File injured spouse next time...problem solved š¤·āāļø
Not always that simple. Injured spouse can actually complicate things and delay processing by 11-14 weeks. Sometimes faster to just take the offset depending on your financial situation.
When I needed to talk to a human at the IRS about my offset, I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got through in about 45 minutes. The IRS rep confirmed exactly what was happening with my refund and gave me the exact date my remaining portion would be deposited. Worth every penny after spending DAYS trying to get through the normal phone line. They had me talking to an actual IRS agent who could see my account and help resolve everything.
Anybody else think its nuts that we can land a rover on Mars but the IRS cant tell us when our refund will arrive? 𤣠good luck OP, you're gonna need it
The IRS is still using computer systems from the 1960s. I wish I was joking. My cousin works there and says some of their code is older than most of their employees š
My timeline this year after verification: Day 0: Verified ID online and by phone Day 3: WMR changed to "received and processing" Day 14: No change Day 15: WMR changed to approved with DDD Day 19: Money in my account Hope this helps!
The IRS is stuck in 1982 I swear. They're sending physical letters for verification when they could just text or email. It's ridiculous! I feel your pain.
has anyone tried just showing up at the IRS office with all your documents? like license, ssn card, birth certificate, etc and DEMAND they verify you? i'm wondering if the squeaky wheel approach works
omg what happened???
Let's just say I tried the "I'm not leaving until someone helps me" approach last year and ended up having a nice chat with a federal security officer. 0/10 would not recommend.
Did you have any credits like EITC or Additional Child Tax Credit? Those automatically get extra scrutiny and delay processing.
Yes I claimed EITC. But I do every year and never had problems before
am i the only one that thinks its INSANE we just have to sit and wait for our OWN MONEY with no real updates or communication? like this is our money they're holding not theirs! the irs needs to be completely rebuilt from the ground up
facts. and they'll charge us penalties and interest if we're late but they can take half a year to process a return with zero consequences

If you used TurboTax or another tax program, double check what you entered for the advance CTC payments. A lot of people enter $0 thinking they're answering "did you get advances" with "no" but the system interprets that as "yes I got advances totaling $0" which causes the exact problem you're describing.

ā¢We used FreeTaxUSA and I'm pretty sure I entered the correct amounts but now I'm second-guessing myself. Is there any way to see what I actually submitted on the return?

ā¢You should be able to login to your FreeTaxUSA account and view/download a PDF of your submitted return. Check Schedule 8812 specifically.

I'm a tax preparer and I've seen this issue multiple times this year. The IRS's record-keeping for the advance CTC payments has been a DISASTER. Most of the time it's because they recorded sending payments that never actually made it to the taxpayer. Request your 2023 Account Transcript ASAP and look for codes 766 with "credit reference number 1401" - these are the advance CTC payments they think they sent you.

ā¢Thank you! This is exactly what I needed to know. Will check for those specific codes tonight.

ā¢In addition to what they said, you should use taxr.ai - it will automatically find and explain all these codes for you and tell you exactly what steps to take. Saved me so much time trying to figure out all the IRS jargon.
