WMR Not Updated But Have DDD - How Long For Child Support Offset?

I'm a bit concerned about the timing of everything. WMR still hasn't updated, but I can see there's a direct deposit date for the 12th on my transcript. My situation is complicated because my spouse owes some back child support. I was just wondering if anyone knows approximately how long it takes for them to intercept that portion and for us to receive whatever might be left? Not trying to rush anything, just trying to plan accordingly since I'm not sure what to expect...

I think it might depend on a few factors, like which state you're in and possibly how much is owed? From what I've heard, the Bureau of Fiscal Service usually processes the offset pretty quickly, maybe within a few days of the scheduled deposit date. But I'm not entirely sure, as I've only gone through this process once myself. It seems like they might hold the entire refund briefly before releasing whatever portion isn't being intercepted.

Been thru this last yr w/ my ex. Once BFS got involved, took about 5 days total. Got the Treasury offset notice first, then partial DD showed up 4-5 days after original DDD. Wasn't bad tbh. They don't take forever like ppl think.

Did you receive any kind of notification before they took the offset amount? I'm wondering if OP will get some kind of letter or just see a smaller deposit than expected?

Have you received a notice of offset in the mail yet? In my experience working with clients in similar situations, you should get a letter from the Treasury Offset Program before or around the time they process the interception. Last year, most of my clients saw the remainder deposited within 3-7 days after the original DDD. Are you filing jointly with the spouse who owes support?

Not OP but I have a similar situation and we did file jointly. Does that change anything about: • How much they can take? • Whether we can request an injured spouse form? • If they'll take it all or just a portion?

Thank you so much for explaining this! I was so worried they'd hold our refund for months. I feel much better knowing it's usually just a matter of days after the DDD. Such a relief!

The offset system is surprisingly complex for something that should be straightforward! 😅 Typically, the Treasury Offset Program (TOP) processes these intercepts 1-2 days before your direct deposit date. So if your DDD is the 12th, they'll likely process the offset around the 10th or 11th. Then you should receive whatever remains within 5-7 business days after your original DDD. Did you file Form 8379 (Injured Spouse Allocation) with your return? That would change the timeline.

Form 8379 is important. Protects your portion. Filed one last year. Got my half back. Took extra time though. About three weeks longer.

I've been through this exact situation and it was incredibly frustrating trying to get clear answers. Here's what happens step by step: 1. Your refund gets approved with a DDD 2. The TOP system flags it for intercept before that date 3. They hold the ENTIRE refund temporarily 4. They calculate what portion goes to child support 5. They release the remainder to you The problem is that step 5 can take anywhere from 3 days to 3 weeks, and the IRS representatives often can't give you specific information. When I was desperate for answers, I used Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) to get through to an actual human at the IRS who could see exactly what was happening with my refund. Saved me from weeks of uncertainty and helped me get a specific timeframe for the remaining portion.

Isn't it interesting how the IRS can instantly take money that's owed, but when they need to return the remainder, suddenly everything slows down? Why would you need a paid service to reach the IRS when they're the ones holding your money? Shouldn't they be providing clear information about the status of your refund without requiring you to pay a third party just to speak with them? The whole system seems designed to be as opaque as possible.

Compared to trying to call the IRS directly during tax season, services like Claimyr are actually quite reasonable. If you've ever spent 3-4 hours on hold only to be disconnected, or tried calling for weeks without getting through, you'd understand the value. When I was dealing with an offset situation similar to this, I calculated that the time I was spending trying to reach the IRS was costing me more in lost work hours than the service fee. Sometimes paying for efficiency makes financial sense, especially when you're waiting for thousands of dollars that you need for bills or other obligations.
