2023 Tax Return Filed Last Week Shows "Return Not Present" on IRS Transcript - Normal Wait Time or Cause for Concern?
I filed my 2023 taxes last week and when I check my transcript for the tax period ending Dec. 31, 2023, everything shows zeros and says "RETURN NOT PRESENT FOR THIS ACCOUNT." I'm looking at my Account Transcript right now and it's really concerning me. The transcript shows: FORM NUMBER: 1040 TAX PERIOD: Dec. 31, 2023 ANY MINUS SIGN SHOWN BELOW SIGNIFIES A CREDIT AMOUNT ACCOUNT BALANCE: 0.00 ACCRUED INTEREST: 0.00 AS OF: Oct. 28, 2024 ACCRUED PENALTY: 0.00 AS OF: Oct. 28, 2024 ACCOUNT BALANCE PLUS ACCRUALS (this is not a payoff amount): 0.00 Under "INFORMATION FROM THE RETURN OR AS ADJUSTED" it shows: EXEMPTIONS: 00 FILING STATUS: Head of Household ADJUSTED GROSS INCOME: [blank] TAXABLE INCOME: [blank] TAX PER RETURN: [blank] SE TAXABLE INCOME TAXPAYER: [blank] SE TAXABLE INCOME SPOUSE: [blank] TOTAL SELF EMPLOYMENT TAX: [blank] And in big letters it says "RETURN NOT PRESENT FOR THIS ACCOUNT" Then under TRANSACTIONS, it simply says "No tax return filed" At the bottom it states "This Product Contains Sensitive Taxpayer Data" I checked my Request Date and Response Date on the transcript, and there's also a Tracking Number. I definitely submitted my return last week through the IRS website. Is this normal right after filing, or should I be worried? Does it take time for the transcript to update? I'm really concerned because the transcript is explicitly stating that no return was filed, despite me submitting it. What should I do next?

The transcript details confirm this is a normal status for a recently submitted tax return. The key indicators are: 1. All zero values ($0.00) showing for: - Account balance - Accrued interest (projected to Oct. 28, 2024) - Accrued penalties - Exemptions (showing "00") 2. Blank fields for critical tax information: - Adjusted gross income - Taxable income - Tax per return - Self-employment tax The "RETURN NOT PRESENT FOR THIS ACCOUNT" message and "No tax return filed" transaction status are standard placeholders during the initial processing period. The IRS typically takes 2-3 weeks to process newly filed returns and update their transcript system. The only populated field is your filing status (Head of Household), which is likely pulled from your previous year's data. Continue monitoring your transcript weekly - you'll see these fields populate with your actual 2023 tax information once the IRS begins processing your return. The Oct. 28, 2024 projection date for interest and penalties is standard and doesn't indicate any issues with your filing.

•Most returns start showing data within 21 days, but processing times vary based on many factors

Hey instead of checking constantly and stressing, you should try taxr.ai - its only $1 and it analyzes your transcript way better than trying to piece everything together yourself. https://taxr.ai
