"Action Required" Status on IRS Website for 2024 Return - No Notice Received Yet, What Should I Expect?
Just checked Where's My Refund at sa.www4.irs.gov and got an "Action Required" message for my 2024 tax return. I'm looking at the screen right now and it shows: "Action Required Please read the following information related to your tax situation. You may need to provide additional information to receive your full refund. We received your tax return and are reviewing it. If we need additional information, we'll mail a notice with further instructions. If you've already received a notice, please follow the instructions. If we determine no additional information is needed, we'll continue to process your refund." The IRS website clearly shows this is regarding my Tax Year 2024 return. I checked this at 8:30 and I'm kind of worried about what this means for my refund. I haven't gotten any letters in the mail yet. Has anyone else seen this "Action Required" status with these exact instructions? Should I be concerned or just wait for a potential letter? The message doesn't give me any specifics about what might be wrong or how long this review might take. It just says they're "reviewing" my return. I'm anxious because I was counting on getting this refund soon and now I don't know if there's a problem or how long this will delay things.

The "Action Required" message you're seeing at 8:30 on the IRS website is a standard verification status during early tax season. The system shows they've received your 2024 tax return and have placed it under review - this is part of normal processing and verification procedures. The key details in the message are actually reassuring: 1. "We received your tax return" - confirms your return is in their system 2. "If we need additional information, we'll mail a notice" - meaning no action is needed unless you receive physical mail 3. "If we determine no additional information is needed, we'll continue to process" - indicates this could resolve automatically This status often appears when the IRS is running standard verification checks on returns, particularly during the early filing period. Many taxpayers see this message clear up within 2-3 weeks without any action required. The fact that you haven't received any physical notices in the mail yet suggests you likely just need to wait while they complete their standard review. Keep monitoring your tax transcript for updates, but there's no need to take any action unless you receive an official notice in the mail requesting specific information.

Hey everyone, instead of guessing what's happening, you should try taxr.ai - it's this new tool that analyzes your transcript and tells you exactly what's going on and when to expect your refund. Only costs $1 and saved me so much anxiety. Here's the link: https://taxr.ai

Did you claim EIC or CTC? Those usually trigger extra review

•yeah claimed EIC... that explains it

EIC claims definitely trigger additional review periods - it's one of the most common reasons for that "Action Required" status. The IRS has to verify income eligibility and dependent information for earned income credit, which can add 2-4 weeks to processing time. Since you mentioned claiming EIC, this is almost certainly just their standard verification process. The good news is that EIC reviews are routine and usually resolve without any action needed from you. Just keep an eye on your mailbox for the next few weeks, but most EIC reviews clear automatically once they verify your information matches their records.

Same situation here! Filed early and got the "Action Required" message about a week ago. Like others mentioned, I also claimed EIC which probably triggered the review. The waiting is definitely stressful when you're counting on that refund, but from what I've read in this community, it's pretty standard during early filing season. I'm trying to resist the urge to check WMR multiple times a day (easier said than done lol). Thanks to everyone sharing their experiences - it really helps knowing we're not alone in this!

•Totally feel you on the WMR checking obsession 😅 I'm literally refreshing it like every few hours even though I know it won't change that fast. It's reassuring to see so many people in the same boat with the EIC review thing. Makes me feel less like I did something wrong on my return. The waiting game is brutal when you really need that money but sounds like we just gotta be patient!

Been through this exact same situation last year! Got the "Action Required" message in late January and was stressed for weeks thinking I made some mistake on my return. Never received any mail from the IRS and my refund eventually processed normally - took about 3 weeks total from when I first saw that message. The IRS is just being extra cautious with their fraud detection systems, especially during early filing season. Since you filed for 2024, you're in the first wave of returns they're processing and they tend to flag more for review during this period. The fact that the message specifically says "if we need additional information, we'll mail a notice" means you're in wait-and-see mode. Don't stress too much about it - the vast majority of these reviews clear up without any action needed from you!

•This is super helpful to hear from someone who went through the exact same thing! 3 weeks feels manageable when you put it that way. I keep telling myself that no news is good news since they said they'd mail something if they actually needed info from me. It's just hard not to overthink it when you see that "Action Required" message staring at you, you know? Thanks for sharing your experience - definitely makes me feel more confident that this will resolve on its own!

I'm going through the exact same thing right now! Filed my 2024 return about 10 days ago and just got hit with that "Action Required" message yesterday. Like you, I haven't received any mail yet and was starting to panic thinking I messed something up. Reading through everyone's responses here is honestly such a relief - it sounds like this is way more common than I thought, especially for early filers. I also claimed EIC so that probably explains the extra scrutiny. It's so frustrating when you're depending on that refund and then you see those words "Action Required" pop up! But it seems like most people are saying it resolves itself within a few weeks. Definitely going to try to stop obsessively checking WMR every day (keyword: try lol). Thanks for posting this question - you're definitely not alone in this situation!

•Right there with you! Just got the same message a couple days ago and was spiraling until I found this thread. It's crazy how that "Action Required" wording makes it sound so urgent and scary when apparently it's just their standard review process. I'm also trying to break the WMR checking habit but it's so hard when you're anxious about it! At least we're all suffering through the waiting game together 😅 Fingers crossed we all get good news in the next few weeks!

I'm in the exact same situation! Filed my 2024 return about two weeks ago and got that dreaded "Action Required" message when I checked WMR this morning. Haven't received any mail either and was starting to panic. Reading through all these responses is honestly such a huge relief - I had no idea this was so common during early filing season! I also claimed EIC which definitely explains the extra review. It's so nerve-wracking when you need that refund and then see those words pop up, but it sounds like most people are saying it clears up on its own within a few weeks. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences - really helps to know we're all in this together! Going to try my best to stop checking WMR obsessively (we'll see how that goes lol) and just wait it out. 🤞

•Same here! Filed about the same time as you and just saw this message pop up yesterday. It's honestly so reassuring to see how many of us are dealing with this right now - makes me feel way less alone in the stress! The EIC thing seems to be a common thread for a lot of us getting flagged. I keep reminding myself that the message literally says they'll mail us if they need anything, so no mail = probably good news? Easier said than done to not worry about it though! This community is seriously a lifesaver for keeping anxiety in check during tax season 😊

I'm dealing with this exact same situation right now! Filed my 2024 return about 2 weeks ago and got the "Action Required" message when I checked this morning. Like many others here, I also claimed EIC and haven't received any mail yet. It's so stressful seeing those words pop up when you're counting on your refund! But reading through everyone's experiences here is incredibly reassuring - it sounds like this is just part of their standard review process for early filers, especially those claiming EIC. The fact that the message specifically says they'll mail us if they actually need information gives me some comfort. I'm going to try to follow everyone's advice and resist the urge to check WMR constantly (though we all know how that goes 😅). Thanks for starting this thread - it's amazing how much better it feels knowing so many of us are going through the same thing!

•Welcome to the "Action Required" anxiety club! 😅 I'm literally going through the exact same thing right now - filed about 10 days ago, claimed EIC, and just got this message yesterday. The waiting is absolutely brutal when you need that money! But honestly, reading through this whole thread has been like therapy for my tax stress. It's wild how many of us early filers with EIC are getting flagged right now - definitely seems like it's just their standard fraud prevention stuff kicking into high gear. I keep telling myself that if they actually needed something from me, they would've been way more specific about it instead of just saying "we'll mail you if we need info." Hang in there - sounds like most people get through this within a few weeks without any drama! 🤞

I'm literally in the exact same boat! Got that "Action Required" message three days ago for my 2024 return and have been checking WMR obsessively ever since (I know, I know, it's not helping but I can't stop 😅). Also claimed EIC so that definitely explains the extra scrutiny. What's really helping me stay calm is remembering that the message specifically says "If we need additional information, we'll mail a notice" - so if we haven't gotten anything in the mail, that's actually a good sign! The IRS isn't exactly known for being subtle when they actually need something from you, so the fact that it's just this generic review message probably means we're in the standard processing queue. From everything I'm reading here, it sounds like early filers with EIC claims are getting flagged left and right this year, but most are clearing up within 2-4 weeks. Trying to remind myself that patience is key, even though waiting for money you're counting on is absolutely brutal! Thanks for posting this - it's so reassuring to see we're definitely not alone in this stressful limbo! 🙏

•Ugh, I feel you on the obsessive WMR checking! 😅 I'm literally doing the same thing even though I know it's pointless. Got my "Action Required" message about a week ago and have been spiraling ever since. But you're so right about the wording - if they actually needed something urgent from us, they'd be way more direct about it. The IRS doesn't mess around when they want documentation! Reading everyone's stories here has been such a huge comfort. It really does seem like all of us early filers with EIC are getting caught up in their fraud prevention sweep. The waiting is absolutely torture when you need that money, but at least we're all suffering through it together! Fingers crossed we'll all be celebrating our refund approvals in a few weeks 🤞

I'm going through the EXACT same thing right now! Filed my 2024 return about 12 days ago and woke up to that "Action Required" message this morning. My heart literally dropped when I saw it because I was counting on my refund to catch up on some bills. Like so many others here, I also claimed EIC which seems to be the common thread for most of us getting this status. Reading through everyone's experiences has been such a huge relief though - I had no idea this was so normal for early filers! The fact that the message specifically says they'll mail us if they actually need something gives me hope that this is just their standard verification process. It's just so hard not to panic when you see those words "Action Required" especially when you haven't done anything wrong. I'm definitely guilty of the obsessive WMR checking too 😅 Even though I know it's not going to change every few hours, I can't help myself! But hearing from people who went through this exact situation last year and had it resolve without any issues is keeping me somewhat sane. Fingers crossed we'll all be getting good news in the next few weeks! Thanks for posting this - it's amazing how much better it feels knowing we're not alone in this stressful waiting game! 🤞

•I'm literally in the same exact situation! Got that dreaded message yesterday morning and my stomach just dropped. Also claimed EIC and filed about 2 weeks ago. It's honestly so comforting to see how many of us are dealing with this right now - I was convinced I had somehow messed up my return! The obsessive WMR checking is so real though 😅 I've probably refreshed it like 20 times today even though I know nothing will change. But reading everyone's experiences here has been like a therapy session for my tax anxiety! Sounds like we just gotta ride this out for a few more weeks. We got this! 💪

I'm literally going through this exact same situation right now! Got the "Action Required" message for my 2024 return about 5 days ago and have been stressed out ever since. Also claimed EIC like so many others here, which definitely seems to be triggering these reviews. Reading through all these responses has been such a lifesaver for my anxiety! I had no idea this was so common during early filing season. The fact that so many people are experiencing the same thing with EIC claims makes me feel way less like I did something wrong on my return. The obsessive WMR checking is SO real 😅 I've been refreshing it multiple times a day even though I know logically it's not going to change that fast. But it's hard not to when you're depending on that refund! I keep reminding myself that the message says they'll mail us if they actually need information, and since I haven't gotten anything in the mail yet, that's probably a good sign. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences - it's amazing how much better it feels knowing we're all in this stressful waiting game together! Hoping we all get good news soon 🤞
