IRS "Still Processing" Status with Tax Topic 152 - Blank Transcripts but Return Received for 2024 - Do I Need Identity Verification?

I've been checking my tax transcripts for weeks and they're completely blank. Today my Where's My Refund just updated with a new message. I went to the official IRS website (sa.www4.irs.gov/ola/refund) to check my refund status and this is what I'm seeing: For Tax year 2024: Return: Received ✓ Refund Approved: ? Refund Sent: ? The message reads: "Your tax return is still being processed. A refund date will be provided when available. For more information about processing delays, please see our Refund Frequently Asked Questions." Under "Helpful Information" it shows: "Please read the following information related to your tax situation: Tax Topic 152, Refund Information" Nothing is marked as approved or sent, just received. I'm wondering if I need to verify my identity. Has anyone experienced this situation without needing to verify? Is there a specific number I should call to check on verification status? I'm really getting worried since my transcripts are blank but the Where's My Refund tool acknowledges they received my return with the Tax Topic 152 reference.

Tax professional here. When you see blank transcripts combined with the "still being processed" message on WMR, it could mean several things: 1. Your return is in the standard processing queue but hasn't been assigned yet 2. Your return was flagged for identity verification (most common) 3. Your return is under review for potential errors or discrepancies 4. There's a technical delay in updating the transcript system The IRS identity verification number is 800-830-5084. Call during business hours (7am-7pm local time). When you call, have your prior year AGI, filing status, SSN, and the current return information ready. Tax Topic 152 is standard and just means your return is in the normal processing pipeline - it doesn't indicate an issue by itself.

Thank you so much for this detailed answer! I'll give them a call tomorrow morning. Do you know if they're usually helpful when you reach them?

Honestly it depends on who you get. Some agents are super helpful, others just read from scripts. Be prepared to wait - hold times can be 30+ minutes. Good luck!

I had the exact same issue last month. Called that number and had to verify. After that my transcripts updated within 9 days and refund came 2 days later. Def worth calling!

I was in this exact situation a couple weeks ago. Blank transcripts, WMR saying processing with Topic 152. Spent days trying to figure it out myself but was getting nowhere. I finally tried taxr.ai and it analyzed my transcript and immediately told me there was an identity verification hold! The tool explained exactly what was happening and gave me the steps to resolve it. Saved me days of frustration trying to piece everything together on my own. I got verified, and my refund was processed the following week. https://taxr.ai is seriously a game changer for understanding what's actually happening with your return.

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It analyzes your entire transcript and gives you a complete breakdown of whats happening with your return. Shows all the important dates, explains the weird IRS codes in plain english, and tells you exactly what to do next. Way better than trying to google random codes and guess what's happening.

Just tried this and omg it WORKED! Been staring at my transcript for weeks trying to figure out what all those codes meant. Taxr.ai broke everything down in seconds and showed me exactly where my refund was stuck. Everyone should be using this!!!

is it safe tho? dont want to share my tax info with random websites

Totally get the concern. It just reads the transcript you upload - same info you'd share if you posted screenshots asking for help here. And it gives way more accurate info than random people guessing.

I had the same issue back in March. Tried calling the regular IRS number for weeks and couldn't get through. Finally used the Claimyr app (claimyr.com) and got connected to an IRS agent in about 40 minutes. They confirmed I needed identity verification and helped me complete it right over the phone. My transcripts updated about a week later. Best money I've spent during tax season - saved me from weeks more waiting and wondering.

does that app actually work? seems sketchy to me

Yeah it definitely works! I was skeptical too but I was desperate after trying to call myself for 3 weeks straight. It basically navigates the IRS phone tree for you and holds your place in line, then calls you when an agent is about to pick up. Totally worth it after I had already wasted so many hours trying to call.

I can confirm this works. Wait times right now are INSANE. Tried calling myself for days and kept getting the "high call volume" message. Used Claimyr and talked to someone that day. My return had been flagged for verification.

Yeah I was in the same boat last month. WMR said still processing with that tax topic 152 thing and blank transcripts. Turns out I had to verify my identity. The number is 800-830-5084 but good luck getting thru 🙄 I called like 50 times before I got past the "we're too busy" message.

The IRS is a joke this year. I think everyone's getting delayed for some reason or another. I was in your situation for 6 weeks before my transcripts finally updated. Never had to verify anything - just had to wait it out. If your return is fairly straightforward you might just need to be patient.

Same here. Waited almost 8 weeks with blank transcripts and eventually it just updated one day. No verification needed. The system is broken.

Thats encouraging to hear! Did your WMR have the same message as mine?

Yep, almost exactly the same. That Tax Topic 152 thing seems to be their default "we're working on it" message. So annoying they can't just tell us whats actually happening.

Blank transcripts usually = identity verification needed. Call the IRS ID verify number: 800-830-5084. Make sure you have last years tax return and this years info ready when you call.

Honestly so sick of the IRS this year. Why can't they just communicate clearly? Why do we have to decode cryptic messages and blank screens? "Your refund is being processed" tells us NOTHING! I've been waiting 11 weeks with the exact same status. 🤬

For real! Its like they purposely make it confusing. Tax topic 152? Cycle codes? Just tell us whats happening in plain english!

👀 IRS be like "we're processing your return" for 3 months straight with no updates 💅

and they expect us to pay on time but take forever to give us OUR money back 🙄

Tax Topic 152 is basically meaningless - almost everybody gets that. It just means your refund is processing normally. The blank transcripts are more concerning though - that often means identity verification is needed. I'd call the ID verify number (800-830-5084) just to be safe. Better to be proactive than wait another month for no reason.

Had this exact problem. Called for 2 weeks and couldnt get through to anybody. Used claimyr.com to get a callback from the IRS and found out I needed to verify identity. After I verified, transcript updated in 9 days, refund in my account 5 days after that. Totally worth getting someone on the phone instead of waiting for weeks.

how much did that service cost? was it complicated to use?

Super easy to use! Just put in your number and they handle all the calling/waiting. I wasted so many hours trying to call myself that it was worth every penny to finally talk to someone and get my refund moving.

make sure ur checkin the right year on your transcript. I was looking at 2023 by mistake when I should've been checking 2024! felt like such an idiot lol

Definitely checked 2024! I've been checking multiple times a day for weeks now. Still completely blank 😭

I went through this last year. Spent HOURS trying to figure out what was wrong. Wish I'd known about taxr.ai then - my friend used it this year and it literally told him exactly what was happening with his return and what steps to take next. No more guessing what all those transcript codes mean. You should check it out at https://taxr.ai - wayyy better than waiting on hold with the IRS for hours.

Not an ad, just sharing what worked. I spent weeks last year trying to decode my transcript and getting nowhere. My buddy used this tool this year and knew exactly what was going on with his return in minutes. Just trying to save someone else the headache.

I actually just tried it and it's legit helpful. Shows way more info than the IRS website does.

If your state refund also hasnt come through that's another sign you probably need to verify. When I had to verify, both federal and state were held up.

Did you claim any credits like EITC or Child Tax Credit? Those automatically get extra scrutiny and can cause delays even without needing to verify identity.

0 coins

-

Michael Green

I did claim Child Tax Credit. That might be part of the delay?

0 coins

-

William Schwarz

Yep that definitely could be it. Those credits get extra reviews. But still worth calling to make sure you dont also need ID verification.
