2024 Tax Return Filed April 15: IRS Shows Processing Delay Message, Return Received But Transcript Still Blank After 3 Weeks
I filed my 2024 taxes on April 15th and I'm getting worried because when I check the Where's My Refund tool, it's showing a processing delay message. It specifically says "We apologize, but your return processing has been delayed beyond the normal timeframe. You can continue to check back here for the most up to date information regarding your refund. We understand your tax refund is very important and we are working to process your return as quickly as possible." The tool shows "Tax year 2024" with checkmarks next to "Return Received" but no checkmarks next to "Refund Approved" or "Refund Sent" yet. It's suggesting I read "Tax Topic 152, Refund Information" under the "Helpful Information" section. There's also a note saying "For refund information, please continue to check here, or use our free mobile app, IRS2Go. Updates to refund status are made no more than once a day." When I try to view my transcript online, it's completely blank - nothing is showing up at all. It's been almost 3 weeks now since I filed. Has anyone experienced this before? Should I be concerned or is this normal after only filing a few weeks ago? I was expecting to at least see something on my transcript by now, but the IRS website (sa.www4.irs.gov) is just showing this delay message with no further details about why or how long it might take.

Tax Topic 152 just means you're eligible for a refund, so that's actually good news. The blank transcript means the IRS hasn't processed your return yet. This is very common especially since you only filed about 3 weeks ago. The IRS is saying their normal processing time is 21 days, but in reality, many returns are taking 30-45 days or more this year. The "delayed beyond normal timeframe" message usually appears when: 1) Your return needs manual review 2) You claimed certain credits that require extra verification 3) There's a high volume of returns being processed I wouldn't worry too much yet. Keep checking your transcript every few days - when it updates, you'll see a bunch of codes appear at once. The important ones to look for will be 846 (refund issued) or 570/971 (hold/notice being sent).

β’Thank you so much for the detailed explanation! That makes me feel a lot better. I'll keep checking my transcript periodically and try to be patient.

β’This is good advice! I filed early March and had to wait like 6 weeks before my transcript updated, then got my refund a week later. The IRS is just super backed up this year π

β’Does anyone know why the IRS is so slow this year? I feel like its getting worse every tax season...

β’They're dealing with staffing shortages, outdated technology systems, and implementing tax law changes. Plus they're still catching up from the pandemic backlog. It's kinda a perfect storm of inefficiency πͺοΈ

I was in the exact same situation and was staring at a blank transcript for weeks! I found this tool called taxr.ai that totally saved me from the stress. It analyzes your transcript and explains what's happening with your return in plain English. When my transcript finally updated, it decoded all the codes and gave me an actual timeline. Honestly so much better than trying to figure out all those cryptic IRS codes myself. You should check it out: https://taxr.ai

β’Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

β’It does way more! The tool connects to your IRS account and analyzes all your tax data - not just the transcript but also understands your tax situation. It explains the codes, gives refund predictions, identifies issues, and even gives personalized advice. It saved me HOURS of stress and confusion. I'm telling all my friends to use it this year!

β’Totally get the concern! I researched it thoroughly before using. They use bank-level security and don't store your credentials. It just helps interpret what's already in your account. Honestly, it's been a game changer - especially when my transcript finally updated with all those confusing codes!

I had a similar issue with a delayed refund and couldn't get through to anyone at the IRS after trying for DAYS. I finally used the Claimyr app (claimyr.com) and it was amazing! Instead of dealing with busy signals, they secured a spot in the phone queue and had an IRS agent call ME back directly. The agent was able to tell me exactly why my return was delayed (it was flagged for a simple verification) and how long until my refund would process. Talking to an actual human at the IRS was the only thing that finally got my refund moving.

β’Wait does this actually work? I've been trying to call the IRS for 2 weeks with no luck.

β’100% works. I was super skeptical but desperate after wasting hours on hold. The service basically navigates the phone tree for you and holds your place in line. When an agent is available, they connect you. Best money I ever spent considering the refund I was waiting on.

β’Not at all! They don't ask for any tax info - they just help you get through to an actual IRS agent. Then you talk directly with the IRS. After trying to call for weeks and getting nowhere, this solved my problem in one day. My refund was released 3 days after talking to the agent.

β’Just used this yesterday and it actually worked. Got a callback in about 45 mins. Found out my return was sitting in errors department because they couldn't verify my identity! Would have never known without talking to someone π

I hate to break it to you but welcome to the club π I filed back in February and my transcript was blank until early April. The IRS is a disaster this year. Doesn't help that they won't answer the dang phone either. The waiting game is absolute torture.

Tax topic 152 usually shows up for everyone eligible for a refund. It's not really an indicator of anything good or bad. Just means you're in the system. Blank transcript just means they haven't started processing your return yet. My advice: forget about it for another 2 weeks then check again. The more you check, the more stressed you'll get.

Check your mail carefully! Sometimes they send letters requesting additional information, and if you miss those, it can delay things even further. I had a similar situation with a blank transcript and ended up getting a letter asking for ID verification.

β’Good point! I haven't received anything in the mail yet but I'll keep an eye out. How long did your refund take after verifying your ID?

Sara Hellquiem
β’About 3 weeks after verification. But I know people who got it faster. Just depends on how backed up they are I guess.

Do u have any credits like EIC or child tax credit? Those always take longer for the IRS to process. They do extra verification on those returns to prevent fraud. I'm on week 8 of waiting with EIC π

β’Yes I claimed both! That might explain the delay then. 8 weeks though? That's crazy! Hope you get yours soon.

THE IRS IS A JOKE THIS YEAR!!! Filed 2/1, transcript blank til 3/20, then got codes 570/971, had to verify identity on [ID.me](https://ID.me), then FINALLY got my $$ on 4/12. The entire system needs to be rebuilt from the ground up.

β’OMG YESSS π The IRS still uses technology from the 1960s! NINETEEN SIXTIES! How are we supposed to have a functioning tax system when they're using computers older than most of us??

Have you tried calling the IRS? I know it's a pain, but sometimes that's the only way to find out what's really going on. Call early in the morning right when they open - that's when I had the best luck getting through.

Just so you know, sometimes transcripts don't update for WEEKS and then suddenly everything happens at once. My transcript was empty for 6 weeks, then it updated on a Friday and I had my refund the following Wednesday. The system is super glitchy too - my transcript wasn't showing on desktop but would show on mobile. Try checking different ways.

I used taxr.ai when this happened to me and it was insanely helpful! The tool explained what was happening with my return even when my transcript was empty, and then gave me a clear timeline once it updated. Saved me so much stress trying to figure out all those stupid codes. https://taxr.ai

β’It's definitely not an ad - I'm just a regular person who used it and was impressed. My return had EIC and was taking forever. The tool predicted accurately when my refund would come and explained all the verification steps it was going through. Way better than the generic WMR messages.

After waiting 9 weeks with ZERO updates on WMR or transcript, I used claimyr.com to get through to an IRS agent. Found out my return was flagged for manual review because of a mismatch between what my employer reported and what I entered. The agent fixed it right on the call and my refund was approved 2 days later. Sometimes you just need to talk to a human to solve these things.

β’Considering I was waiting on a $3,800 refund that was stuck in limbo, getting a live agent on the phone who could actually fix my issue was the best decision I made. Would have kept waiting for months otherwise. The peace of mind alone was worth it.

β’So it actually worked? Can they really get you through to a live person at the IRS?
0 coins
Evelyn Kim
β’Yep! They navigate all the phone menus and hold for you, then when they get a live agent, you get a call connecting you directly. I had tried calling myself about 15 times before giving up and trying this. Got connected to an agent within 40 minutes.

They don't want to give you your money back. that's why they make it so complicated. STOP GIVING THE GOVERNMENT INTEREST FREE LOANS PEOPLE! Adjust your withholding so you break even every year. problem solved.

β’Not everyone has that option. Some of us get refundable credits that you can only get as a refund, like EIC or Child Tax Credit. Can't adjust withholding for those.

β’Fair point. But most people overpay without realizing it. The average refund is like $3000 - that's $250 a month people could have in their paychecks instead.

I'm going through the exact same thing right now! Filed on April 10th and my transcript has been completely blank for over 3 weeks. The "processing delay" message on Where's My Refund is so frustrating because it gives you zero useful information about what's actually happening or how long to expect. From what I've been reading, it seems like the IRS is just really backed up this year. I've been trying to stay patient but it's hard when you're expecting that refund money. At least we're not alone in this - sounds like a lot of people are experiencing the same delays. I'm going to try calling them early Tuesday morning like someone suggested above. If that doesn't work, I might look into one of those callback services people mentioned. This waiting game is driving me crazy!

I'm in a very similar situation - filed on April 12th and have been staring at that same processing delay message for weeks now. My transcript is also completely blank which is so frustrating! It's reassuring to see that this seems to be a widespread issue this year and not just something specific to my return. I've been checking obsessively but I think I need to take the advice here and try to check less frequently for my own sanity. Has anyone found that calling the IRS early morning actually works? I'm debating whether it's worth the time investment or if I should just wait it out a bit longer. The uncertainty is definitely the worst part - I just want to know if there's an actual issue or if it's just normal processing delays. Thanks for sharing your experience - it helps to know we're all going through this together!

β’I'm in the same boat too! Filed April 14th and it's been radio silence from the IRS. The blank transcript is so nerve-wracking - you'd think they'd at least acknowledge they received it somehow. From what I've read in this thread, it sounds like calling early morning (Tuesday-Thursday around 7am) has the best success rate. I'm planning to try that next week if nothing changes. The callback services some people mentioned sound interesting too, though I'm still on the fence about paying for that. It's definitely helpful to see so many others going through the exact same thing. Makes me feel less like I did something wrong with my return. Hang in there - sounds like most people eventually get their refunds, just takes way longer than it should! π€

I'm going through the exact same thing! Filed on April 8th and have been watching that dreaded "processing delay" message for what feels like forever. My transcript is also completely blank, which honestly makes me more anxious than if it showed something - anything - just to know they're working on it. Reading through all these responses has been really helpful though. It sounds like this is just the new normal for tax season unfortunately. The part about EIC and Child Tax Credit taking longer makes sense for my situation since I claimed both. I think I'm going to try the early morning calling strategy - Tuesday around 7am ET seems to be the consensus. If that doesn't work, I might look into one of those callback services people have mentioned. At this point I just want to talk to a human being who can tell me if there's actually an issue or if I'm just in the normal backup queue. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences - it really helps to know we're all dealing with this mess together! The IRS definitely needs to get their act together for next year. π€

β’I'm right there with you! Filed April 16th and dealing with the exact same situation - blank transcript and that vague "processing delay" message that tells you absolutely nothing useful. It's so frustrating when you're expecting that refund money and have no idea what's actually happening behind the scenes. The advice about calling early morning Tuesday-Thursday sounds solid based on what everyone's saying. I'm also considering those callback services - seems like several people here have had success with them when they couldn't get through on their own. It's definitely reassuring to see so many others in the same boat. Makes me feel like this is just the IRS being overwhelmed rather than something wrong with my specific return. Hopefully we all see some movement soon! The waiting game is brutal but at least we're not alone in this. π€

β’I'm in the exact same boat! Filed April 19th and have been getting that same useless "processing delay" message. It's so frustrating when they don't give you any real information about what's actually happening or how much longer to expect. The blank transcript thing is definitely scary - makes you wonder if they even have your return in the system. But after reading all these responses, it seems like this is just how things are going this year. The IRS is clearly overwhelmed and their systems are ancient. I'm also planning to try the early morning calling strategy. From what everyone's saying, Tuesday-Thursday around 7am ET seems to be the best bet. Those callback services sound interesting too - might be worth it if calling directly doesn't work. Thanks for posting about this - it's really comforting to know we're all dealing with the same nightmare. Hopefully our refunds start moving soon! The waiting is definitely the worst part. π€
