TurboTax showing IRS "Action Required" alert for 2024 refund - but says to wait for mail notice?

So I filed my taxes through TurboTax like 3 weeks ago and I've been checking the refund status constantly. Today I logged in and saw this weird message saying 'Action Required' with no actual action for me to take? I'm getting really confused and frustrated about this. When I check the "Refund Status Results" page in TurboTax, there's an exclamation mark with "Action Required" and then it says "Please read the following information related to your tax situation. You may need to provide additional information to receive your full refund." The message specifically states: "We received your tax return and are reviewing it. If we need additional information, we'll mail a notice with further instructions. If you've already received a notice, please follow the instructions. If we determine no additional information is needed, we'll continue to process your refund." Under "Your personal tax information" it shows: Tax Year: 2024 Filing Status: Head of household The website URL at the bottom shows "@sa.www4.irs.gov" so I'm assuming this is coming from the IRS through TurboTax. Has anyone else seen this message before? Is there something I'm supposed to do or just wait? This is frustrating since I was counting on that refund money. Should I call the IRS or just wait for this supposed "notice" that might come in the mail? I don't understand why they'd put "Action Required" if they're not actually telling me what action to take!

This is a standard message that appears when the IRS has pulled your return for review. It doesn't necessarily mean there's a problem, but they're taking a closer look at something on your return. The key part of that message is "If we need additional information, we'll mail a notice" - meaning you don't need to do anything until/unless you receive mail from the IRS. These reviews can take 45-120 days depending on what they're looking at. You can also check your transcript on the IRS website (not through TurboTax) to see if there are any specific codes that might give you more information about the review. Look for codes like 570 (additional account action pending) or 971 (notice issued). Head of Household status does tend to get more scrutiny, so that could be what they're reviewing.

Thanks for the explanation. How do I check my transcript? Never done that before.

0 coins

Go to IRS.gov, create an account (or login if you already have one), and then look for "Get Transcript" option. You'll be able to see all your tax records including any recent activity on your current return.

0 coins

I tried but it's asking for a loan account number which I don't have. Is there another way?

0 coins

If you can't verify online, you can request a transcript by mail or call the IRS, but good luck getting through lol

Those transcript codes are like a foreign language to me. I recommend using taxr.ai to interpret them - it saved me so much headache last year when I was in this exact situation!

0 coins

will they atleast give me some of my refund? or hold all of it until the review is done?

0 coins

Unfortunately they typically hold the entire refund until the review is complete. If they're specifically questioning one credit (like EIC) sometimes they'll release the rest, but that's not common.

I had the same issue last year and spent weeks trying to figure out what was happening. Ended up using taxr.ai which was a total game changer. Instead of staring at confusing codes and messages, it read my transcript and explained exactly what was going on with my return and what I needed to do next. Saved me from endless researching and anxiety about my refund status. You can check it out here: https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

0 coins

It reads your transcript AND explains everything in plain english! It tells you what each code means, when you'll likely get your refund, if there are issues, and what to do about them. WAY better than trying to piece it together yourself. I'm telling everyone I know about it now because the IRS is just impossible to understand otherwise!

another service to pay for? the government should just make this stuff clearer 🙄

0 coins

I totally agree the system should be clearer! But until then, tools like this are lifesavers. I spent weeks stressing before I found it - would have paid double what they charge just for the peace of mind.

After getting that same message and waiting for weeks, I finally got through to an IRS agent using Claimyr.com. They scheduled a callback and I got to talk to a real person who explained exactly what was happening with my return. Turns out they just needed to verify my income from a side job but never sent the letter! The agent fixed it on the spot and my refund was released a week later. Honestly the best money I've spent all year just to get answers instead of stressing.

0 coins

this sounds like a scam. why would you need to pay to talk to the IRS?

0 coins

not a scam at all! the IRS phone lines are impossible to get through - I tried for 2 weeks straight and kept getting disconnected. This service just helps you skip the wait time. Talking to an actual agent saved me from waiting another 2 months for my refund.

0 coins

did you have to give them any personal info? seems sketchy

0 coins

They don't ask for ANY personal info! They just connect you to the IRS line and hold your spot. When an agent is available, they call you and connect you. You talk directly to the IRS, not them.

I used this too after seeing it mentioned here! Got my $4800 refund released after it was stuck for 3 months. Total lifesaver.

I had this same message for my 2022 return. Waited 4 months with no letter, no updates, nothing. Finally I called IRS (took 3 hours on hold) and they said they needed verification of my dependent but never sent the letter. Such a waste of time! If I ever have issues again im just calling right away instead of waiting for some letter that never comes.

The IRS is so backed up rn it's not even funny. I filed in February and didnt get my refund until JUNE. And I had a super simple return! No letter, no explanation, nothing. Just randomly showed up one day. The whole system is broken.

0 coins

Same. I've been waiting since January. At this point I'm convinced they've forgotten about me completely 💀

0 coins

they're prioritizing auditing poor people instead of processing returns because thats what they're funded to do 🤡

0 coins

If you claimed Earned Income Credit, Child Tax Credit, or Additional Child Tax Credit, your refund is automatically held for review. It's part of the PATH Act to prevent fraud. They have to hold these returns until at least mid-February, and many get additional scrutiny. Did you claim any of these?

0 coins

Yes I claimed Child Tax Credit for my two kids. But I filed in early April so we're well past February.

0 coins

The February date is just the earliest they can release these refunds. Many take much longer especially if there's any discrepancy or if you're a first-time claimer. They're being extra careful with these credits this year.

0 coins

Omg this whole process is sooooo stupid. They tell you action required but don't tell you what action???? Make it make sense.

Check your account transcript on the IRS website - not the TurboTax status. TurboTax just shows generic messages. Your transcript will have actual codes that tell you what's happening. You can create an account at irs.gov and view it there. Look for code 570 (refund hold) or 971 (notice issued).

0 coins

Thank you! I'll try to check there too

Head of household gets flagged for review a lot. They probably want to confirm you meet the requirements. Do you have dependents? Have you filed HOH before? Was there a change in your filing status from previous years? All these can trigger reviews.

0 coins

I've filed HOH for the past 3 years with the same 2 dependents (my kids). Nothing changed this year so that's why I'm confused.

0 coins

Hmm that is weird then. Maybe just random selection - they do that too. Or could be something completely unrelated to your filing status.

0 coins

TurboTax is TERRIBLE at showing accurate status info! Their system doesn't sync properly with IRS. Use the official "Where's My Refund" tool on IRS.gov instead.

0 coins

I totally feel ur pain! I was in limbo for 11 MONTHS with my 2022 return because of that same message. The IRS is completely overwhelmed and understaffed. You have two options: 1) sit and wait, possibly for months or 2) contact the Taxpayer Advocate Service - they can help if you're facing financial hardship because of the delay. Calling the regular IRS line is useless, they'll just tell you to wait.

0 coins

11 months?? Please tell me you're joking. I can't wait that long!

0 coins

Wish I was joking! Not trying to scare you - most people get theirs way sooner. But the IRS is still catching up from pandemic backlogs and they're terrible at communication.

0 coins

Don't 👏 trust 👏 TurboTax 👏 status 👏 updates! They're using a generic message system. Always check the IRS websites directly - both Where's My Refund and your transcript if possible.

0 coins

I've learned my lesson the hard way: NEVER rely on tax refund money until it's actually in your account. The IRS operates on their own mysterious timeline and there's literally nothing we can do to speed it up.

0 coins

^ this is the real advice right here.

0 coins

Yeah I'm realizing that now 😔 Just tough when you're counting on that money.

0 coins

have you checked your mail thoroughly? sometimes those IRS notices look like junk mail and people throw them away without realizing. they're not always in official-looking envelopes.

0 coins

I check all my mail carefully. Haven't received anything from them yet.

0 coins

Friend of mine had this exact situation. Turned out they needed her to verify her identity - something about security flags on her account. But the letter explaining this got lost in the mail. She ended up using taxr.ai to figure it out, and it helped her identify exactly what was going on and what steps to take. Super helpful when you're stuck in IRS limbo: https://taxr.ai

0 coins

Did you use direct deposit? I've noticed people with paper checks tend to get more delays and "action required" messages.

0 coins

Yeah I used direct deposit to the same account I've used for years

0 coins

This happened to me last month! I got through to the IRS using claimyr.com since calling directly was impossible. The agent told me they were just verifying my income from a 1099 job and the system automatically flags these for review even when there's no issue. My refund was released 2 weeks after I spoke with them. Talking to a real person made all the difference.

0 coins

I'm going through the exact same thing right now! Filed in March and got that "Action Required" message last week. It's so frustrating because like you said, there's no actual action to take. I've been checking every day hoping for some kind of update but nothing changes. At least now I know I'm not the only one dealing with this. The waiting is the worst part - especially when you're depending on that money. I'm going to try checking my transcript like others suggested, but honestly this whole system is just poorly designed for regular people to understand.
