Filed March 10th but IRS transcript shows 'No Return Filed' - when should I expect processing?

I submitted my federal tax return on March 10th. It's now almost May and I checked my transcript online and it's saying "No Return Filed". My return was accepted right after I e-filed through TurboTax and I got the confirmation email. Is this normal? How long does it usually take for the IRS to process returns this year? Anyone know when I should expect to see movement on my transcript or get my refund? I was really counting on that money coming in by now.

The IRS is currently experiencing significant processing delays due to staffing shortages and a backlog from previous tax seasons. Even though your return was accepted by the e-file system, that only means the transmission was successful - not that processing has begun. For 2024 filing season (2023 tax year returns), many taxpayers are seeing 6-10 week waits before their transcripts update. The "No Return Filed" status is common during this waiting period. I would suggest: • Wait at least 8 weeks from your March 10 filing date before contacting the IRS • Check "Where's My Refund" on the IRS website rather than just your transcript • Verify that your return wasn't rejected (check your email and TurboTax account) • If you still see no movement by mid-June, then consider calling the IRS Unfortunately many taxpayers are in the same situation this year. The processing time is much longer than the typical 21 days the IRS advertises.

Thank you for the detailed response, really appreciate it. Ill check wheres my refund and see if theres any movement there.

This is true for a lot of ppl. I filed February 15 and just got my refund last week. Patience is key with the IRS these days 🙄

I'm gonna piggyback on this. I was in the same situation but mine was taking even longer. I ended up talking to a tax professional who recommended a tool called taxr.ai - it helped me understand exactly what was happening with my return when I couldn't figure it out.

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

0 coins

it's amazing - way more than just reading. It analyses everything, explains all the codes and dates in normal human language, and even predicts when you'll get your refund based on actual data. Honestly saved me hours of googling and stress. 100% recommend https://taxr.ai

Just tried it and OMG this thing is incredible!! It actually made sense of all those random codes and explained exactly what's happening with my return. Why doesn't everyone know about this?? Thank you so much for recommending!!

I spent days trying to make sense of my transcript and the weird "No Return Filed" message even though I submitted mine back in January. Ended up finding this service called taxr.ai that was an absolute game changer. It analyzed my transcript and explained everything that was happening behind the scenes at the IRS in plain English. It even told me when I could expect my refund based on current IRS processing patterns. Way better than just guessing or trying to interpret all those cryptic codes myself. You should definitely check it out - https://taxr.ai - it saved me so much frustration!

Is this legit? Sounds too good to be true. How does it know more than the IRS website itself?

0 coins

Totally understand the skepticism - I felt the same way. It basically takes all the data from your transcript and runs it through their system that knows all the IRS codes and processing patterns. The IRS website just shows basic status, but doesn't explain what's actually happening or what the codes mean. This tool actually explained why my return was delayed and predicted when I'd get my money. Ended up being spot on!

does it need all your personal info? not sure i want to hand over my SSN to a random website...

You just upload a transcript you already downloaded from the IRS yourself. Super straightforward and it gives instant answers instead of waiting on hold for hours.

After waiting for 2 months with the same "No Return Filed" message, I was ready to lose my mind. Finally got through to an actual human at the IRS thanks to a service called Claimyr. I went to claimyr.com, they navigated the phone system for me and got me a callback from an IRS agent who explained my return was stuck in review. Honestly the best money I've spent all year to get some actual answers instead of staring at an unchanged transcript for weeks. They got an agent on the phone with me in hours instead of days of calling.

ive been trying to call the IRS for WEEKS and never get through. how much did it cost? worth it?

0 coins

It was so worth it - the peace of mind alone knowing what was actually happening with my return instead of being in limbo. The IRS agent was able to tell me exactly why it was delayed and what I needed to do. Compared to taking days off work to sit on hold for hours, it was a no-brainer.

0 coins

Did the agent actually help resolve your issue or just tell you what was wrong?

0 coins

Both! They explained why my return was stuck (missing form) and processed it while I was on the phone. Got my direct deposit a week later. Without that call I mightve been waiting for months.

The "no return filed" status is normal for a few weeks after filing. Dont panic yet. But honestly the IRS is a mess this year, friend of mine filed in january and just got her refund last week.

0 coins

Ugh that's frustrating. Really need the money sooner than that

0 coins

yeah it sucks. Shes saying she had to call them multiple times before anything happened. The squeaky wheel gets the grease i guess

check wheres my refund tool on the irs website. sometimes transcript doesnt update but wmr will show progress

0 coins

Just went through this exact thing. Filed March 2nd, transcript showed nothing until yesterday. Now it shows processing with an 846 code which means my refund is coming next week. Hang in there! It might update suddenly all at once.

0 coins

What does the 846 code mean exactly? My transcript updated today with a bunch of different codes and I'm confused AF 🤔

0 coins

846 is the refund issued code, its what you want to see! it means money is on the way. The date next to it is when theyll send the direct deposit or mail the check.

0 coins

Sweet! Just checked and I also have an 846 code. Thanks!

The irs is completely overwhelmed right now. I had the same situation and waited 14 WEEKS before my transcript updated. Its rediculous. They're still catching up from COVID backlog plus they had budget cuts. if u need ur money fast, ur out of luck unfortunately.

You need to double check if your return was actually accepted or just SENT. Turbo tax sends a confirmation when they transmit it, but you should get a second email when the IRS actually accepts it. If you didn't get that second email, your return might have been rejected and you wouldn't know unless you check your TurboTax account.

0 coins

Just checked and I did get the second email saying the IRS accepted my return. So I guess it's just slow processing?

0 coins

Yeah then ur just stuck in the processing black hole with the rest of us 😩 So frustrating!

0 coins

did you claim the earned income credit or additional child tax credit? Those returns usually take longer to process because the IRS verifies eligibility more carefully.

0 coins

No, my return was pretty simple. Just W-2 income and standard deduction. No credits or anything special.

0 coins

Weird then, should be faster. But nothing about the IRS makes sense anymore lol. Id just keep monitoring and wait a few more weeks.

0 coins

I just want to vent about how broken the IRS is. I filed on feb 1 and still havent even gotten any update. called them twice and spent HOURS on hold just to be told "keep waiting" both times. this country is such a joke omg

0 coins

How did you even get through on the phone? I've been calling for days and can't get past the automated system 🤬

0 coins

I used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me a callback from the IRS. Only way I could talk to someone without wasting my entire day.

0 coins

Just used Claimyr and had an IRS agent call me back within 2 hours. They told me exactly what was happening with my return. Worth every penny not to waste hours on hold!

0 coins

have u checked the status using the irs2go app? sometimes it updates there first before the transcript shows anything

0 coins

If you filed through TurboTax double check they actually SUBMITTED your return. I thought mine was filed in Feb but turns out there was an issue and TurboTax never sent it!! Had to resubmit in April 🤦‍♀️

0 coins

Oh no! That's scary. Just checked my TurboTax account again and it does show submitted and accepted by the IRS on March 10th.

0 coins

This year is especially bad because the IRS implemented new security measures that are slowing down processing. Plus they're still dealing with staffing shortages. I'm a tax preparer and most of my clients who filed in March are still waiting. Expect at least 8-10 weeks total.

0 coins

I couldn't make sense of my transcript or why it showed no return filed for weeks. I was going crazy trying to understand all the codes and dates. Finally used taxr.ai and it explained everything - turns out my return was actually being processed but just not showing up correctly in the transcript yet. Saved me from calling the IRS and waiting on hold for hours. https://taxr.ai

what exactly does this service do that i cant just google? seems weird to use some random website for this

0 coins

It's not just generic info you find on Google - it actually reads YOUR specific transcript, explains what each code means for YOUR situation, and gives personalized timeline predictions. Google just gives general explanations but taxr showed me exactly what was happening with MY return specifically and why it wasn't showing up yet.

0 coins

So I just tried taxr and WOW - it actually pinpointed exactly what was happening with my return and when I'll likely get my refund. This is brilliant and saved me hours of research and stress!

0 coins

Did you owe any money last year or have a payment plan with the IRS? Sometimes that can delay processing of your new return.

0 coins

Nope, got a refund last year too and filed early. Never had any issues before.

0 coins

sometimes the wmr tool and transcript don't match up. have you tried BOTH? one might show progress while the other still says nothing.

0 coins

I just checked and WMR also just says "still processing" with no bar or anything. Just the circle for received.

0 coins

Check your TurboTax account specifically under the Tax Home section and then e-file status. Sometimes the return can be rejected without them sending a clear notification.

0 coins

Do you have access to your Account Transcript or just your Return Transcript? The Account Transcript will show if they've received your return even when the Return Transcript says "no return filed".

0 coins

I can access the account transcript too. It shows my old info from last year but nothing for 2023 tax year.

0 coins

Dealing with the IRS seriously makes me want to pull my hair out. I spent so much time trying to decipher my transcript and figure out why it said no return filed when I definitely submitted months ago. I finally broke down and used this thing called taxr.ai and it was a game changer - explained everything in plain english and gave me a timeline. Beats staring at transcript codes trying to play detective lol
