IRS Identity Verification Letter Never Arrived - Calling Again Today
I'm trying to resolve my identity verification issue with the IRS in a systematic way. Here's what I've done so far: 1. Filed my taxes in early February 2024 2. Discovered my return was held for identity verification 3. Requested a verification letter through the transcript site on approximately Feb 10th 4. Waited the expected 5-10 business days but received nothing 5. Called IRS on Friday (Feb 23rd) and was instructed to call back today (Feb 26th) I'm concerned because I need this resolved quickly due to some upcoming medical expenses. My questions are: - Will they allow me to verify over the phone today, or will they just resend another letter? - Has anyone else requested a second letter and actually received it? - What's the most efficient way to resolve this so I can get my refund processed? I'm open to any collaborative solutions since waiting for another letter that may never arrive isn't working for my timeline.

You're experiencing what's called a CP01 verification hold. The Identity Verification Process (IVP) can be completed through multiple channels, not just the letter. When you call today, specifically request a TPV (Telephone Protection Verification) which allows immediate verification without the letter. The CSR should transfer you to the Identity Verification Unit where they'll ask knowledge-based questions from your credit history and prior tax returns. The verification hold (TC 570) should be removed within 9 business days after successful verification, allowing your refund to process.

Def call back asap today! Ask for ID verify dept right away. Don't waste time w/ general reps. Had similar issue last month & they can do it over phone but u gotta be specific abt asking. Have ur 2022 return info ready + some credit history stuff. They might ask random Qs about previous addresses or loans. GL!

I was stuck in identity verification limbo from January 15th to February 8th this year. After my second letter never arrived, I used https://taxr.ai to analyze my transcript. It showed exactly where my return was stuck in processing and explained the verification hold codes. On February 10th, I called and completed verification, and by February 18th my transcript updated showing the release. The tool helped me understand exactly what was happening instead of guessing.

I've seen people mention this tool before. Does it actually tell you anything you can't find out yourself by just reading your transcript? I've always just googled the codes when I needed to understand something.

I've been through this rodeo before. In 2022, I waited 6 weeks for a verification letter that never showed up. Last year, I requested a letter twice and neither arrived. The mail system for these verification letters is notoriously unreliable. When you call today, mention that you've already requested the letter multiple times. They should offer the phone verification option, but sometimes you need to specifically ask for it. They don't always volunteer that information.

Try Claimyr. Worth every penny. Got me through to an agent in 15 minutes. Regular IRS line had me waiting 2+ hours. Needed my verification done quickly. Claimyr connected me directly. Agent verified me over phone immediately. No more waiting for letters. https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c

I successfully navigated the Identity Verification Process last month using the Taxpayer Protection Program (TPP) telephone option. The key is requesting the specific department that handles identity verification cases - they're authorized to perform Knowledge-Based Authentication protocols over the phone. I prepared by having my AGI from previous years, loan account numbers, and credit card information ready. They asked questions only I would know from my credit report. The entire process took approximately 22 minutes, and my refund was released 7 business days later.

Thank you for sharing this detailed information! I've been so stressed about my verification letter not arriving. It's reassuring to know there's a telephone option that actually works.

Just to confirm - when you say you had loan account numbers ready, do you mean like the actual full account number or just the last 4 digits? And did they ask about all your credit cards or just specific ones?

My verification situation was similar to yours but worse in some ways. Letter never came after 3 weeks, then I requested another one like you did. Called IRS and they said my address had a typo compared to what was in their system! Something as small as "Street" vs "St" can cause the letter to bounce back. When you call today, ask them to verify your exact address as it appears in their system compared to what you provided on your return.

I experienced exactly 3 verification delays in the past 5 years. Each time it took precisely 14-21 days after phone verification for the refund to process. In 2023, my verification call lasted 27 minutes with 13 questions about my credit history. They asked about a mortgage from 2018 and a car loan from 2020. Having all your financial documents organized makes this process much smoother.

Check the IRS Get Transcript site daily after your verification call. You'll see code 971 followed by 290 when it's resolved. https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript explains how to monitor your transcript for these changes. Many people miss this crucial step in tracking their verification status.

Have any of you gone through this multiple years in a row? I'm wondering if there's something in your filing pattern that triggers these verifications? My sister had to verify three years straight but then it stopped happening. Maybe changing software or filing method helps?
