IRS "Where's My Refund" Still Shows Processing Since April - Tax Year 2024 Return Stuck at "Return Received" in August
Filed my taxes back in April this year and I'm still waiting for my refund in August. Just checked the IRS "Where's My Refund" tool and I'm feeling really anxious about what I'm seeing. The status page shows "Your tax return is still being processed. A refund date will be provided when available. For more information about processing delays, please see our Refund Frequently Asked Questions." It displays those three circles for the refund process (Return Received, Refund Approved, Refund Sent), but only the first circle "Return Received" is checked. The other two (Refund Approved and Refund Sent) are still unchecked. This is for Tax Year 2024, and I filed months ago! The IRS website has this note at the bottom saying "For refund information, please continue to check here, or use our free mobile app, IRS2Go. Updates to refund status are made no more than once a day." I've been checking almost daily for weeks now and nothing has changed. It's already August and I filed in April! I'm getting really worried because this seems like an abnormally long processing time. Should I be concerned about this delay? Has anyone else experienced this kind of wait time? Is there something wrong with my return or is this just normal IRS backlog? I tried looking at their "Refund Frequently Asked Questions" page as suggested, but it didn't really explain why MY refund specifically is taking so long. Should I call the IRS directly? Would that even help speed things up?

Based on what you're describing, it sounds like your return has been selected for additional review or verification. The WMR tool showing only 'Return Received' checked but not the other steps means the IRS has your return but hasn't completed processing it. This delay is likely due to identity verification requirements. The IRS may have sent (or will be sending) you a letter requesting that you verify your identity through ID.me. This is a common security measure, especially given increased fraud prevention efforts by the IRS in 2025. I would recommend: 1. Check your mail carefully for any notices from the IRS (particularly a 5071C or 5747C letter) 2. Call the IRS Identity Verification line at 800-830-5084 3. Have your prior year tax return, current tax return, and any supporting documents available when you call Don't wait for the letter if it's been months since filing. Being proactive can help resolve this much faster.

•Thank you so much for this detailed info! I haven't been checking my mail as carefully as I should. Will definitely call that number tomorrow.

•I had literally the same issue last year and it was exactly this. Had to verify with ID.me and then waited another 3 weeks for processing to complete. Good luck!

•The identity verification is such a pain. I had to upload my driver's license AND a utility bill when I did mine.

Listen, I went thru something just like this last month. Endless delays and checking WMR every day like a crazy person. I finally tried this tool called taxr.ai and it was a gamechanger. It actually analyzed my transcript, explained exactly what was happening with my return, and told me what steps to take. Saved me from pulling my hair out trying to decode all that IRS jargon. Instead of guessing or waiting on hold with the IRS for hours, I knew exactly what was going on. The site is https://taxr.ai - seriously worth checking out if you're stuck in limbo like I was.

•Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

•It does WAY more than just read the transcript. It analyzes all the codes and dates, explains what each one means specifically for YOUR situation, and gives you a timeline prediction. It even told me exactly why my refund was delayed and what I needed to do to fix it. Best money I've spent all year considering how much stress it saved me!

•Just tried taxr.ai after seeing your comment and WOW! It literally explained everything about my return that the IRS phone agents couldn't even tell me. If you're stuck in tax return purgatory like me, use this tool immediately! It's actually insane how much clearer everything is now.

•is this like a scam or something? seems too good to be true tbh

•Not a scam at all! It's just using AI to analyze and explain your transcript in plain English. The IRS website is terrible at explaining what's actually happening with your return, but this breaks it all down. Saved me from having to call the IRS like 5 times.

I was in the exact same boat as you for my 2024 taxes. Checked WMR constantly and was stuck on 'still processing' for months. Finally found this app called Claimyr that got me through to an actual IRS agent in less than 30 minutes! The agent explained I needed to verify my identity and helped me through the whole process. My refund was released about 10 days later. Here's the site if you want to check it out: claimyr.com - honestly was worth every penny to finally get an actual human on the phone who could help.

•Did this actually work? I've been trying to call IRS for weeks and can never get through.

•100% worked for me. I was super skeptical at first, but I was desperate after trying to call the IRS myself like 20 times. The app basically navigates all the phone menus for you and holds your place in line. Then when an agent is available, they call you back. Took about 25 mins when normally I couldn't even get in the queue.

•How much does it cost? Seems weird to pay just to talk to a government agency we already pay taxes to support 🙄

•Yeah it's frustrating to have to pay, but after wasting literally hours of my life trying to get through myself, it was totally worth it. I can't remember the exact cost but considering I was waiting on a $4k refund, it was nothing compared to finally getting my money.

•Just used claimyr.com myself and was connected to an IRS agent in 22 minutes! Found out my identity verification letter was sent to my old address. Agent helped me get it sorted right away.

•lol I get how it sounds, but when something actually works after months of frustration, you want to tell everyone. I was ready to hire a tax attorney before I found this, which would have cost wayyy more.

You definitely need to call them. I had the exact same message on WMR for like 3 months. Turns out they needed additional verification and sent a letter that I never received. Don't wait like I did, just call and be prepared to wait on hold forever. Bring a book lol.

The IRS is so behind this year its not even funny. My brother filed in February and didnt get his refund until June. They're claiming "processing delays" but its ridiculous. And they have the nerve to charge penalties if we file late! 🤬

•RIGHT?! The double standard is insane. We have to be on time or pay penalties but they can take 6+ months and it's just "processing delays" 🙄

Check your bank account - sometimes they deposit the refund without updating WMR. Happened to me this year.

My return got stuck in processing for almost 3 months this year. Turned out the issue was that they couldn't verify some info on my return. Had to call and go through a whole identity verification thing where they asked me super specific questions about my past addresses and loans. After that it was resolved in about 2 weeks. Hope that helps!

PSA for everyone in this thread: ID.me verification is required for a lot more returns this year as part of their fraud prevention. If your return isn't moving, this is likely why. They're supposed to send you a letter but sometimes they don't or it gets lost in the mail.

•The ID.me process is awful tho. It took me 4 tries to get through it because their facial recognition kept failing. So frustrating.

•You can request a live video call instead of using the facial recognition! Much easier.

If your on WMR and it says a letter will be sent, DEFINITELY call them asap. I waited 2 months for a letter that never came. When I finally got through to someone, they said they needed identity verification but the letter was sent to my old address (even though I updated it??). Such a mess. Don't wait like I did.

FWIW I had to use taxr.ai for a similar situation with my transcript this year - saved me from having to decipher all the cryptic codes and dates. Turns out my refund was delayed because they were verifying my W2 info. Kinda crazy we have to use 3rd party tools just to understand what's happening with our own tax returns but that's where we are I guess 🤷♀️

•Is taxr.ai better than just calling the IRS? What's the difference?

Zoe Papanikolaou
•In my experience YES way better than calling. When I called, the agent just read me the same info I could see online. The tool actually explained what was happening behind the scenes, what the codes meant specifically for my situation, and gave me a timeline for resolution. Saved me from having to call back multiple times.

Ugh I'm dealing with a similar issue now and it's so annoying! The WMR tool is basically useless. 'Your return is still processing' could mean literally anything. Going through this makes me realize our tax system is completely broken 😩

Hey man I had this exact same problem! If you go to the contact us page on irs.gov, you can request a transcript of your account. A lot of times that will show you what's going on that WMR doesn't tell you. For me, there was a hold code on my account that they never notified me about.

•Thanks for the tip! I'll try to get my transcript and see if it shows anything.

•The transcript codes are impossible to understand tho. It's like reading hieroglyphics unless you're a tax pro.

•True that. I had to google every code I saw on mine lol. That's why some people use that taxr.ai site to explain it all.

I've been through this exact same nightmare! Filed in March and didn't get my refund until July. The "still processing" message on WMR is basically code for "we need something from you but we're not going to tell you what it is clearly." In my case, it turned out they flagged my return for manual review because I had some freelance income that didn't match their records perfectly. No letter, no notification - just months of waiting and checking WMR obsessively. Here's what I wish I had done sooner: Get your Account Transcript from the IRS website (irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript). It shows way more detail than WMR about what's actually happening with your return. Look for any codes like 570 (additional account action pending) or 971 (notice issued). Also, try calling the Taxpayer Advocate Service at 877-777-4778 if you've been waiting more than 21 days past the original processing timeframe. They can sometimes help cut through the bureaucracy when regular IRS customer service can't. Don't panic - it's frustrating but you will get your refund eventually. The IRS is just incredibly slow and bad at communication this year.

•This is super helpful advice! I had no idea about the Account Transcript showing more details than WMR. Definitely going to check that out today. The Taxpayer Advocate Service tip is also great - I didn't know they could help with processing delays. Thanks for sharing your experience, it gives me hope that this will eventually get resolved even though it's taking forever.

I'm going through the exact same thing right now! Filed in March and it's been stuck on "Return Received" since then. The frustration is real - I've been checking WMR almost daily and it never changes. After reading through everyone's experiences here, it sounds like identity verification is the most likely culprit. I'm definitely going to call that 800-830-5084 number that StarStrider mentioned and check my mail more carefully for any IRS letters. It's honestly ridiculous that we have to become detectives just to figure out what's happening with our own tax returns. The WMR tool is basically useless - "still processing" could mean literally anything. At least now I know I'm not alone in this nightmare! Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences and tips. Going to try getting my account transcript too and see if that shows more details than the worthless WMR status page.

•I'm in the exact same boat as you and Isabella! Filed in April and still stuck on "Return Received" with no movement. It's so frustrating that we have to play detective just to understand what's happening with our own money. I'm definitely going to try calling that identity verification line tomorrow and also request my account transcript. The fact that so many people are dealing with this exact same issue makes me feel a bit better that it's not just me, but also shows how broken the system is right now. Really appreciate everyone sharing their experiences here - at least we're all suffering through this together! 😅
