IRS Action Required Status on Where's My Refund - Letter Requesting Info Not Received Yet - Will Delay Affect My 2024 Refund?

Just got a notice from the IRS saying they need additional info from me. I haven't returned anything yet. The "Action Required" notice came in last week and I've been stressing about delays. I checked the IRS "Where's My Refund" website and it says "Action Required" and "Please read the following information related to your tax situation, You may need to provide additional information to receive your full refund." It specifically states "We received your return and sent you a letter requesting more information. Please respond by following the instructions in the letter. If you don't respond, your refund amount could be changed. It may take 2-3 weeks for you to receive the letter." The site also shows my filing status as "Head of household" for tax year 2024. There's also a reference to "Tax Topic 152. Refund Information" in the helpful information section. I'm really confused because it says they sent me a letter, but then says it may take 2-3 weeks to receive it? I filed using TurboTax Online and was counting on this refund to pay some urgent bills. Anyone know how much this might slow down my refund now? Will I have to wait another 2-3 weeks just to get their letter, and then how much longer after I respond? Really need this money for some bills coming up next month. Has anyone else gotten this "Action Required" status on the Where's My Refund tool? How long did the whole process take?

IRS tax specialist here. Not responding to a CP12 notice can definitely delay your refund. The notice usually means they adjusted your return and need you to verify some information. Best to respond ASAP to avoid further delays.

how long do you think the delay will be if i send it back tomorrow?

Usually takes 6-8 weeks after they receive your response, but could be faster depending on workload

Hey there! I was in the same boat last month. I found this tool called taxr.ai that helped me understand exactly what was going on with my transcript and when I could expect my refund. It costs $1 but saved me hours of stress. Check it out: https://taxr.ai

Don't panic! I went through this exact same situation last year. The "Action Required" status usually means they need to verify some information on your return - could be income verification, dependent info, or even just a simple math error they caught. The good news is that once you respond, they typically process it within 4-6 weeks. Since you filed Head of Household, they might be verifying your qualifying person or address. Check your IRS online account too - sometimes the letter details show up there before the physical letter arrives. And definitely respond as soon as you get it, even if it's just acknowledging receipt while you gather documents. The delay sucks but it's better than having them adjust your refund without your input!
