IRS 'Where's My Refund' shows 'Action Required' for 2024 joint filing - letter coming in 2-3 weeks regarding Tax Topic 152

Filed our taxes back in April and was expecting a pretty quick refund like normal. I checked Where's My Refund today and suddenly there's this message saying 'Action Required' and that they need more information. The full message from the IRS website states: "Results Tax year 2024 ! Action Required Please read the following information related to your tax situation. You may need to provide additional information to receive your full refund. We received your return and sent you a letter requesting more information. Please respond by following the instructions in the letter. If you don't respond, your refund amount could be changed. It may take 2-3 weeks for you to receive the letter. Helpful Information Please read the following information related to your tax situation: Tax Topic 152, Refund Information Your personal tax information Tax Year 2024 Filing Status Married and filing jointly" The message says they sent me a letter but I haven't received anything in the mail yet. It clearly states that my refund could be changed if I don't respond to this letter I don't even have yet! We've never had this happen before in all our years of filing. According to the website, they'll send a letter with instructions in 2-3 weeks. As you can see, we filed married jointly for tax year 2024. The status specifically mentions Tax Topic 152, which I looked up briefly but it just seems to be general information about refunds. Nothing specific about what information they actually need from us. Has anyone dealt with this "Action Required" status before and know what kind of information they might typically request? Should I be worried? Is there anything I can do besides just wait for this mysterious letter to arrive?

This is actually fairly common. The 'Action Required' message with Tax Topic 152 means the IRS needs to verify some information on your return. It could be for many reasons: - Identity verification (most common) - Income verification - Dependent verification - Credit eligibility verification - Missing information or forms The key is to wait for the letter - it will specifically tell you what they need and how to respond. Don't try calling until you have the letter because agents won't have specific information about your case yet. In most cases, it's not a full audit but just verification of specific items. When you get the letter, respond exactly as instructed with all requested documentation. If you do that promptly, you'll likely get your refund, though possibly adjusted. I went through this last year and used taxr.ai to help me understand exactly what was happening with my transcript. It saved me hours of research and helped me respond correctly to the IRS request.

Thanks for the detailed response! Do you know roughly how long it takes to resolve once I get the letter and respond?

0 coins

It varies, but typically 6-8 weeks after you respond. However, I've seen cases resolve in as little as 3 weeks if everything is straightforward. Make sure to keep copies of EVERYTHING you send them!

What's this taxr.ai thing you mentioned? I'm currently dealing with a similar situation and honestly the IRS website is so confusing.

0 coins

It's this tool that breaks down your transcript into plain english and explains what's happening with your return. Saved me from having to decipher all the weird IRS codes and jargon myself. Check it out at https://taxr.ai

Just tried it and WOW - this is amazing! I finally understand what's happening with my refund. Why doesn't the IRS just explain things this clearly?? Thanks for recommending this!

I was in the same boat last year and was totally lost trying to figure out what was happening with my return. After hours of frustration looking at my transcript and trying to understand all the codes, I found this tool called taxr.ai that completely changed the game. It analyzed my transcript and explained everything in plain English - told me exactly what was happening, why there was a delay, and what I needed to do. So much better than trying to play detective with cryptic IRS codes! Check it out at https://taxr.ai - it's insanely good! I use it every week during tax season.

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

0 coins

It does a lot more than just read the transcript. It interprets all the codes, explains what they mean specifically for your situation, shows you a timeline of what's happened AND predicts what will happen next. It even explains any notices or letters you receive. Honestly a game changer - I recommend it to everyone now.

HOLY CRAP I JUST TRIED THIS AND IT'S AMAZING. I've been stressing for weeks about my refund and this explained EVERYTHING in 2 minutes. Everyone dealing with tax issues needs to know about this tool!!!

0 coins

ugh another software thing that probably costs a fortune 🙄

0 coins

It's actually worth every penny considering how much time and stress it saves. I was skeptical too, but after spending hours on hold with the IRS and getting nowhere, this was a lifesaver.

After two months of getting nowhere with my similar situation, I finally managed to speak with a real IRS agent by using the Claimyr calling app (claimyr.com). Got a call back within a couple hours and the agent explained exactly what was happening with my return and what I needed to do. Talking to an actual person solved my issue in one day when I'd been stuck for weeks. Best decision I made during this whole tax nightmare.

this real or just spam? feels like everyone keeps mentioning this app

0 coins

100% real. I was skeptical too but after spending literally days trying to get through on the normal IRS line, I was desperate. It works by holding your place in line and then connecting you when an agent is available. Saved my sanity.

0 coins

Do they charge for this? Seems fishy that you'd have to pay to talk to the IRS...

0 coins

Yes there is a fee, but honestly it was worth every penny considering I got my $4,300 refund released after one call. Think about how much your time is worth - I wasted like 8 hours on hold before trying this.

0 coins

Can confirm this works. Used it last week after trying for days to reach someone. Got a call back in about 2 hours which is nothing compared to the endless busy signals I was getting.

0 coins

thanks just bookmarked this. been trying to talk to someone at the irs for 3 weeks now 😭

0 coins

i had this exact same thing happen this year. turns out they just needed to verify my identity because we claimed a larger education credit than last year. entire thing took about 6 weeks from the time i got the letter to when we got our refund. dont stress too much.

0 coins

the IRS is so freaking broken. they make u wait for a letter telling u what's wrong insted of just putting the info on the website. then u wait weeks, call their stupid number, sit on hold forever just to talk to someone who barley knows more than u do. THEN they tell u to fax stuff like its 1997 or some shit. ugh just thinking about it makes me mad again

0 coins

Omg the faxing!!! I had to go to a UPS store and pay $12 to fax 5 pages to them last year. IN 2022. ridiculous 🤦‍♀️

0 coins

literally a gov agency living in the stone age. and then they wonder why people get so frustrated with them

0 coins

Don't forget how they send notices with a deadline but mail it so late you only have a few days to respond 🤡

0 coins

It's most likely identity verification. I had the same issue and they just wanted me to verify my identity through ID.me or by calling a specific number. Pretty simple once I got the letter, but it delayed my refund by about 5 weeks total.

0 coins

Do NOT ignore this. My sister got the same message last year, didnt respond to the letter in time and they adjusted her refund down by $2,800. They questioned one of her credits and because she didnt provide proof in time they just removed it. Respond AS SOON as you get the letter.

0 coins

Yikes that's scary! Did she ever manage to get it fixed after the fact?

0 coins

Yeah but it took her filing an amended return and waiting another 4 months. Such a headache. Just stay on top of it and you'll be fine.

0 coins

Something similar happened to me a while back. Check if your refund amount shown on Where's My Refund is the same as what you calculated when you filed. If it's different, they probably made an adjustment and are sending a letter explaining why.

0 coins

The IRS is just playing games to hold onto your money longer 🙄 They did this to me and the letter arrived 3 weeks later asking for documents I'd already submitted with my return. Total waste of time.

0 coins

This ☝️ They're looking for any excuse to delay refunds. Interest rates are high right now so they benefit from holding our money as long as possible.

0 coins

Thats not how it works. The IRS actually pays you interest if they take too long to issue your refund.

0 coins

At like 3% when inflation is way higher. They're still winning.

0 coins

I'm a former IRS employee. This happens when something on your return triggered a verification check. Most common causes: 1. Claiming credits you didn't claim in previous years 2. Big change in income 3. Identity theft prevention measures 4. Missing documentation 5. Math errors they caught Just wait for the letter and follow the instructions exactly. Don't send more info than asked for. Keep copies of everything.

0 coins

Thanks for the insight! We did have a pretty significant income increase this year, so maybe that's it.

0 coins

Is there any way to find out what's going on before the letter arrives? I'm in a similar situation and getting anxious.

0 coins

You can try pulling your tax transcript from irs.gov which might show some transaction codes that hint at the issue. But honestly, it's hard to interpret unless you know what to look for. Best to wait for the letter in most cases.

0 coins

I HATE how the irs sends letters telling you to call them but then makes it IMPOSSIBLE to actually reach anyone. Like why even bother?

0 coins

Pro tip: call right when they open at 7am Eastern time. I got through in 15 minutes doing that.

0 coins

I tried calling at 7am sharp and still waited 1.5 hours lol. It's all luck

0 coins

I spent 3 days trying before I finally used that Claimyr service (claimyr.com). At least I got to talk to someone and get my issue resolved. I was desperate at that point.

0 coins

I was pulling my hair out trying to figure out what was going on with my tax transcript when I got a similar message. All the transaction codes might as well have been written in another language! I tried calling but gave up after an hour on hold. Taxr.ai saved me - it explained everything in simple terms and even told me what to expect next. Cannot recommend it enough! https://taxr.ai

0 coins

Did you need to give them all your personal info? Not crazy about sharing my tax stuff with random websites...

0 coins

You upload your transcript that you download from the IRS website. It's actually really secure - they explain their privacy policies clearly on the site.

0 coins

Hmm might give it a try then. These transcript codes are driving me insane.

0 coins

This happened to us this year too. Turned out we made a tiny error on our return - we typed one digit wrong on a 1099 form. The letter arrived about 2 weeks after that message appeared, and we just had to send a copy of the correct form. Refund came about 3 weeks after we responded.

0 coins

Since this is your first time seeing this, just a heads up that these verification requests are becoming way more common. The IRS has increased security measures due to all the identity theft and fraud, especially with credits like the Child Tax Credit and Earned Income Credit. So even if you've filed the same way for years, you might suddenly get flagged for verification.

0 coins

Yes! I file the same way every year and suddenly got flagged for the first time ever. Seems like they're being extra cautious now.

0 coins

When you get the letter DO NOT IGNORE IT even if you think it's wrong. I thought they made a mistake last year and ignored it. Ended up with my refund being adjusted down by over $1000 and had to file an appeal which took 9 months to resolve. Just. Respond. To. The. Letter.

0 coins

I actually kind of panicked when this happened to me and ended up calling the IRS like 20 times before getting through. Total waste of time because they just told me to wait for the letter. When it finally came it was super simple - just needed to verify my identity online. took 5 minutes. wish I hadnt stressed so much!

0 coins

That's reassuring! Hopefully it's something simple like that for us too.

0 coins

get ready for a LOOOONG wait. had this happen in march, sent the requested docs in april, and still waiting in june. the irs is so backlogged its insane.

0 coins

Facts. They're like 8 million returns behind according to the news.

0 coins

If you need to get through to them fast, try Claimyr. I was in the same position and finally got my refund released after talking to an agent. claimyr.com saved me weeks of waiting.

0 coins

If you really need your refund quickly and can't wait, there's a Taxpayer Advocate Service that can help in hardship cases. You'll need to prove financial hardship though (like potential eviction, utility shutoff, can't afford medications, etc).

0 coins

Good luck with that, TAS is so backed up they're not taking new cases in many areas unless it's super extreme 😒

0 coins

Mine was because I claimed the Recovery Rebate Credit. They just needed me to prove I didn't receive the stimulus payment. Check if you claimed any special credits this year that might need verification.

0 coins

I went through this exact same situation last year! The "Action Required" status with Tax Topic 152 is actually pretty routine - it usually means they need to verify something on your return before processing your refund. In my case, it was because we had a significant change in our income compared to the previous year, which triggered their automated review system. The waiting for the letter is definitely the most frustrating part, but once you get it, the instructions are usually pretty straightforward. Mine took about 10 days to arrive (not the full 2-3 weeks they estimated), and they just needed copies of our W-2s and a signed statement confirming our filing status. One thing that really helped me was pulling my tax transcript from the IRS website to see if there were any transaction codes that might give a hint about what they're looking for. The codes can be confusing, but sometimes you can piece together what triggered the review. Don't stress too much about it - in most cases, as long as you respond promptly with the requested documentation, you'll get your full refund. It just adds a few extra weeks to the process. The key is to respond exactly as they ask and keep copies of everything you send them.

0 coins

Thanks for sharing your experience! That's really helpful to know it might arrive sooner than the 2-3 weeks they estimate. We did have a pretty big income change this year too (got a new job with higher pay), so that's probably what triggered it. I'm going to try pulling our transcript like you suggested to see if I can figure out what they're looking at. Really appreciate the reassurance that it's usually straightforward once you get the letter!
