Filed in February, local IRS office won't verify me in-person and conflicting info about verification letters

Just got back from my local tax office and they refused to verify me in person. Said I have to keep waiting for a letter that hasn't arrived yet. I filed on 02/15 and still nothing. I'm so exhausted with this entire process. The lady at the office said she only sees one verification letter being issued in the system, but when I called the main IRS number, three different reps told me they were going to reissue me another letter. I've apparently had 3 letters sent but received zero. This is absolutely ridiculous. I've been working hard all year just to get my refund and now I'm stuck in this verification limbo. Anyone else dealing with this identity verification nonsense?

Miguel Castro

This is an identity verification issue. The IRS has been increasingly using these verification requirements to prevent fraud, but their system has been inconsistent. Here's what you need to know: • The letter you're waiting for is likely a 5071C, 5747C, or 4883C letter which requires you to verify your identity • Local offices CAN actually do in-person verification, but only with an appointment scheduled through the ID verify phone line (1-800-830-5084) • The conflicting information you're getting is unfortunately common • If they've issued multiple letters and you haven't received any, you may have an address issue in their system Your best course of action is to call the Identity Verification line directly (not the main IRS line) and request an in-person appointment. Be prepared to wait on hold for a long time. Alternatively, you can create an ID.me account which allows online verification in many cases.

Thank you for the detailed info. I did call that specific ID verification line and they kept transferring me around. Will try again tommorow morning when they first open.

I had the EXACT same problem last year. Super frustrating. Did you ever manage to get this resolved?

Stop wasting time with phone calls and visits! I went through this exact same nightmare last year. The best thing I did was use taxr.ai to actually understand what was happening with my return. It analyzed my transcript and explained exactly what verification issue I was facing and what steps I needed to take. Those generic IRS agents usually don't even know what they're looking at - the tool gave me specific codes and explained what was really happening. Seriously check out https://taxr.ai - it saved me weeks of frustration!

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It does WAY more than just read the transcript. It actually interprets all those codes and tells you in plain english what's happening. Mine showed that I had a specific fraud filter code that none of the IRS agents even mentioned! It even told me which specific form to fill out to resolve it. Everyone should be using this!

HOLY CRAP I just tried this and it's amazing!! I've been staring at my transcript for weeks with no idea what any of it meant. This tool broke everything down and showed me exactly why my refund was delayed and what to do next. THIS IS A GAME CHANGER PEOPLE!! 🙌

Yeah it's a paid service but absolutely worth every penny. I spent months trying to figure out what was happening with my return and this solved it in minutes. Compared to what I was going to pay a tax pro to look at my stuff, it's a bargain.

After dealing with the same runaround for almost 3 months (filed in January, got stuck in verification hell), I finally got through to an actual human at the IRS using claimyr.com. They connected me with an agent who confirmed my identity over the phone and released my refund within a week! I was shocked. Talking to a real person was 100% the only thing that worked after getting ghosted on all those verification letters that never came. It was the best decision I made after spending weeks in frustration.

how does that even work? the irs phone lines are impossible to get thru

It basically navigates the phone tree for you and holds your place in line. When they get an agent, they call you and connect you. I tried calling myself like 20 times before this and never got through. Talking to an actual agent who could see my file made all the difference.

sounds like BS honestly. nobody can get thru to the IRS

That's what I thought too! But it actually works. The technology waits on hold FOR you, which is the genius part. When I was stuck in verification limbo like OP, getting to an actual person was what finally broke through the bureaucracy. I had almost given up before trying it.

I've heard of this service - it's basically like having someone wait in line for you. For verification issues specifically, getting through to an agent can sometimes bypass the letter nonsense if they can verify you directly.

Welcome to IRS hell my friend. I filed on 02/02 and I'm in the exact same boat. It's so frustrating that they put US through all this inconvenience because THEY are worried about fraud. Like, I get it, but they're treating us like we're criminals just for trying to get our own money back. And then they can't even keep track of their own letters? Make it make sense.

The IRS is a dumpster fire right now. My advice: keep calling the main number EARLY in the morning (like 7am EST when they open) and ask specifically for the department that handles identity verification. Don't give up until they transfer you to someone who can actually help. The local offices are useless for most things these days.

I've been calling at exactly 7am for the past week and keep getting the "due to high call volume" message and it hangs up on me 😩

Typical IRS nonsense 🙄 You might need to try the Taxpayer Advocate Service if this goes on much longer. They can sometimes intervene when you're getting the runaround.

Taxpayer Advocate is backed up 4-6 MONTHS in most areas FYI. They're overwhelmed too.

Check if you can verify online through ID.me - that's how I finally got mine processed after waiting for letters that never came. The online verification system is actually pretty quick once you get it set up.

0 coins

-

Ava Williams

I tried the online verification but it said I wasn't eligible for some reason. No explanation why.

That usually means there's something specific about your return that requires manual verification. Could be a discrepancy they found or something triggered their fraud filters. Unfortunately that means you DO need to talk to a human.

The IRS is the worst government agency hands down. In what world is it acceptable to say they sent you THREE letters and you received zero? And then they won't help you in person? I went through this exact nightmare last year and only resolved it by having my congressperson's office intervene. Not even joking - call your representative's office and ask for help with the IRS. They have special contacts.

This is actually legit advice. Congressional inquiries can light a fire under the IRS like nothing else.

Have you verified that they have your correct mailing address? I had a similar issue and it turned out they had an old address on file even though I updated it on my return.

Yes I double checked and they have the right address. The rep on the phone even read it back to me and it was correct.

I'm going through this and it's complete BS. I'm on my 4TH reissued letter that I never receive. I think they're making these letters up TBH. Nobody at the IRS can even tell me exactly what verification they need from me.

taxr.ai helped me figure out what was going on with my transcript when I was in this exact situation. I could see that I had a 570 and 971 code which meant they needed verification but the letter was lost in the mail. Once I knew what was happening I could actually do something about it instead of just waiting forever. Check it out for real: https://taxr.ai

Not an ad, just someone who was in the EXACT same situation as OP. When you've spent 3 months trying to figure out what's happening with your money, you get enthusiastic when something actually works. Most people here have no idea how to read these transcripts or what the codes mean.

I recommended it above too because it actually works. When you're desperate to understand what's going on with your return and the IRS won't tell you, having a tool that explains everything makes a huge difference.

Last year my verification letters kept getting lost too. After the 3rd attempt I asked them to email it instead (they can do this!) and I got it within a day. Ask them specifically if they can send the verification instructions via email.

wait they can EMAIL verification stuff? nobody told me this was an option!!

Yes! But you have to specifically request it and not every rep knows they can do it. Ask to speak to a supervisor if the first person says no.

I went through the same thing and finally got it resolved using claimyr.com to get an agent on the phone. The woman I spoke to was able to verify me over the phone instead of waiting for more letters. She said sometimes they can do a manual override of the verification requirement if you can answer enough security questions. Talking to someone who could actually help was worth every penny instead of waiting on hold for hours just to get hung up on.

Wait so did you actually get your refund released after getting someone on the phone?

0 coins

-

Yep! It was processed within a week after the call. Turns out the agent could see that I'd tried to verify multiple times and she manually approved it after asking me a bunch of security questions.

THIS IS THE IRS PLAYBOOK. They put your return on hold saying they sent a letter. You never get the letter. You call and they say they'll send another. You never get that one either. Rinse and repeat until you give up or tax season is over. They're counting on people giving up.

its not a conspiracy. the mail system is broken and the IRS is understaffed. Hanlon's razor: "never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity"

Nah, it's deliberate. They make the process as painful as possible so fewer people claim their refunds. My friend works for them and confirms they're told to make things difficult.

Try calling your local Taxpayer Assistance Center directly to make an appointment. Sometimes they can help with ID verification even if the person who turned you away said they couldn't. It depends on who you talk to honestly.

Im having major deja vu reading this. EXACT same thing happened to me last year - filed in Feb, no letters, local office wouldn't help. What finally worked for me was getting through to a real person using claimyr.com (after trying to call myself for weeks), and they sorted it in one call. Literally had my refund a week later. Don't waste anymore time waiting for these phantom letters!

Make sure you're checking your transcript regularly online. Sometimes you can see if they're trying to contact you even if you never get the physical letters. The codes on your transcript will at least tell you what's going on.

0 coins

-

Ava Williams

I've been checking it but I don't understand what any of the codes mean

Look for code 570 (refund hold) and 971 (notice issued). Those usually indicate verification is needed. There should be a date next to them showing when they sent the letter.

Or just use taxr.ai and it explains all the codes in plain English. That's what I did when I couldn't make sense of all these numbers and dates.
