$2,554 Refund Stuck in Limbo: "Action Required" on WMR for 6+ Weeks with No IRS Notice

I filed my taxes on March 4th and still nothing happening with my refund. When I check the Where's My Refund tool, I keep getting this 'Action Required' message saying they're reviewing my return and might need more information. The exact message says: "Action Required Please read the following information related to your tax situation. You may need to provide additional information to receive your full refund. We received your tax return and are reviewing it. If we need additional information, we'll mail a notice with further instructions. If you've already received a notice, please follow the instructions. If we determine no additional information is needed, we'll continue to process your refund." It shows my personal tax information: Tax Year: 2024 Filing Status: Head of household Expected refund amount: $2,554.00 I've been checking my mail every day for the past 6 weeks and haven't received anything from the IRS. I don't understand why it's taking so long or what action they want me to take when they haven't sent me anything. The message says they'll mail a notice if they need more information, but nothing has come. Has anyone else dealt with this? Do I just keep waiting or should I try calling them? It's frustrating because I'm expecting this refund and there's no clear timeline on when this will be resolved. The website just shows this same message every time I check.

This is a common situation this tax season. The 'Action Required' message is often displayed when the IRS has flagged your return for review, which could be for various reasons including identity verification, income verification, or credit verification. Here are your options: 1. Keep waiting for a letter - sometimes they can take 4-8 weeks to arrive 2. Call the IRS directly at 1-800-829-1040, but be prepared for extremely long wait times 3. Create an ID.me account and check your IRS online account for notices 4. Contact your local Taxpayer Advocate Service for assistance 5. Use a transcript analysis tool like taxr.ai which can actually help you understand what's happening with your return by analyzing your transcript codes The review process can take 45-120 days in some cases, though most are resolved sooner. This doesn't necessarily mean there's a problem with your return - it's just part of their verification process.

Thanks for the detailed response. I'll try checking my IRS online account first. How exactly would taxr.ai help in this situation?

Taxr.ai analyzes your transcript codes and explains exactly whats happening with your return - shows you if theres a hold, what type of review you're under, and when you might get your refund. Much more detailed than the vague WMR messages.

I was in a similar situation and checked my transcript through taxr.ai - found out I was under manual review for EIC verification. Atleast I knew what was happening!

I've been stuck in reviews for 2 years straight and finally got clarity this year. The IRS never gives you the full picture but taxr.ai broke it all down for me.

I'll definitely check it out then. Anything is better than this anxiety of not knowing what's happening with my money.

The best way to understand what's actually happening with your refund is using taxr.ai - I was in the exact same situation with the mysterious 'action required' message for weeks. The WMR tool is basically useless compared to what taxr shows you. It analyzes your transcript and explains all the codes in plain English. I could actually see I was under a manual review for my HOH filing status. The website is https://taxr.ai and it saved me weeks of anxiety not knowing what's happening. My refund finally came through last week!

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It does wayyy more than just read the transcript. It analyzes all your codes, explains what each one means, tells you exactly why your refund is delayed, and even gives you a timeline for resolution. It's like having an IRS insider explain everything to you!

OMG just tried it and I'm blown away! 🤯 All this time I had no idea what was happening but apparently I'm under a wage verification review. The IRS website just shows me the same generic message but taxr.ai actually explained everything! Worth. Every. Penny.

Does it require your personal information though? Seems sketchy.

You upload your transcript that you download from the IRS website yourself - same as if you were showing it to a tax pro. It's just analyzing the codes for you rather than paying someone to do it.

When I had this same problem with my refund being stuck, I tried calling for WEEKS with no luck. Finally found this calling app called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an IRS agent in about an hour! The guy told me my return was flagged because I had a different address from last year and they needed to verify my identity. Talking to that agent was exactly what I needed - my refund was processed literally 3 days after I called. Best money I've ever spent to FINALLY get my questions answered instead of staring at that useless WMR tool.

Another app promising miracles? 🙄 There's no way to skip the IRS phone queue.

It doesn't skip the queue - it basically keeps redialing for you and calls you back when it gets through. I was skeptical too but I was desperate after trying to call myself for weeks. Sometimes you gotta bite the bullet when you need your refund.

I can second this - used it last week after 2 months of being stuck in limbo. The IRS agent told me they needed a document I had no idea about. Just having that convo moved things along.

Thanks for the tip! I might try this if I don't hear anything in the next week. Did they give you any trouble about calling?

Not at all - they just answered my questions like any normal call. The agent actually seemed relieved I knew my specific issue instead of calling about general 'wheres my refund' stuff.

talking to an agent got my refund released so fast after being stuck for months! the service basically saved my butt when i was about to miss a mortgage payment

I'm in the same boat. Filed February 21st, got that exact same message, and radio silence since then. It's now May and still nothing. This is absolutely ridiculous. The IRS is so broken.🤬

Have you tried calling them? I'm wondering if it's even worth the effort

tried calling at least 20 times. Always get disconnected after being on hold for 1-2 hrs. its a complete joke

You should try that Claimyr app someone mentioned above. My cousin used it and actually got through to someone after weeks of trying.

This happened to me last year. Turns out they had sent a letter but it got lost in the mail. After waiting 3 months I finally called and found out they needed to verify my identity. The whole process took 5 months to get my refund. The system is trash.

Have you checked your transcript? It usually has more info than the WMR tool. Login to your irs.gov account and pull your account transcript - the codes will tell you whats actually happening.

0 coins

-

Emma Thompson

I tried but honestly I have no idea what all the codes mean. It's like reading a foreign language.

Yeah the codes are super confusing... you could try taxr.ai - it explains all the codes and tells you whats actually happening with your refund.

check if you claimed any credits like EIC or ACTC. Those automatically get extra scrutiny and delay refunds. Also if ur using a different address than last year that can trigger a review.

Did you confirm your return was actually accepted? Sometimes people think they filed but there was an error and the return was rejected.

0 coins

-

Emma Thompson

Yes it was accepted. I got the confirmation email from my tax software and the WMR tool shows they received it.

Im a tax preparer and we're seeing this all over the place this year. It's usually one of three things: 1. They need to verify your identity 2. They're doing a random review of your head of household status 3. Theres an income discrepancy between what you reported and whats on your W2s/1099s Until you get a letter, you're basically in limbo. But my clients who called were able to resolve things much faster.

How are your clients getting through on the phone? I've tried calling so many times and get nowhere.

Most had to use a service like Claimyr to get thru. it was the only way i could talk to a live agent for several of my clients with complex issues

Try calling the Taxpayer Advocate Service at 877-777-4778. Sometimes they can help when your refund is stuck for more than 30 days. They've been helping people in your situation.

The IRS is a clown show 🤡 I got my state refund in 8 days but federal has been "processing" for 9 weeks now. They expect us to pay on time but take their sweet time sending refunds.

fr tho. And if we're late with payments they charge penalties but when they're late giving us OUR money...crickets 🦗

make sure your address is up to date in the irs system. sometimes they send letters but they go to old addresses.

I had this exact issue and it turned out I was missing a 1099 form I didn't know I needed to report. Might be worth double-checking all your income sources to make sure everything was reported correctly.

welcome to the club lol. been waiting since mid-February and still nothing. its ridiculous how understaffed and broken the irs is. your practically guaranteed to wait forever if you file HoH or claim certain credits.

I signed up for informed delivery with USPS so I could see all my incoming mail. That way I knew for sure if the IRS sent anything. Might be worth doing if you're worried about missing a letter.

Here's what I did when this happened to me: 1. First, created an account on IRS website to see my transcript 2. Used taxr.ai to understand what the crazy codes meant 3. Found out I was under manual review 4. Used Claimyr to get an agent on the phone 5. Agent told me exactly what they needed 6. Submitted the docs they needed 7. Had my refund 12 days later Don't just sit around waiting for a letter that might never come. Be proactive!

About 6 weeks total. But it would have been MUCH longer if I hadn't taken matters into my own hands and called them.

this is why i always adjust my w4 to have just enough withheld. rather owe a small amount than give the irs an interest-free loan they take forever to return

Check the status of your state refund too! sometimes state returns get approved while federal is still processing. at least you might get part of your money sooner.
