Filed February 3rd, Still Showing "Action Required" on WMR After In-Person Identity Verification - Transcript Remains Empty After a Month

I filed my taxes on Feb 3rd 2024 and got accepted same day. On March 5th I had to go in person for identity verification at my local IRS office. It's been almost a month since verification and my transcript is still completely blank, no updates at all. When I check Where's My Refund on the IRS website (sa.www4.irs.gov), it shows an "Action Required" message that says: "Please read the following information related to your tax situation. You may need to provide additional information to receive your full refund. We received your tax return and are reviewing it. If we need additional information, we'll mail a notice with further instructions. If you've already received a notice, please follow the instructions. If we determine no additional information is needed, we'll continue to process your refund." Under "Your personal tax information" it shows: Tax Year: 2024 Filing Status: Head of household I verified my identity in person nearly a month ago, but I'm still not seeing any updates on my transcript. It's completely blank with no information at all. I don't know if I'm supposed to receive something in the mail or if I should be more proactive. Has anyone dealt with this "Action Required" status that just says they're reviewing your return? I'm not sure if I should keep waiting or if there's something else I need to do at this point. I haven't received any notices in the mail requesting additional information yet.

The "Action Required" message is actually somewhat common after identity verification and doesn't always mean you need to do anything. Your return is likely in the verification queue. The empty transcript is normal during this phase - the IRS hasn't processed your return yet since they put everything on hold during verification. Typically after in-person verification, it takes 9-12 weeks for processing to complete. I know that seems like forever, but that's unfortunately their timeline. If you don't receive any notices in the mail requesting additional information, you just need to wait. The WMR tool often shows that generic message during this waiting period. One important thing to check - did the IRS employee who verified your identity provide you with any documentation or confirmation number? If so, keep that safe. If you don't see any updates after the 9 week mark, you might need to call the IRS to check on status, but I wouldn't worry just yet.

Thank you for the detailed response. The IRS person who verified me didn't give me any documentation, just told me I was good to go. Guess I'll just have to wait then. So frustrating

this happened to me last year, exact same situation. took almost 10 weeks after verification before anything showed up on my transcript! hang in there 👍

Wait 9-12 WEEKS after verification?? That's insane. The IRS is such a joke omg 🤮

I was in a similar situation and was completely lost trying to figure out what was happening with my refund. I tried checking WMR, calling the IRS (impossible), and reading articles online. Nothing helped until I found taxr.ai - it's an AI tool that reads your transcript and explains exactly what's happening with your return. It told me my return was in manual review and gave me the exact timeline to expect. Seriously a gamechanger instead of guessing what all the weird codes mean or why your transcript is empty. https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

0 coins

It does WAY more than just read the transcript. It explains every code in plain english, tells you when to expect updates, identifies issues holding up your refund, and even tells you what options you have. Best part is it works even when your transcript is empty like OP's situation - it can tell you why it's empty and what stage of processing you're in. Honestly wish I found it months ago instead of stressing myself out!

does it cost money? sounds too good to be true tbh

0 coins

Yes it costs money but seriously worth every penny. I spent HOURS trying to decipher my transcript and got nowhere. This tool gave me answers in 2 minutes that I couldn't figure out after weeks of research. It's insanely good!

After my ID verification last year, I was stuck in limbo for over a month with no transcript updates. I finally found this app called Claimyr that got me through to an actual IRS agent who could see what was happening with my return. Got connected in like 20 minutes when I'd been trying for weeks to reach someone. claimyr.com - talking to a real person got my refund processed within days after that phone call. Best money I ever spent considering how much of my refund was being held up.

Does this actually work? I've been trying to call the IRS for 2 weeks and can't get through

0 coins

Yes 100% works. I was super skeptical too but was desperate. They basically wait on hold for you and then call you when they have an agent on the line. The agent helped me figure out my return was stuck because of a stupid clerical error. Would've waited months more without that call.

Ngl I thought this was gonna be another scam but I tried it this morning and had an IRS agent on the phone by lunchtime. They cleared up my issue right away. 10/10 would recommend

0 coins

haha yea right. nothing can get you through to the IRS 🙄 their phone system is designed to keep you out

0 coins

That's literally why this service exists. They know all the tricks to navigate the phone tree and get through. I was shocked when they actually called me back with an agent on the line. Like I said, I was skeptical too until I tried it.

how much is it? worth it if ur waiting on a big refund I guess

0 coins

Same situation but I filed Jan 15. In person verification Feb 9. Transcript still blank, WMR shows 'still processing.' Called IRS last week and they said its 'in processing' but couldn't give me additional info. Just wait is all I hear.

0 coins

That's so frustrating, especially since you filed before me! Did they at least tell you how much longer you might have to wait?

0 coins

Nope, just the standard "9 weeks from verification date" line. I'm at 8 weeks now so hopefully something changes soon. I'll update if I see any movement.

Former TAS (Taxpayer Advocate Service) employee here. What you're experiencing is completely normal for post-verification returns. The "Action Required" message is misleading - it's a generic status that doesn't mean you personally need to take action. After verification, your return gets placed back in the processing queue, but often at a lower priority than new returns. Blank transcript means they haven't formally started processing yet. Timing for post-verification processing: - Electronic returns: 4-9 weeks - Paper returns: 6-12 weeks - Returns with certain credits (EITC/CTC): Add 2-3 weeks If you reach week 9 with no movement, then call the IRS (1-800-829-1040) and request a processing trace. Ask specifically to check if your ID verification was properly recorded in the system.

I'm in the same boat but already at 13 weeks 😭 tried calling but cant get thru. any tips for actually reaching a human at the IRS?

Call early morning (7am EST) or try the Spanish line then ask for English. Or honestly, at 13 weeks you qualify for TAS assistance. Call 1-877-777-4778 for Taxpayer Advocate Service help.

thank you!! will try those options tomorrow!

did you use a tax prep service or file yourself? sometimes those places make mistakes that hold things up. check back on your return for accuracy

My transcript was empty for FOUR MONTHS last year after ID verify. No rhyme or reason. Then one day it magically updated and I got my refund the next week. The IRS is completely broken. Just prepare to wait with zero communication.

0 coins

This is so true. The system is a mess. And they wonder why people hate them 🤣

0 coins

4 months?? 😱 I can't wait that long, I need this money

0 coins

Yeah it was brutal. I had to take out a loan to cover some bills while waiting. Never again.

0 coins

Check ur mail REALLY carefully. They might have sent a letter that u missed. I had this exact problem and turns out they sent a letter requesting more info but it looked like junk mail so I almost threw it away.

WMR is notoriously unreliable. I wouldn't trust anything it says at this point. After ID verification, your best bet is just to wait. I went through this last year, and my transcript stayed empty for about 7 weeks after verification, then suddenly updated with all the info at once. The system is stupid.

0 coins

Yeah I'm starting to realize WMR is basically useless. Did you end up getting your refund after those 7 weeks?

0 coins

Yep, once the transcript updated it was only about 8 days until the direct deposit hit my account. It was like everything processed at once.

0 coins

Have u considered calling the Tax Advocate Service? If u have a financial hardship, theyll try to expedite. Worth a shot.

0 coins

This happened to me too! I used taxr.ai to figure out what was actually happening - turns out my verification wasn't properly recorded in their system even though I did it in person. The tool could tell by analyzing patterns in my account that I needed to call and specifically mention that my ID verification wasn't properly linked to my return. Saved me like 8 more weeks of waiting! https://taxr.ai

I had this EXACT situation and was going crazy trying to figure out the problem. Ended up using claimyr.com to get an IRS agent on the phone. Turns out there was a mismatch between my W2 and what my employer reported - something I never would have known without talking to someone. They fixed it on the phone and I had my refund 2 weeks later. Calling was the only thing that worked after weeks of stress.

Pro tip: if u filed head of household, they might be verifying ur eligibility. Make sure u meet all qualifications. I got audited 2 yrs ago for this exact reason

0 coins

I definitely qualify - single parent with my kid living with me full time. Haven't had issues in previous years filing the same way.

0 coins

That's good. Sometimes they do random checks tho even if everythings correct. System sucks.

0 coins

The IRS is SO behind this year its not even funny. My sister filed in January and is still waiting. My cousin filed in march and already got her refund. Makes zero sense. Complete clown show 🤡

0 coins

This is literally why I always wait until April to file. The early filers are basically beta testers for their broken systems 💅

0 coins

lmao tru, but I always need my money asap so I risk it 😭

0 coins

Did you have any credits like EITC or Additional Child Tax Credit? Those automatically get extra scrutiny and delay processing.

0 coins

Yes I claimed EITC. But I do every year and never had problems before

0 coins

That explains it. They're being extra strict with EITC this year because of all the fraud last year. Expect a longer wait than normal unfortunately.

0 coins

am i the only one that thinks its INSANE we just have to sit and wait for our OWN MONEY with no real updates or communication? like this is our money they're holding not theirs! the irs needs to be completely rebuilt from the ground up

💯💯💯

facts. and they'll charge us penalties and interest if we're late but they can take half a year to process a return with zero consequences
