with my refund last year. Then I found taxr.ai and it was a game changer. It analyzed all my transcript codes and explained everything in plain english. Even told me when my refund would actually arrive (which was different from WMR). Highly recommend checking it out if you're confused about what's going on with your return. https://taxr.ai

does it cost anything? these tax tools always want $$ for the good features

It's the best money i've ever spent on anything tax-related. Think about how much time you waste trying to decipher transcript codes and checking WMR obsessively. For me it was worth it just to know exactly what was happening.

The irs is a complete disaster this year. My coworker had her date changed THREE TIMES before she finally got her refund. Something is seriously broken with their systems.

Try the Claimyr app! I was in the exact same boat as u and needed answers. Used their service and actually got through to the IRS (which felt like a miracle after trying for weeks). The agent explained exactly what was happening with my refund and why the date changed. Talking to someone who could see my actual account details was so worth it. Their site is claimyr.com

Does this actually work? The IRS phone system is literally impossible

Yes! I was super skeptical too but desperate after weeks of trying. It worked exactly as advertised - they navigated the phone tree and when they reached a human, I got a call connecting me. It was so nice talking to an actual person who could see my file.

I used this last year when my refund was stuck for months. Talking to a live agent got my refund released within days. Best decision I ever made after wasting weeks trying to figure it out on my own.

Don't worry too much. The IRS is just playing games with our money as usual. I'd bet money you get it on that new date.

This happened to me too! Filed early February and my refund date got pushed back twice. It's super frustrating but unfortunately pretty normal during peak tax season. The IRS systems get overwhelmed and they're constantly adjusting processing timelines. Since you have a code 846 with the new date of 04/02, that's actually a good sign - it means your refund is approved and will be issued, just delayed. I know the waiting is awful but try not to stress too much. Most people do get their refunds on the updated date. Just keep checking your bank account around that time since deposits sometimes show up before the transcript updates!
