IRS Transcript Shows "Return Not Present" 40 Days After Filing 2022 Taxes & ID Verification
I filed my 2022 taxes on January 30th and verified my identity about a week ago. Just pulled my transcript today (03-11-2023) and I'm getting really worried. The transcript shows "RETURN NOT PRESENT FOR THIS ACCOUNT" and every single field is empty. Looking at my Account Transcript for Form 1040 for tax period Dec. 31, 2022, I can see it's from the Internal Revenue Service, United States Department of the Treasury. The document clearly states "This Product Contains Sensitive Taxpayer Data" at both the top and bottom. The Request Date shows 03-11-2023 and the Response Date is also 03-11-2023, with a Tracking Number listed. My filing status shows as Single, but all the important numbers are completely blank: - ADJUSTED GROSS INCOME: [blank] - TAXABLE INCOME: [blank] - TAX PER RETURN: [blank] - SE TAXABLE INCOME TAXPAYER: [blank] - SE TAXABLE INCOME SPOUSE: [blank] - TOTAL SELF EMPLOYMENT TAX: [blank] The account balance shows $0.00, accrued interest is $0.00, and accrued penalty is $0.00 as of March 08, 2023. Even the exemptions field just shows "00". There's a section that specifically states "ANY MINUS SIGN SHOWN BELOW SIGNIFIES A CREDIT AMOUNT" but there are no credits listed. The most concerning part is under TRANSACTIONS where it literally says "No tax return filed" under the EXPLANATION OF TRANSACTION column. There's no CYCLE, DATE, or AMOUNT information provided. This is despite me filing over a month ago! At the very bottom of the transcript, it clearly states "RETURN NOT PRESENT FOR THIS ACCOUNT" in capital letters. The transcript URL shows sa.www4.irs.gov at the bottom. Starting to get really worried since it's been over a month and the IRS doesn't seem to have any record of my return. Anyone know what this means? Has anyone else had this problem after identity verification?

The IRS transcript clearly shows your return hasn't entered their processing system yet. The "RETURN NOT PRESENT FOR THIS ACCOUNT" message and empty fields throughout the transcript confirm this - notice how key fields like Adjusted Gross Income, Taxable Income, and Tax Per Return are completely blank rather than showing zeros or actual amounts. While your filing status appears as "Single" and the system acknowledges your identity (showing your name as KARL KELL), the $0.00 account balance, $0.00 accrued interest, and $0.00 accrued penalties as of March 6, 2023 are default values - not actual processed results. The "No tax return filed" under transactions further confirms your return is still in the pre-processing queue. This status is likely due to the gap between your January 30th filing and recent identity verification. When the IRS requires ID verification, they essentially pause processing until that step is completed. Now that you've verified your identity, you should expect to see transcript updates within 2-3 weeks. During this waiting period, these blank fields and "not present" messages are normal and don't indicate any problems with your return - just that it's waiting to be processed.

Hey guys instead of trying to decode these transcripts like some detective novel, just use taxr.ai - it's seriously the best $1 I've ever spent. It analyzed my transcript and told me exactly what was happening and when I'd get paid. https://taxr.ai
