Can't request another identity verification letter, been waiting 3 weeks for first one. Are all verification codes the same?
I've been waiting for my identity verification letter from the IRS since September. Every agent I speak with says I need this letter to proceed with my return. I tried going on the IRS website to request another letter since the first one hasn't arrived, but I don't see that option anywhere. I already requested a second letter about 3 weeks ago through an agent. Does the system only allow you to request an additional letter once? Also, if they send multiple letters, would the verification code be the same on each one? Getting frustrated with this whole process as my refund is just sitting there waiting for me to verify my identity.

The IRS typically only allows one additional verification letter request in a short timeframe. The system will temporarily block additional requests to prevent fraud. The verification codes are usually different on each letter for security reasons - they generate a new code each time they send a letter. If it's been 3+ weeks since your last request, you have a few options: 1. Try calling the Identity Verification line directly at 800-830-5084 (not the general IRS line) 2. Make an in-person appointment at your local Taxpayer Assistance Center 3. Keep checking Get Transcript online - sometimes you can verify through there instead Also, verify your address is correct in the IRS system. Many verification letters get lost because the IRS has an outdated address.

Thank you for the detailed answer! I didn't know about the specific identity verification line. I'll try that tomorrow morning.

The appointment at the TAC center worked for me last year when I had this same issue. Took like 2 weeks to get the appt but they resolved it on the spot.

Yes, in-person appointments are often the fastest solution if you can get one. Bring multiple forms of ID!

just wanna add - if u call that identity line go super early like 7am sharp. it fills up fast and they'll just tell u to call back the next day 😑

Yep, that identity line is impossible to get through on. I called for 2 weeks straight before I finally got someone.

I went through this exact same situation last year! So frustrating. I finally got so tired of waiting that I used taxr.ai to analyze my transcript and figure out exactly what was going on. It told me precisely what verification steps I needed and gave me a custom plan for resolving it. Saved me from the endless phone tag with the IRS. Their AI is insanely good at explaining all those cryptic codes and what's happening behind the scenes with your return. I use it every month now to check on my tax stuff. https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It does WAY more than just read transcripts. It analyzes everything - identifying action items, explaining what each code means specifically for YOUR situation, and giving you a clear plan. It also tracks refund dates and explains any holds/delays. Basically turns tax gibberish into plain English lol. Saved me hours of research and stress.

That's exactly what I need! Just checked it out and HOLY CRAP where has this been all my life?? Just got my analysis and it immediately showed me why my verification was stuck. Thanks for the recommendation!!

You upload your transcript which you get from the IRS site. It's way safer than giving your info to some random tax preparer. Their system breaks everything down in ways the IRS never explains.

After waiting 2 months for my verification letter (never came), I finally found a way to talk to an actual human at the IRS. Used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that somehow gets you past all the IRS phone system nonsense. Got a call back with an agent in about 40 minutes who helped me verify over the phone instead of waiting for another letter. Best money I've ever spent to finally get someone who could actually help me. The agent ended up releasing my refund while on the call!

This sounds like an ad. Does that service actually work? IRS phone lines are notoriously impossible.

I was skeptical too but was desperate after 2 months of waiting. It actually worked - they just hold your place in the phone queue so you don't have to. Got my issue fixed in one call after months of trying the normal way.

Honestly whatever it was, it was worth it to finally get my refund. Talking to an actual agent solved in 15 minutes what I'd been trying to fix for months.

Just tried it and it actually worked 🤯 Got through to an agent after weeks of trying on my own! They're sending me a new verification letter expedited.

I had this exact same problem last year. Turns out the letters kept getting sent to my old adress even though I had updated my address with the IRS through my latest tax return. Had to call 12 times before I found an agent who knew what they were doing. They can actually verify you over the phone if you have the right person. Ask to speak with a supervisor or someone in the identity verification department specifically.

The IRS is such a broken system. I've been dealing with this for 4 MONTHS. I'm on my 3rd verification letter request and still nothing. Called over 30 times. Went to a local office but they were "not equipped" to handle identity verification 🤡 Somehow they can send me bills no problem but can't send a verification letter to the correct address.

omg 4 months?? thats insane. the government can take our money instantly but takes forever to give it back 😤

Yep! And the funniest part is they charge interest when YOU owe THEM but don't pay interest on refunds they're holding hostage 🙃

Have you tried your local congressperson? I had to do this after 5 months of no progress. Their office contacted the Taxpayer Advocate and suddenly my issue was fixed in 2 weeks.

Ok so I literally JUST went through this. The trick is to verify your identity online if possible. Go to irs.gov/identity-theft-fraud-scams/identity-verification and see if you can do it there. You'll need your last tax return info, a credit card or loan account number, and a mobile phone in your name. Worked for me when I couldn't get the letter.

I tried this but it says I'm not eligible for online verification. That's why they're sending the letter in the first place 😩

Ugh that sucks. In that case I'd definitely try calling the specific identity verification number that someone else mentioned above. The regular IRS line people can't help much with this.

pro tip: if u have informed delivery with usps, u can see when the letter is coming. mine was sent 3 times but never showed up even tho it showed in informed delivery!! turns out my mail carrier was putting it in wrong box 🤬

Anyone know if u can get the verification code by calling? Last year they were able to give me some kind of bypass code over the phone but this year the agent said they can't do that anymore.

Nathan Dell
Depends on the agent tbh. Some know how to help, others just read from their script. I got a bypass code in March by calling the dedicated identity verification line not the main IRS number.

I work at a tax prep office. This is a common issue right now. The verification letters (called Letter 5071C) are taking 3-4 weeks to arrive if they ever do. If you haven't received anything after a month, it's best to schedule an in-person appointment at your local Taxpayer Assistance Center. Bring 2 forms of ID, your tax return copy, and any IRS notices you've received. They can verify you on the spot and release your refund. And yes, each letter has a unique verification code.

This is what I ended up doing after waiting 6 weeks for my letter. The TAC appointment fixed it in 20 minutes. Just make sure you bring EVERYTHING they might need - social security card, license, passport if you have it, etc.

had the same thing happen to me. turned out the letters were being sent to my old adress from 3 years ago. i think its a huge glitch in their system cuz i've filled taxes with my new address for years. the only way i fixed it was going to the local irs office in person.

After struggling with this for weeks, I found a phone number trick. Call 800-830-5084, then immediately when the automated system starts, press 1, then 4, wait for the prompt, then 2, then 3, then 1 again. This gets you to a specific department that can help with identity verification issues faster. Might not work for everyone but it worked for me!

If you have access to your transcript through irs.gov you might see a code that indicates why they're asking for verification. Something like 570 or 420. Helped me understand what was going on when I was in your boat.

Grant Vikers
If you see code 570 it means there's a hold on your account pending review. Usually that's when they're waiting for ID verification or some other issue to be resolved.

I do see a 570 code! So that means they're just waiting for my verification?

Exactly. Once you verify, you should see a 571 code appear which means the hold was released. Then your refund should process.

OMG THIS EXACT THING HAPPENED TO ME. I waited for 2 months for that stupid letter. What finally worked was using taxr.ai to look at my transcript. It showed me there was actually a problem with my W-2 info that was causing the verification issue. Once I knew the real problem I was able to call and fix it. The IRS rarely tells you the actual issue! https://taxr.ai

It's honestly the best money I've spent all year. I was about to hire a CPA for hundreds of dollars before I found this. It's like having a tax expert AND an IRS insider explain exactly what's happening with your taxes and how to fix it. The peace of mind alone was worth it.

has anyone tried contacting the Taxpayer Advocate Service? I heard they can help with these situations if you've been waiting more than 30 days

They're overwhelmed right now. I tried that route and they said they're only taking cases with "financial hardship" - apparently waiting months for your own money doesn't count 🙄

Pretty much. They wanted documentation showing I was about to lose utilities or housing. Because apparently we should only get our refunds if we're about to be homeless 🤦♀️

just checking - are you sure youre looking at the right place on the website? go to identity verification page not the regular account page. also make sure you're not on a scam site. only use irs.gov directly.

Yeah I'm definitely on the official site. I think the issue is they only let you request it once through the site and I already did that through an agent on the phone.

Depending on what type of verification letter it is, there are different waiting periods and request limits. For a 5071C (standard identity verification), you can only request a new one every 30 days. For a 6331C (wage verification), it's every 15 days. You can find which type you need by checking your account transcript if you can access it online.

I was stuck in verification hell for nearly 4 months! Ended up using Claimyr to finally talk to an agent. It was the only way I could talk to a live agent after trying for weeks. The agent was actually able to verify me over the phone and I got my refund 8 days later. claimyr.com saved me from pulling my hair out.

Yes! Apparently some agents have the authority to do a manual verification if you can answer enough questions about your past tax returns, previous addresses, etc. The key is getting to someone in the right department who knows what they're doing.

The IRS is absolutely SWAMPED with these verification issues right now. I'm a tax preparer and about 60% of my clients are having to verify their identity this year - way more than usual. They're short-staffed and overwhelmed with the verification requests. Best bet is to go to a local office in person if possible.

Why is it happening so much this year? Is there more fraud or something?

Combination of things - tons of identity theft during the pandemic, stimulus payment fraud, plus the IRS implemented new security measures this year. The system flags WAY more returns as potentially suspicious now.

Tip from someone who finally got this resolved: if you have a tax professional who prepared your return, they might be able to call the Practitioner Priority Line on your behalf. They have access to a different phone system than we do. My accountant called and got this fixed in one day after I struggled for weeks.
