IRS showed direct deposit date of 4/15 but still nothing on my Green Dot card

So I e-filed my taxes back on March 2nd. Got accepted right away. I checked my refund status on the IRS site and it finally updated on April 9th saying I would get a direct deposit on April 15th. It's now April 20th and still nothing has hit my Green Dot card. Transcript shows code 846 with the 4/15 date. Anyone else dealing with this? Should I be worried or just wait longer?

Jungleboo Soletrain

This happened to me last year. When the IRS indicates a deposit date, that's when they send the money to your bank or card provider. Then it can take 1-5 business days for the financial institution to process it and make it available. Since April 15th was a Monday, and it's now Saturday, I'd say give it until next Tuesday before panicking. If nothing by then, you should call Green Dot to see if they received the deposit and are holding it for some reason. Sometimes they place longer holds on government deposits, especially if this is a new account or your first tax refund going to it.

Thanks for the reassurance. I called Green Dot yesterday and they said nothing was pending. I'm stressing because rent is due next week and I was counting on this money.

Green Dot is notorious for delays. I switched to chime last year and never looked back. Much faster deposits.

I had this exact same issue and spent HOURS trying to get someone at the IRS on the phone. No luck. Eventually used claimyr.com to get a callback and found out my refund got sent to my old closed account. They helped me update it and got it reissued.

It's a service that gets you through to an actual IRS agent instead of waiting on hold forever. Best money I spent tbh. After 3 weeks of trying to call myself, I got connected in about an hour. They sorted my deposit issue right away.

Honestly, trying to figure out what's happening with your tax return is like solving a mystery with no clues. I was in the same situation last month and wasted so much time trying to decipher my transcript and calling the IRS (impossible!). I finally used this tool called taxr.ai that actually explained exactly what was happening with my return. It showed me WHY my refund was delayed and what to expect next. So much better than guessing or asking strangers on the internet. I use it every week now to track my refund progress. Check it out: https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It does wayyy more than just read the transcript. It analyzes all the codes and dates to tell you specifically what's happening, why there might be delays, and gives you a timeline for what to expect next. Mine showed that I had an offset I didn't know about that was holding things up. SAVED ME SO MUCH TIME OMG. Everyone dealing with tax issues needs to use this!

Trust me, I felt the same way! But after spending literal days trying to figure this stuff out myself, it was worth every penny. The peace of mind alone knowing exactly what was happening instead of stressing was worth it.

After weeks of frustration trying to find out why my refund hadn't hit my account despite having a deposit date, I finally found a way to get through to the IRS. Used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me a callback from an actual IRS agent! Found out my refund had been sent to an old closed account and they were able to fix it right there on the call. Definitely recommend if you're stuck like I was - talking to a real human at the IRS made all the difference.

I was super skeptical too but after trying for 3 weeks to get through on my own (and never getting past the automated system), this was the only thing that worked. The IRS agent actually laughed when I told her how long I'd been trying to reach someone. It was the best investment considering I was waiting on a $3400 refund that was stuck in limbo.

how much does something like that cost? seems weird to pay just to talk to the irs...

Honestly whatever they charge is worth it when you consider the alternative is literally HOURS on hold only to get disconnected. I spent 2 full workdays trying to call them myself. When you're waiting on thousands of dollars, paying for the service makes sense. And they don't charge if they can't get you through.

Did you check if your bank account/routing number is correct on your return? I had the same issue last year and realized I typed one digit wrong when I filed. Had to wait for the IRS to mail me a check which took like 6 more weeks šŸ˜

Its all a scam. The IRS is literally holding our money hostage and earning interest on it while we struggle to pay bills. They can give billionaires tax breaks but cant process our refunds on time. I'm still waiting for my 2022 refund!!!!

Actually, the IRS is required by law to pay interest on refunds that take longer than 45 days to process after the filing deadline. So if there's a significant delay, you'll get interest too.

that interest is like pennies compared to what banks charge us for overdrafts when our money doesnt arrive on time. not to mention late fees on bills etc. its criminal

Heres what you need to know about code 846: ā€¢ This is the official refund issued code ā€¢ The date attached to it is when the IRS sent the payment, not necessarily when you'll receive it ā€¢ Several things could be happening: - Green Dot may have a standard hold period for government deposits - The account info might be incorrect - There could be an offset (like back taxes or child support) that reduced or eliminated your refund - The IRS system sometimes shows 846 prematurely I would recommend calling the IRS directly at 1-800-829-1040 but lol good luck getting through. You'll probably be on hold for hours if you can even get in the queue. I've had better luck using taxr.ai to see exactly what's going on with my transcript and why my refund was delayed. https://taxr.ai saved me so much time trying to figure it all out.

Thanks for all the detail. I double checked my account info and it's def correct. No offsets that I know of either. Guess I'll try to call on Monday.

Green Dot is the worst for tax refunds. My friend had the same issue and it turned out they were holding it for "verification" but never bothered to tell him. Call and specifically ask if they have received it and are holding it.

Oh man, I didn't even think of that. Will definitely call them again and ask specifically about holds. Thanks!

the irs website says allow up to 21 days for refunds to hit accounts. has it been 21 days since your 846 date?

0 coins

-

Anna Xian

It's only been 5 days since the deposit date, so I guess I should be more patient. It's just stressful because I need the money.

I finally got my refund but it took 2 weeks after the deposit date on my transcript. What actually worked for me was getting in touch with an IRS agent through claimyr.com. They checked my account and told me exactly what was going on. Found out my refund was under review because of an address mismatch. The agent cleared it on the spot and I had my money 3 days later. Worth every penny to finally talk to someone who could actually help.

Possible reasons for the delay: 1. Bank/card verification process 2. Federal holidays slowing processing 3. IRS error or system delay 4. Weekend processing limitations 5. Fraud prevention measures The annoying reality is you just gotta wait or try to contact Green Dot AND the IRS. For direct help understanding what's actually happening with your return based on your transcript codes, use taxr.ai - it saved me hours of research.

I'm so tired of "just wait" being the default answer to everything with the IRS. We wait to file, wait for processing, wait for approval, wait for deposit, wait wait wait. Meanwhile bills don't wait!

OK real talk: if you filed with TT or HR Block and had fees taken out of your refund, your money goes to a temp account first, then to you. That adds days to the process. Did you have fees taken from your refund?

0 coins

-

Anna Xian

Yeah I did use TurboTax and had the fees taken out. I didn't realize that would add more time ugh

Yep that's probably your issue then. The money goes to a SBTPG account first, they take their cut, then send to your card. Check sbtpg.com to see the status (you'll need your TT info

Just checked SBTPG and it shows they received it on 4/15 and sent it to Green Dot on 4/17! So it should be there soon hopefully. Thanks for the tip!

WAIT. Check if your refund was offset for any reason! If you owe back taxes, student loans, child support, etc they'll take it from your refund. You should have gotten a letter about it, but sometimes those come after.

If you need to actually talk to a human at the IRS, I had success with claimyr.com. They got me a callback from the IRS and I was able to resolve a similar issue with my refund. Turns out there was a verification hold that I had no idea about, and once I talked to an agent it was resolved in minutes.

Sometimes the issue is actually BETWEEN the IRS and your card/bank. I spent weeks going back and forth - IRS said they sent it, Green Dot said they never got it. Total nightmare. Finally used taxr.ai to figure out exactly what codes were on my transcript and what they meant. Turned out there was a rejected deposit code I didn't know how to read. The tool explained everything and told me exactly what to do next. https://taxr.ai

YO CHECK YOUR TRANSCRIPT AGAIN! Sometimes they update the 846 date if there was an issue with the first deposit. Had this happen to me - saw an 846 for 3/12, nothing came, checked again and there was a new 846 for 3/26.
