Filed 3/10, accepted same day, no DDD yet - husband has child support arrears in Alabama

For those jumping to conclusions, we're only about a month behind on child support payments for 2025. In Alabama, child support continues until the child is 21 (or 25 if in college). We get behind occasionally but always catch up. I'm not trying to avoid paying - if I was, I would've filed separately with injured spouse form. We just had some financial setbacks this year. Filed through direct deposit bank on March 10th Accepted March 10th Still no direct deposit date My husband owes back child support (happens every year, his son is turning 19 soon, has a full-time job making close to what his dad makes, still lives with mom). I don't mind the support being taken out - I just wish we could make regular payments instead of this annual lump sum. Santa Barbara Tax Products Group is handling it and transcripts show "received" status. Where's My Refund just says received too. Any idea when we might see movement?

Dmitry Petrov

Tax professional here. When child support arrears are involved, your refund is subject to the Treasury Offset Program (TOP). The process typically works like this: 1. IRS approves your refund 2. Before sending it to you, they check with other federal agencies for any debts 3. Child support arrears are prioritized first 4. After the offset, any remaining refund is released to you This process usually adds 1-3 weeks to your timeline. Since you filed on 3/10 and it's been accepted, I'd expect your transcript to update within the next week showing the offset and any remaining refund amount. You should also receive a notice (CP504) explaining the offset. For future reference, you might want to adjust your W-4 withholding to avoid a large refund that gets intercepted. Making smaller regular payments toward the child support would give you more control over your finances throughout the year.

Thanks for the detailed response! We adjusted our withholding last year but had some unexpected deductions. Do you know if the entire refund can be taken or is there a limit?

For child support arrears, they can take the ENTIRE refund - no limits. This includes both spouses' portions when filing jointly (unlike other types of debt where Injured Spouse could help). The only exception is if there's an existing payment arrangement with the state child support agency.

this is 100% correct. just to add - you'll get a letter from TOP explaining where the $$ went. Most states have an online portal where you can see if they received it too.

I was in a similar situation last year but couldn't make sense of my transcript or the IRS notices. I found this tool called taxr.ai that actually explained everything - showed me exactly how much was being offset and when I'd get the remainder (if any). It saved me hours of frustration trying to decode all those cryptic transcript codes and numbers. Honestly, it was way better than getting vague answers from random people online who are just guessing. The tool gave me a clear timeline and explanation of exactly what was happening with my refund. https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It's basically an AI that analyzes your IRS transcript and explains everything in plain english. It shows you all pending actions, tells you what each code means for YOUR situation (not just generic explanations), and gives you a timeline of what to expect next. It caught things I wouldn't have noticed myself!

OMG I finally tried taxr.ai and it's literally the best thing ever 🙌 I've been stressing for weeks about my refund but this actually explained everything crystal clear. Shows exactly what's happening with my return and when I'll get my $$$. Best tool I've found this tax season by FAR!

After dealing with the SAME situation for years, I finally found a way to actually reach someone at the IRS to help track everything. Used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an actual human being at the IRS without waiting for hours. The agent checked my account and confirmed exactly how much was being offset and when I'd get the remainder. Talking to a real person made all the difference - they released my remaining portion immediately! Best money I've spent all year to finally end the guessing game.

this sounds too good to be true tbh...the IRS never answers. did it actually work?

100% worked for me. It basically navigates the phone tree for you and holds your place in line, then calls you when an agent is about to pick up. I was skeptical too but was desperate after trying for 2 weeks to get through. Got connected within an hour.

how much does something like this cost? irs should be answering their d@mn phones without us having to pay extra 😤

Worth every penny considering I got my $3900 refund released that same day instead of waiting who knows how long. Think about how much your time is worth sitting on hold for 3+ hours (if you even get through).

idk why everyone is so nice about this. Your husband is not paying his CHILD SUPPORT. that's literally money for HIS CHILD. And your upset that the government is taking the refund that u filed JOINTLY with him?? make it make sense 🤦‍♀️

Did you even read my post? We're only a month behind, his son is 19 making full time money, and I SPECIFICALLY SAID I'm glad we can help and I don't mind paying. I just wish we could pay more consistently rather than one big chunk.

Sorry, I jumped the gun. Still think child support payments should be priority #1 but I get what your saying about consistency being better.

Happens to me EVERY year. Watch your transcript for code 898 - that's the offset happening. Then you'll see any remaining amount (if there is one) post about 7-10 days later. They'll send a letter explaining the offset amount but it usually arrives after everything's already done.

Same situation here five years running. I file married filing separately now with injured spouse form. Get to keep my portion and his goes to arrears. Much faster for me to get my part this way than waiting for the offset process when filing jointly. Might be too late for this year but consider it next year?

-

Sofia Gutierrez

Thanks for the suggestion! I've thought about that but was worried it would look like we're trying to avoid paying. How has your experience been with that approach?

Works perfectly! You file Form 8379 (Injured Spouse) with your return. The IRS will still take his portion for the child support, but your portion comes to you. Usually get mine in 3-4 weeks while his part goes to arrears. Nothing shady about it - this is literally what the form is for!

thisis what my tax lady recommended to me too. Ended up getting my part wayyyy faster than when we filed joint.

you should just file separately. why let them take ur money too??

-

Sofia Gutierrez

We've looked into that but with our income levels and deductions, filing jointly actually saves us money overall even with the offset.

Check your bank account statement carefully. Sometimes the offset happens but the notification in the IRS system lags behind. I had this happen where I was checking WMR daily but the money had already been taken and sent to child support enforcement - it just didn't update online for almost 2 weeks.

you could call the Treasury Offset Program directly at 800-304-3107 and use the automated system to see if/when the offset is scheduled or has happened. You'll need your SSN but it will tell you amount and recipient agency.

Forget calling the IRS - it's impossible. I spent TWO WHOLE DAYS trying last year with the same issue. What finally worked was going to the state child support agency website - they actually showed when they received the offset payment before the IRS even updated anything on their end.

i use that taxr.ai tool someone else mentioned and its life changing... spits out a clear explanation of exactly whats happening with your refund. it's way better than the cryptic WMR garbage or vague transcript codes. for offset situations it even explains how much is being taken and estimates when you'll get anything left over. https://taxr.ai saved me countless hours of stress

After WEEKS of IRS runaround, I finally got through to a human thanks to Claimyr. I was able to confirm my offset amount, when it was processed, and get an actual timeframe for my remaining refund. They actually helped expedite my remaining portion because I was experiencing financial hardship. claimyr.com literally saved my sanity and my bank account!

Yes!! I was skeptical too but I was desperate after trying for days to get through. The service navigates all the phone menus, waits on hold for you, then calls your phone when an agent is about to pick up. Got my issue resolved in one call instead of endless busy signals and hangups.

Here's what ACTUALLY happens with child support offsets (from someone who deals with this every year): 1. IRS approves your refund 2. It gets flagged for offset before hitting your account 3. Bureau of Fiscal Service (not IRS!) handles the offset 4. They send the appropriate amount to state child support agency 5. Any remainder goes to your bank as a separate transaction This whole process adds about 2-3 weeks to your refund time. Check code 898 on transcripts to see when offset happens. The state child support agency usually gets the $ before you get any update from IRS.

0 coins

-

Chloe Taylor

yep exactly... and if u have 898 on your transcript the offset has already happened. look for cycle codes after that - that'll be for any refund you'll actually get.

Also the remaining amount sometimes shows as code 846 (refund issued) with a date about 1-2 weeks after the 898 code date.

Hate to be that person but your finances are none of our business. The question is about your refund status. If you find out how to track when your offset has been processed, check out the Treasury Offset Program. They can tell you if/when payment was sent to child support enforcement in your state.

I created a dang reddit account just to comment on this! I was in the EXACT same boat for 8 years. Best advice - call the actual state child support agency directly. They can tell you when they receive the payment from IRS which is usually way faster than waiting for IRS updates. In my experience, once the offset happens, any remainder shows up about 7-10 days later.

WMR and transcripts are useless for offset situations. I couldn't make sense of all the codes and dates either, but taxr.ai explained everything perfectly. It reads all the transcript codes and tells you exactly what's happening with your refund in simple terms. Showed me exactly how much was going to child support and when I'd get the rest. Best tool I've found all tax season! https://taxr.ai

File injured spouse next time...problem solved 🤷‍♂️

0 coins

-

Not always that simple. Injured spouse can actually complicate things and delay processing by 11-14 weeks. Sometimes faster to just take the offset depending on your financial situation.

When I needed to talk to a human at the IRS about my offset, I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got through in about 45 minutes. The IRS rep confirmed exactly what was happening with my refund and gave me the exact date my remaining portion would be deposited. Worth every penny after spending DAYS trying to get through the normal phone line. They had me talking to an actual IRS agent who could see my account and help resolve everything.
