Filed federal taxes on March 10th - got state refund but federal still processing?
I e-filed my taxes through TurboTax on March 10th and got confirmation that both federal and state were accepted within 24 hours. My state refund (about $790) hit my account last week, but the federal refund (around $3200) is still showing as processing when I check the Where's My Refund tool. It just says "Your tax return is still being processed. A refund date will be provided when available." I've checked my IRS transcript online but I don't know how to interpret all those codes. Has anyone else who filed around the same time already received their federal refund? Should I be worried at this point or is this normal timing? I was counting on that money for some home repairs.

This is pretty normal. The state and federal systems are completely separate. The IRS has been particularly slow this year with processing returns. I filed February 2nd and didn't receive my federal until the end of March, though my state came in 9 days. The "still processing" message is standard and doesn't necessarily indicate a problem. If your 21 days have passed since filing, you could try calling the IRS, but be prepared for long wait times. If you really need to get through to a human at the IRS, I'd recommend using Claimyr.com - it helped me get through to a live agent in about 20 minutes when I had a similar issue last year. Saved me hours of frustration.

•Thanks for the response! Yeah its been over 21 days now and I'm getting a bit anxious. Did calling the IRS actually help in your situation? Or did they just tell you to wait longer?

•When I called they actually gave me info that wasn't on the website - they said my return was flagged for identity verification (which I never got a letter about). Once I verified, my refund was issued within 10 days. Definitely worth calling if you're past the 21 days!

•What's this Claimyr thing? Is it really worth it? I've been trying to get through to the IRS for weeks with no luck.

•Absolutely worth it. I spent days trying to get through the normal way and kept getting disconnected. With Claimyr, they basically navigate the phone system for you and call you back when they've got an agent on the line. Best money I ever spent to resolve my tax issue instead of stressing for another month.

The best way to actually understand your transcript and what's going on with your return is to use taxr.ai - I was in the exact same situation last month with the "still processing" message and spent hours trying to decode my transcript. The tool analyzed everything and explained exactly what was happening with my return (turns out there was a review happening but nothing to worry about). It's insanely good! I use it every week to check for updates now instead of driving myself crazy with the Where's My Refund tool. https://taxr.ai

•Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

•It does WAY more than just read the transcript. It actually interprets all those weird IRS codes, explains what each date means, predicts when you'll get your refund based on your specific situation, and tells you if there are any issues you need to address. Completely changed my tax season experience. I was freaking out thinking something was wrong but taxr showed me everything was actually moving along normally, just slowly.

•Just tried it and WOW! This is exactly what I needed! Finally understand what's happening with my refund after weeks of confusion. Definitely recommend this to anyone dealing with IRS issues - worth every penny just for the peace of mind!

•There is a cost, but considering the hours of stress and confusion it saved me, plus actually understanding what was happening with my $3,400 refund, it was completely worth it. Way better than refreshing the IRS site 50 times a day lol

after trying to get thru to the irs for literal days on the phone, i used the claimyr.com app and finally talked to an actual person! they told me my return was delayed because they were verifying some income reported on my W-2. talking to the agent actually got my refund released within a week after that. if youre past the 21 day mark, definitely worth getting someone on the phone who can tell you exactly whats going on instead of that useless "still processing" message.

•This sounds like an ad 🙄 Does this actually work or is it some scam?

•not an ad lol, just sharing what worked for me after wasting hours on hold. i was skeptical too but it literally just helps you navigate the IRS phone tree and get in line for a callback. it was the only way i could talk to an actual human at the IRS after trying for weeks

•I can confirm it works too. Used it last year when my return was stuck for 3 months. The IRS rep told me there was a form missing that I was never notified about. Fixed it that day and got my refund 2 weeks later. Sometimes you just need to talk to a human.

•Interesting, may have to try this. I've been calling every day for a week and keep getting the "due to high call volume" message and disconnected. Driving me insane 🤬

I filed Feb 13th and just got my federal back 3 days ago. State came weeks ago. Sometimes the feds just take longer, especially if you claimed certain credits or deductions. The EIC and Child Tax Credit usually trigger a longer review process. What credits did you claim?

Have u checked ur transcript? That will tell u more than the wheres my refund tool. Google IRS transcript and make an account if u don't already have one. U can c if they adjusted ur refund amount or if there's any issues. The cycle code will tell u what day of the week updates happen for ur return. If u search this forum for "transcript codes" theres guides that explain what all the weird numbers and codes mean or u can use a tool like taxr.ai to explain it all for u

•I did try to check my transcript but I couldn't understand anything on it. There are so many codes and dates. I see something that says 570 and another that says 971 but no idea what that means. I'll check out that tool, thanks!

•570 is a freeze code - they paused processing for some reason. 971 usually means they sent you a notice. Check your mail carefully the next few days! U might need to respond to something to get your refund moving again.

the irs is a joke this year 🤡 i filed january 29th and just got my refund last week. meanwhile my coworker filed in march and got hers in 10 days. makes no sense at all. im convinced they just throw darts at a board to decide whose return to process next lol

•RIGHT?!?! it feels so random. My sister and I filed on the SAME DAY with the SAME tax preparer and she got her refund 2 weeks before me. Both of us had simple returns with W-2 income only. The system is broken af

•exactly! there's zero logic to it. I swear they do it on purpose just to mess with us 😂

•The system actually isn't random - certain factors trigger reviews and different processing paths. Things like having a prior year return still processing, identity protection PINs, certain credits claimed, or even simple math errors can route your return differently. But the IRS doesn't explain this well at all, so it SEEMS random.

Anyone else think it's insane we have to become amateur detectives just to figure out where our own money is??? The IRS has billions in funding and can't make a decent tracking system or hire enough people to answer phones. Still processing" is the most useless status update ever invented 😤

•big facts. and heaven forbid YOU make a mistake on your taxes - they'll hit you with penalties and interest immediately. but when THEY take 3 months to process a simple return... crickets. no accountability at all.

•My favorite is when they say "don't call us if it's been less than 21 days" and then when it's been MORE than 21 days they're like "due to high call volume we cannot take your call" 💀

Is this your first time filing? Or did you change something major on your return compared to previous years? Sometimes that can trigger additional review. Also did you file with a tax preparer or DIY software?

•I've filed for years but this is my first time using TurboTax instead of going to a tax preparer. And I did claim the home office deduction for the first time because I started working remotely. Maybe that's what's causing the delay?
0 coins
Donna Cline
•Bingo! The home office deduction often triggers additional scrutiny, especially first time claiming it. That's almost certainly why you're delayed. As long as you have proper documentation to back it up if audited, you should be fine - just expect a longer wait.

Another day another post about IRS delays... welcome to the club, friend 🫠The good news is most of us DO eventually get our refunds, it's just a matter of when. I went through this last year and was about to lose my mind checking WMR every day. The best advice I can give is try to forget about it for a while if you can. The refund will come when it comes.

•This is actually good advice. I drove myself crazy checking daily last year. This year I just set up direct deposit notifications on my bank account and stopped looking at the IRS site. Much better for my mental health!

Look at your account transcript not your return trancript. Account transcript shows if they adjusted your refund amount or placed any holds on your account. Many people are seeing code 570 (hold) followed by 971 (notice issued) followed by 571 (hold released) and then 846 (refund issued). Whats ur cycle code? If it ends in 05, u get updated on thursdays/fridays.

Maya Diaz
•Just checked and I do have 570 and 971 on the same date (4/05/2025). No 571 or 846 yet though. My cycle code is 20251405 - does that mean Thursdays?
0 coins
Dylan Fisher
•Yep 05 means update on Thursday night/Friday morning. The 570/971 combo usually means they adjusted something or need verification. Watch for a letter within 2 weeks explaining what they need. If you don't get a letter, definitely call. Once they resolve it, you'll see 571 and then 846.

Are you claiming Earned Income Tax Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit? Those automatically get delayed until late February no matter when you file, so they take longer to process overall.

I actually had the exact same issue and after weeks of stress I used taxr.ai to figure out what was happening. turns out there was a simple discrepancy between what my employer reported and what I entered (off by $50 somehow). the tool showed me exactly what was happening and even what the fix would be. got my refund like 10 days later. seriously check it out if you're stuck in limbo like i was https://taxr.ai

•There is a fee, but honestly compared to the stress of not knowing what was happening with my $3k refund, it was totally worth it. They analyze everything in your transcript and tell you exactly what's going on and what to expect next.

•I just used it and it literally explained in 5 minutes what I couldn't figure out after HOURS of googling IRS codes. Apparently my return is on the 60-day review track but should be released next week! So much better than the useless IRS status page.

Call them!! Seriously, I was in the same boat, filed 2/17, got state quick but fed was stuck on processing forever. Finally called using claimyr.com (after trying the regular number for days) and found out they needed to verify my identity. No letter was ever sent to me about this! After I verified over the phone, got my refund 9 days later. Sometimes you just gotta talk to a human.

This happened to me - the IRS found a "math error" on my return. They never sent a notice, but when I finally got through on the phone they told me what happened. They had adjusted my refund down by $42 and the system was just waiting for the correction to process. If I hadn't called, I would've waited another month probably. ALWAYS CALL if it's been more than 21 days.
