Still showing "Action Required" 6 days after ID verification - blank transcript and 2024 return under review
So I verified my identity through the IRS online portal on Thursday 03/18, but when I check Where's My Refund, it still shows 'Action Required' and says they're reviewing my return. I'm getting a specific message that states: "We received your tax return and are reviewing it. If we need additional information, we'll mail a notice with further instructions." The weird part is my transcript is completely blank when I try to access it. I can see on the IRS website that my refund status shows "Action Required" with an exclamation mark, and there's a section that says "Please read the following information related to your tax situation. You may need to provide additional information to receive your full refund." The website confirms that if I've already received a notice, I should follow the instructions, and if they determine no additional information is needed, they'll continue to process my refund. When I look at my personal tax information section on the page, it shows: Tax Year: 2024 Filing Status: Single Has anyone else gone through this? It's been almost a week now since I verified my identity, and I'm getting worried that something else is wrong. I checked the IRS official website again today, and nothing has changed. I'm concerned because I was expecting my refund by now, and I don't understand why my transcript is blank if they have my return and are reviewing it.

This is actually pretty common this filing season. When you verify your identity, it typically takes 9-21 days for the IRS systems to fully process and update your status. The blank transcript is normal during this verification period - it's essentially in a holding pattern until your identity verification is fully processed through their system. During this time, the WMR tool will continue to show the 'Action Required' message until the verification is complete and your return moves to the next processing stage. As long as you completed the identity verification successfully, you shouldn't need to do anything else unless you receive a specific notice in the mail. The IRS is experiencing significant delays this year with identity verification processing. Keep checking your transcript every few days - you should see it populate with information once your verification is processed, and that's typically the first sign of movement before WMR updates.

•Thanks for the info! That makes me feel better. I'll try to be patient for a few more weeks.

•I had the exact same situation last year and it took about 14 days after verification before anything changed. Hang in there!

•Does anyone know if calling the IRS would help speed this up at all? I'm in a similar situation.

•Calling typically won't speed up the process - the verification system is automated. But if you're approaching 3+ weeks with no change, then a call might help determine if there's another issue.

I was in the exact same boat last month. What really helped me was using taxr.ai to analyze my transcript situation. Even though it was blank at first, once it updated, the tool helped me understand exactly what was happening with my return and predicted when I'd get my refund. It made so much more sense than trying to decode all those random codes and dates myself or posting in forums hoping someone knew the answer. https://taxr.ai saved me so much stress!

•Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

•It does WAY more than just read the transcript. It analyzes all the codes, explains what each one means for YOUR specific situation, and tells you exactly where your return is in the process. It even gave me a predicted refund date that was spot on! I'm telling everyone about it now because the IRS makes everything so complicated and this actually made it make sense.

•It's not free but honestly worth every penny. I spent weeks trying to figure out my situation before finding this. The peace of mind alone was worth it, and it ended up being right about everything.

•Just tried taxr.ai after seeing this and OMG WHERE HAS THIS BEEN ALL MY LIFE?? 🙌 It literally explained everything about my refund situation in plain English. No more guessing or anxiety. Everyone dealing with the IRS needs to know about this!

•You just upload your transcript from the IRS website - the same one you can download yourself. It's basically just analyzing information you already have access to, but making sense of it all.

After dealing with the same issue for almost 3 weeks, I finally found a way to get someone from the IRS on the phone using the Claimyr app (claimyr.com). I was at my wit's end trying to figure out why my transcript was blank even after verifying identity. The agent was able to confirm my verification was processed but there was a secondary review happening. Finally got some real answers instead of just checking WMR every 5 minutes like a crazy person!

•Wait how does this work? I've been calling the IRS for days and can never get through 😩

•It basically navigates all the phone menus for you and holds your place in line. Then when an agent is available, it calls you back and connects you. Saved me hours of listening to that horrible hold music! Talking to an actual agent got my refund moving again after weeks of nothing.

•Did you actually get helpful info from the agent? Every time I've called before they just tell me to wait.

•Yeah the agent I spoke with was super helpful! She could see notes on my account that weren't visible to me and confirmed my ID verification was received but that there was another review happening. Gave me a much better timeline than just the generic "9 weeks" answer on the website. Best money I've spent during this whole tax nightmare!

This is my third year in a row with this EXACT issue. The IRS is completely broken. Last year I verified my ID and had a blank transcript for 6 weeks before anything changed. Then suddenly one day everything updated at once and I got my refund 3 days later. They're just drowning in backlogs and their systems dont talk to each other properly.

Are you sure you verified through the official IRS site? There are a lot of scam sites out there. The official verification should be through ID.me or on IRS.gov directly. If you went through any other site, you might want to call the IRS.

The blank transcript is actually a good sign! It means your return is in the verification queue and hasn't been rejected. When my transcript went from blank to showing codes, that's when I knew things were moving along. Took about 12 days after I verified before anything showed up.

Nia Thompson
•Really? That makes me feel better. I thought maybe something was wrong with my account.

•Nope! Think of it like your return is in a holding pattern. Once verification is complete, they'll move it back into normal processing and your transcript will start showing codes and dates.

Just as an FYI - I verified on 3/05 and my transcript stayed blank until 3/22. Then suddenly it populated with a direct deposit date for 3/27! Hang in there, the system is just slow af this year.

Pro tip: check your transcript around 3-4am EST on Friday mornings. That's when the IRS typically does their weekly updates. That's how I caught mine updating after verification last month.

Blank transcript usually means one of three things: 1) Your return is in the verification queue, 2) Your return hasn't been processed yet, or 3) There's an issue with your account access. Since you verified your identity, it's most likely #1. I went through this last year and it sucked, but eventually resolved without me having to do anything else.

After two months of dealing with a similar issue I broke down and used taxr.ai and it immediately explained what was happening with my transcript and why I was stuck in verification. Took all the guesswork out of it. https://taxr.ai

•It showed me exactly which verification stage I was in (there are apparently multiple internal stages), explained all the transcript codes in plain english, and gave me an estimated completion date based on current processing patterns. Way more detailed than anything I could figure out from just looking at the transcript myself or googling random codes.

Check if your 2024 tax return transcript is available. Sometimes account transcript stays blank but your return transcript is available. If your return transcript is available but account transcript is blank, that's actually a good sign - means they have your return but haven't started processing the account side yet.

If it's been more than 2 weeks since verification and still no update, I highly recommend using claimyr.com to get through to an IRS agent. I spent WEEKS with a blank transcript after verification last year, and when I finally got through to someone, they found an issue that needed to be fixed that wasn't showing up anywhere online. Talking to a real person saved me months of waiting.

•I don't remember exactly but whatever it was, it was worth every penny to finally talk to someone who could see what was actually happening with my return. After months of checking WMR daily and getting nowhere, it was such a relief to get actual answers.

Don't panic! This is completely normal. The IRS has to manually review returns after identity verification and they're working through a massive backlog right now. Your blank transcript just means you're in the queue. I know it's stressful but there's literally nothing you can do but wait at this point.

when u say blank transcript, do u mean you can access the transcript page but the actual transcript shows $0 or N/A for everything? Or do u mean u can't even access the transcript page at all? those are two different situations

•I can access the transcript page but everything for 2025 shows "No record of return filed" or N/A. All the previous years have data.

•ok thats normal for the verification process then. if u couldn't access the page at all that would be a different issue. you're good, just gotta wait it out.

This happened to me and I found out I had to verify my identity TWICE - once through ID.me and once through the separate IRS verification process. Check your mail carefully for ANY letters from the IRS because they might be asking for a second verification that you missed.

•Yeah there are actually two different verification systems they use. Super confusing and they don't explain it well at all. Check for any letters with a reference to form 5071C or form 4883C.

After waiting for 3 weeks with blank transcripts, I used the Claimyr app to get an IRS agent on the phone (claimyr.com) and found out there was an additional verification step needed that wasn't showing anywhere online. Got it resolved in one call instead of waiting months for another letter. Sometimes you just need to talk to an actual human at the IRS to figure out what's really going on!

•In my case they needed to verify my previous address because I had moved. It was something that wouldn't have shown up anywhere online, only a human looking at my file could see the flag on my account. So glad I didn't just keep waiting!

I'm going through this exact same situation right now! Filed my 2024 return in early February, got the ID verification letter, completed it through ID.me about 10 days ago, and I'm still stuck with "Action Required" on WMR and completely blank transcripts. It's so frustrating not knowing what's happening or how much longer this will take. Reading everyone's experiences here is actually really helpful though - sounds like 2-3 weeks is pretty normal for the verification to fully process through their systems. I'll try to be patient and check my transcripts early Friday mornings like someone suggested. Thanks for posting this question because I was starting to think something was seriously wrong with my return!

•I'm so glad you found this thread helpful! I was feeling the exact same way - like maybe I did something wrong or my return got lost in the system. It's actually really reassuring to hear that so many people are going through the same thing. The 2-3 week timeline seems to be what most people are experiencing, so hopefully we'll both see some movement soon. I'm definitely going to try that Friday morning check too! Keep me posted on how it goes for you.

I'm in almost the exact same situation! I verified my identity through ID.me about 8 days ago and still have the "Action Required" message on WMR with completely blank transcripts. It's been driving me crazy wondering if I did something wrong or if there's another issue. Reading through all these responses is actually really reassuring - it sounds like this is totally normal and the 9-21 day timeframe that Mateo mentioned seems to be accurate based on everyone's experiences. I'm going to try checking my transcripts early Friday morning like Mei suggested and just try to be patient. Thanks for posting this question because I was starting to worry that my return was lost in the system or something!

•Welcome to the waiting club! 😅 I'm about a week ahead of you in the same process (verified on 3/18) and it's honestly such a relief to see so many others going through this exact situation. The Friday morning transcript check tip is genius - I had no idea the IRS did weekly updates at specific times. I'm definitely setting an alarm for 3am this Friday! It's wild how the IRS makes this whole process so stressful when apparently it's just their normal (incredibly slow) procedure. Hoping we both see some movement soon!

I'm in a very similar situation and wanted to share what I learned from calling the IRS taxpayer advocate service. I verified my identity about 10 days ago and was getting anxious about the blank transcript and "Action Required" status. The advocate explained that after ID verification, returns go into what they call a "manual processing queue" where they have to be reviewed by an actual person rather than processed automatically. This is why it takes so much longer than normal processing. She said the blank transcript is actually expected during this phase because the system essentially "holds" your return information until the manual review is complete. Once that happens, everything should populate at once and move to the next processing stage. The advocate also mentioned that calling repeatedly or trying to expedite doesn't help because it's just a matter of working through the queue in order. Hope this helps explain what's happening behind the scenes - it made me feel much better about the wait!

•This is incredibly helpful information! Thank you so much for taking the time to call the taxpayer advocate service and sharing what you learned. The explanation about the "manual processing queue" makes so much more sense than just being told to "wait 9 weeks" with no context. It's actually reassuring to know that the blank transcript is expected during this phase and that everything will populate all at once when the review is complete. I really appreciate you sharing this - it definitely helps explain what's happening behind the scenes and makes the waiting a bit more bearable knowing there's an actual process happening even if we can't see it!

I'm dealing with this exact same situation right now! Verified my identity through the IRS portal 8 days ago and still showing "Action Required" with completely blank transcripts for 2024. It's so frustrating not knowing if everything is processing correctly or if there's another issue. After reading through everyone's experiences here, it sounds like the 2-3 week timeframe is pretty standard and the blank transcript during verification is actually normal. Really appreciate Oliver's explanation about the manual processing queue - that makes way more sense than the vague "we're reviewing your return" message. Going to try checking my transcript early Friday morning and just try to be patient. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences, it's really reassuring to know this is a common issue this year and not something I messed up!

•I'm in the exact same boat! Just verified my identity 5 days ago and seeing the same "Action Required" message with blank transcripts. It's such a relief to find this thread and realize this is totally normal. The explanation about the manual processing queue really helps - I was starting to think my return got lost or something went wrong. Going to try that Friday morning check tip too. Fingers crossed we all see some movement soon! 🤞
