Identity Verification Letter Delays - IRS Keeps Telling Me to Wait

According to the IRS.gov tracking tool, my identity verification letter was supposedly sent on March 15th. I called last week since TurboTax status showed my refund was being held pending verification. The agent confirmed the letter was sent on the 15th and told me to wait 14 days before calling back if I didn't receive it (standard USPS delivery timeframe per IRS.gov FAQ). Fast forward to today - called back and waited 20 minutes before being transferred. The agent took my information and had to schedule a callback. Got the call an hour later, verified my info, answered questions about my 2023 return, then sat on hold for another 20 minutes. Final result? They claim the letter was sent 3/15 and they've "just sent a new one." So I essentially wasted 2 hours of my workday to be told to wait another 14 days. Has anyone else experienced this cycle with verification letters? According to the r/IRS megathread, these verification issues seem particularly bad this year. Any suggestions on breaking this loop?

I had the EXACT same experience on February 22nd. Called about my missing verification letter, they said it was sent on February 8th. Told to wait 14 days. Called back on March 8th, spent 1 hour and 15 minutes on the phone, they said "we just sent a new one." Still nothing in my mailbox as of March 25th. The most frustrating part is that they won't let you verify over the phone even though they can clearly see it's you based on all the questions they ask! I ended up having to make an in-person appointment at my local IRS office on April 2nd to verify my identity because I need my refund for tuition due on April 15th.

How long did it take you to get an in-person appointment? I'm facing a deadline for my rent deposit and need my refund ASAP. Was there any specific option you selected when making the appointment?

This verification letter situation is like ordering food delivery that never arrives, but the restaurant keeps saying "it's on the way" while you starve. I've been waiting since January 28th for my letter. Called twice. Same runaround. It's almost like they're hoping we'll just give up.

I waited exactly 42 days for my verification letter last year. Called 3 times. Each time they said they'd send a new one. On day 43, I received 4 separate verification letters all at once. The system is completely broken. After verifying, it took another 21 days to get my refund.

I feel this so much. Been through the same nightmare myself. It's comforting to know I'm not alone, but also infuriating that so many of us are dealing with this broken system.

I've been through this exact verification letter cycle. Some things that might help: • Check if your transcript is available on IRS.gov - sometimes the codes there can tell you what's really happening with your return • The tool at https://taxr.ai can analyze your transcript and explain what the codes mean for your specific situation • Look for code 570 (refund hold) followed by 971 (notice issued) - classic verification pattern • Many people report letters never arriving despite IRS claims • The IRS often sends these to old addresses despite having your current one on file In my experience, they won't budge on the 14-day wait period no matter how many times you call. It's incredibly frustrating when you need your refund for school expenses.

idk about using some random website with my tax info... isn't that risky? how does it even work without giving personal details?

I believe taxr.ai actually just helps you interpret what's on your transcript, rather than requiring you to input sensitive information. You can download your transcript yourself from the IRS site, and then the tool helps explain what the various codes mean for your particular situation, which is often helpful since the IRS descriptions can be somewhat vague or technical.

Does the tool identify specific verification codes? My transcript shows a TC 971 with Action Code 121 - would taxr.ai explain what that means for my timeline?

This verification letter nonsense is the tax equivalent of purgatory 😂 You're stuck in an endless loop of "just wait 14 more days" while your money sits in IRS limbo. I've found that calling the IRS is basically a game of chance - sometimes you get someone helpful, other times you waste hours. If you're serious about breaking the cycle, try https://claimyr.com - it's a service that navigates the IRS phone tree and gets you connected to an actual agent without the hours of hold time. I was skeptical at first (another service promising miracles?), but after my third missing verification letter, I tried it and got connected to an agent who actually scheduled an in-person verification appointment for me instead of just telling me to wait for another phantom letter.

Is this just another paid service that does what we could do ourselves? The IRS phone system is terrible, but I'm hesitant to pay for something when the problem is their broken system.

I tried Claimyr after waiting exactly 37 days for my verification letter. Got connected to an agent in 18 minutes instead of the 2 hours and 12 minutes I spent on my previous call attempt. The agent scheduled me for an in-person appointment 5 days later. Verified my identity, and my refund was deposited 9 days after that. Worth every penny for me.

Does it actually work? I've spent nearly 5 hours on hold with the IRS this week alone and couldn't get through.

I've seen this pattern repeat for years now. Back in 2022, I had three clients who never received their verification letters despite the IRS claiming they were sent multiple times. The verification system has been problematic since they expanded it in response to increased fraud attempts. Your best options right now are: 1. Make an in-person appointment at your local Taxpayer Assistance Center (find it on IRS.gov) 2. If you have access to your online transcript, look for specific codes (570/971 combination often indicates verification) 3. Request a Taxpayer Advocate if you're experiencing financial hardship due to the delay In my experience, the phone representatives often don't have the authority to verify you over the phone even when they can see it's clearly you. The system is designed with security prioritized over convenience, which creates these frustrating loops.

According to Internal Revenue Manual 21.1.3.3, if you're experiencing a financial hardship due to your refund being delayed, you may qualify for assistance from the Taxpayer Advocate Service. Per IRM 13.1.7.2, a significant delay in receiving a tax refund can constitute a hardship if it impacts your ability to pay necessary living expenses. I went through this verification nightmare last year and eventually got help through TAS after my third missing letter. Be prepared to document your hardship (overdue bills, etc.) when contacting them. So relieved to find this thread and realize I wasn't alone in this experience.

How long did it take to get help through the Taxpayer Advocate? I've heard they're also backlogged by months. Did you have to provide specific documentation of your hardship?

It took approximately 3 weeks to be assigned an advocate, and another 2 weeks for them to resolve my case. I had to provide copies of overdue tuition bills and a notice from my apartment complex regarding late rent. The advocate was able to arrange an expedited verification process and get my refund released within 10 business days after verification.

Been there. Done that. Got the runaround too. Finally broke the cycle. Made an appointment at local TAC office. Brought two forms of ID. Verified in person. Refund processed 8 days later. Direct deposit arrived on day 10. Skip the phone calls. Go straight to in-person appointment. Save yourself weeks of frustration. Online appointment system works well. Most offices have slots within 1-2 weeks.

I've seen dozens of cases like this at the VITA site where I volunteer. The verification letter system has a serious flaw - the IRS computer system marks letters as "sent" when they're queued for printing, not when they actually go out. During busy periods (especially February-April), there can be a 2-3 week gap between when the system says a letter was sent and when it actually gets printed and mailed. To make matters worse, these verification letters are often generated by automated systems that don't check if previous letters were delivered. So when you call, the representative sees the letter marked as "sent" in their system, assumes you should have received it, and triggers a new one - which enters the same backlogged printing queue. We've had taxpayers receive 4-5 identical verification letters all at once in May for returns filed in February. The system is fundamentally broken.
