Got 846 code with DDD 3/18 but no money in my account yet (used direct deposit with same bank)

Filed my return on February 12 and got accepted same day. WMR showed processing until March 3 when it finally updated to approved with a deposit date of March 18. I checked my transcripts and saw the 846 code with the same deposit date. Its now March 23 and still nothing in my bank account. I used the same bank account I've used for years for direct deposit, nothing has changed. Called the bank and they said they haven't received anything. Tried calling the IRS but can't get through. Anyone else having this problem? Should I be worried?

I work with tax issues and can explain what might be happening. When you see code 846 with a DDD (direct deposit date), it means the IRS has scheduled your refund, but several things could cause delays: • Your bank might be holding the deposit for a few days (common with some banks) • The IRS might have sent it to the wrong account (double-check all numbers on your return) • There could be an offset where part of your refund was applied to a debt • The IRS could have decided to mail a check instead of direct deposit (happens sometimes) Since it's been 5 days past your DDD, I recommend: 1. Call the IRS refund hotline at 800-829-1954 to check status 2. Verify your bank info on the return is correct 3. Check if you have any past debts that might trigger an offset 4. Watch your mail in case they sent a paper check If it goes beyond 2 weeks from your DDD, you should definitely try to speak with an IRS representative.

Thanks for the detailed info. I double checked my return and the bank info is definitely correct. I don't have any debts that would cause an offset either. I'll try the refund hotline.

The refund hotline is useless, it just gives you the same info as WMR. Your gonna need to talk to a real person.

This happened to me last year. Turned out they mailed me a check even tho I had direct deposit set up. Showed up like 3 weeks after my DDD.

That would be so frustrating. Did they ever explain why they mailed it instead?

Nope! Classic IRS move lol. When I finally got an agent on the phone they just said sometimes they convert to paper checks for "security reasons" 🙄

Hey I had this EXACT same problem and was pulling my hair out until someone recommended I use taxr.ai to decode my transcript. It showed me exactly why my deposit was delayed - had something to do with a verification hold that wasn't visible on the normal transcript! The tool explained everything in plain English and showed me exactly what I needed to do. Honestly it saved me days of stress and confusion trying to figure this out on my own. Check it out at https://taxr.ai - totally changed my approach to dealing with tax issues.

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It's AMAZING actually. You upload your transcript and it analyzes all those cryptic codes and tells you in plain English what's happening with your refund, any issues, and what to expect next. It even predicted when I'd get my money and was spot on! Way more detailed than anything else I've tried. I use it for everything tax-related now. It's like having a tax pro in your pocket.

I totally get the skepticism - I felt the same way! But it's legit - saved me from calling the IRS 50 times. My refund was stuck for weeks and the tool showed me exactly why (something about a review code I didn't understand). Unlike those generic tax sites that just show the same info as WMR.

After dealing with this same nightmare for two weeks, I finally got through to an actual IRS agent using Claimyr.com. The app got me a callback from the IRS without spending hours on hold. The agent told me my refund had been flagged for manual review but was released the same day after they verified my information. Talking to a real person got everything fixed in one call! Best decision ever after stressing for weeks about where my money was.

does that actually work? seems too good to be true

It honestly does work. I was super skeptical but was desperate after trying to call for days. They set up a callback and I got a real IRS agent within a couple hours. Worth every penny considering I was about to lose my mind trying to get through on my own.

Do you have to give them your personal information? Not sure I trust random apps with my tax details

They don't need any of your tax info! They just help connect the call. You talk directly with the IRS agent, not with them. It's just a calling service that gets you past the hold times.

I might try this. Been trying to get through to the IRS for days now with no luck.

Lol welcome to the club. Had a DDD of 3/12 and here we are. The IRS is a JOKE. Every year it's something different. They take our money instantly but when it's time to give it back suddenly everything moves at snail pace. 🤡

Sheesh I thought it was just me. Had a DDD of 3/5 and nothing til 3/21. No explanation whatsoever.

Check if ur return got reduced at all. Sometimes they send a letter explaining why but sometimes they don't. I had a missing stimulus credit they denied and it delayed my refund by 2 weeks past my DDD.

SAME BOAT!!! DDD of 3/18, no money, and the IRS won't answer. I checked my transcripts again today and noticed a 971 code dated 3/25 which means they're sending a notice. So now I gotta wait for some mysterious letter that will probably take another 2 weeks to arrive. This system is broken beyond belief.

Ugh, I need to check my transcript again to see if I have that code too. Thanks for the heads up!

I had that happen and the letter was just telling me they adjusted my refund by $2 because I did the math wrong lol. But it still delayed everything by 3 weeks.

I used taxr.ai to check my transcript yesterday and it explained that the 971 code was just an automatic notice about the adjustment. Got my deposit this morning! That tool is so helpful for decoding all this cryptic IRS stuff https://taxr.ai

This happened to me and it turned out they decided to mail a check even though I signed up for direct deposit. Never got any notification or explanation. Check came about 10 days after my DDD.

Have u checked your account transcript to see if theres other codes besides the 846? Sometimes there's additional codes that explain delays or adjustments or verification needs. Also check if your tax software took fees out of your refund - if so, it goes to a third party bank first which can add a few days.

I didn't have any fees taken out and I'm not seeing any other codes besides 846. Really weird. I'm going to keep trying to contact them.

My DDD was 3/15 and nothing happened until I went absolutely NUCLEAR on them. Called my congressperson's office, filed a taxpayer advocate case, and suddenly my money appeared. The system is designed to make you give up. Don't.

This is the way. The Taxpayer Advocate Service exists for exactly this reason. They can light a fire under the IRS when normal channels fail.

I tried the taxpayer advocate and they said they're not taking new cases unless you're experiencing "financial hardship" whatever that means. Apparently not getting YOUR OWN MONEY doesn't count 🤦‍♀️

Claimyr.com saved my life when I was in your exact situation. Got me a callback from an actual IRS agent who fixed my issue in 10 minutes. Found out they had flagged my account for "verification" but nobody had bothered to tell me. The agent cleared it on the spot and I had my refund 48 hours later. Without the call I'd still be waiting.

Is that service actually legit? I keep seeing people mention it

100% legit. I was waiting 6 weeks past my DDD with no explanation. The service got me a callback from the IRS within hours. Found out there was a simple verification issue that the agent fixed immediately. Money was in my account two days later. After wasting weeks trying to call myself, it was worth every penny.

OK so this is probly not what u want to hear but sometimes they do "random verification" and dont tell u. I had exact same situation last year and when I FINALLY got someone on phone after 3 weeks of trying, they said my refund was selected for random review but system never sent me notice. Got my $ like 2 days after that call.

Pro tip: the phone number on the IRS website is basically useless. Call 877-777-4778 instead. It's for the Taxpayer Advocate Service. They're way more helpful and can actually see what's going on with your refund. I spent 2 weeks trying the regular number with no luck, then got through on this one in 20 minutes.

I tried this number last week and they said they're not taking cases unless you can prove financial hardship 😑

Really? That sucks. Might depend on your local office. Mine was pretty helpful even though I wasn't in dire straits.
