IRS verification letter dated 03-02-2025 claims no record of my 2024 return after identity verification - is this normal or concerning?
I filed my taxes in early February and got a letter from the IRS asking me to verify my identity last week. I verified immediately through the ID.me portal as instructed. Today I checked my transcripts and saw something confusing. I received this letter from the IRS: Internal Revenue Service United States Department of the Treasury PHILADELPHIA, PA 19255-1498 Tracking ID: 107573578924 Date of Issue: 03-04-2025 Taxpayer's Name: KYR R WILL Tax Period: December, 2024 Return: 1040_SERIES Information About the Request We Received On March 04, 2025, we received a request for verification of non-filing of a tax return. As of the date of this letter, we have no record of a processed tax return for the tax period listed above. If you have any questions, you can call 800-829-1040. I'm completely confused because the letter is dated 03-04-2025 saying they have "no record of a processed tax return" for 2024. But I definitely filed in early February and even got the verification request! The tracking ID starts with 1075 and it's addressed from Philadelphia. Has anyone seen this before? Does this mean they rejected my return after verification or is this just part of the normal process? Is this just a standard letter they send during the verification process? Should I call the 800 number, or just wait longer since I already completed the ID verification? I'm freaking out a little because I'm counting on that refund. The timing seems weird too - they asked me to verify my identity, but then apparently have no record of my return? Is this just a delay in their system updating or something more serious? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

This is actually a common occurrence. The verification letter you received is part of the IRS fraud prevention process. When you verified your identity, that just passed the first hurdle. Now your return is likely being processed but hasn't fully completed processing. The "no record of processed tax return" letter is essentially saying that as of the date of that letter, they didn't have a FULLY PROCESSED return on file. This doesn't mean they don't have your return at all - just that it's still in the processing pipeline. I'd recommend checking your transcripts again in about 7-10 days. You should see updates as your return moves through the system. If nothing changes after 2 weeks, then you might want to call the IRS at the number provided in the letter to inquire about status.

Thank you so much for this explanation! That makes a lot more sense. I'll check again next week and see if anything changes.

This is spot on. The exact same thing happened to me last year and I got my refund about 3 weeks after verifying.

What if you don't see any changes after 2 weeks? I've been waiting for almost a month since verification with no updates 😩

If no changes after 2 weeks, definitely call. Could be stuck in a different verification queue or might need additional info from you.

I had the exact same issue and was totally confused until I started using taxr.ai to help me understand what was going on with my transcript. It translated all the codes and explained each step of the process in plain English. Turns out this is pretty normal - the system just takes time to update after verification. Instead of guessing what all those cryptic codes and notices mean, the tool basically laid out exactly what stage my return was in and when I could expect my refund. Saved me from hours of stress and Google searches! https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It's AMAZING! You upload your transcript and it breaks down every single code and entry, explains what's happening with your return in normal human language, and even predicts your refund timeline based on your specific situation. Saved me hours of stressing and googling random IRS codes. Best decision I made during tax season for real!

Worth every penny for the peace of mind! I was about to lose my mind trying to decipher what was happening with my return. The tool basically gave me a straight answer immediately. No more waiting on hold for hours with the IRS!

After dealing with a similar situation and getting nowhere, I finally found a way to get someone from the IRS on the phone. Used claimyr.com and within an hour I had an actual human IRS agent call ME back instead of waiting on hold forever. The agent explained that the verification letter is just the first step, and the "no record" letter is automatically generated before processing completes. Got my refund 10 days later! Talking to a real person made all the difference - they even expedited my case once they saw I'd already verified.

Did this actually work? I've tried calling the IRS like 20 times and can never get through 😤

100% worked. I was skeptical too but after wasting hours on hold multiple times, I was desperate. The system basically holds your place in line and calls you when an agent is available. My call with the IRS agent lasted about 15 minutes and cleared everything up. They can see things in their system that don't show up on the transcript yet.

I swear it's real! I thought it was BS too at first but it literally saved my sanity. After three weeks of getting nowhere, having an actual IRS agent explain what was happening with my specific case was worth it. They found my return was stuck in a secondary review queue that I never would've known about otherwise.

just tried it today and it worked! had an agent call me back in about 45 min. turns out my verification didn't go through properly the first time and they helped me fix it right there on the phone!

I just went through this last month! Don't panic - it's the IRS being the IRS. Their systems don't communicate with each other properly. The identity verification system doesn't immediately update the main tax processing system. Give it about 9-12 business days after verification before you start worrying. In my case, I verified on March 29th, got that same confusing letter on April 5th, and then suddenly my refund was approved on April 15th without any additional communication.

The IRS is a joke. Every year there's some new nonsense. I filed in January, got a verification letter in February, verified same day, and STILL got that stupid "no record of processed return" letter in March. Then magically two weeks later my refund appeared. Their left hand has no idea what the right hand is doing 🤡

RIGHT?? Each department acts like a completely separate agency. The verification dept doesn't talk to the processing dept who doesn't talk to the refund dept. And we're stuck in the middle trying to figure it all out.

Been there... my return was "processing" for 11 months last year because of a $12 discrepancy that no one bothered to tell me about 🙃

This is why i always file paper returns. None of this electronic verification BS. Takes longer but I've never had to verify my identity or deal with these mixed messages.

Paper returns are actually WORSE now. My friend did paper and it took 8 months to process lol. We're all screwed either way 😂

Check your account transcript, not just the letter! Look for a TC 570 code which means they've placed a temporary hold on your account during processing. If you see a 971 code, that indicates they sent you a notice (probably that verification letter). These usually appear together during identity verification. You should see a 290 code when they resume processing.

I just checked and I do see both those codes! The 570 is dated 4/22 and the 971 is 4/29. Does that mean it's still processing?

Yes, that sequence confirms it's in processing! The 971 issued AFTER the 570 is exactly what you'd expect with a verification check. Now you just need to watch for a 571 code (which reverses the 570 hold) followed by an 846 code (which is your refund issued date). You're on the right track!

Those verification letters are totally automatic. What happens is that when u verify your identity, it doesn't immediately connect to your return processing. The systems update on different schedules. Give it at least 2-3 weeks after verification before u start worrying.

Make sure to keep checking your transcript for update cycles. The IRS typically updates on Thursday nights/Friday mornings. Look for transaction codes that start with 9xx - those will tell you what's happening with your processing. If you see a 846 code, that's your refund issued date!

Thank you! I'll start checking on Fridays then. Is there a specific section of the transcript I should be looking at?

Look at the Account Transcript specifically (not Return or Wage & Income). Scroll down to the transactions section and look at the most recent codes. The dates and codes there will tell you everything!

I was in the EXACT same boat except my letter came after I already verified! I was losing my mind trying to figure out what all the codes meant and what was happening with my return. I ended up using taxr.ai and it was a game changer! The tool explained everything that was happening with my transcript in plain English and showed me my return was actually still processing normally despite that confusing letter. Highly recommend if you're trying to make sense of all this IRS nonsense.

Try claimyr.com - only way I finally got through after weeks of trying. The IRS agent told me sometimes verifications get stuck in limbo and need manual intervention.

I see this ALL the time. It's completely normal. Here's what happens: 1. You file your return 2. IRS flags for ID verification 3. You verify identity 4. Return enters processing queue 5. During this time, the system still shows "no record of processed return" because technically it's not PROCESSED yet 6. Processing completes (typically 2-3 weeks after verification) 7. Refund issued That letter is automatically generated and doesn't mean anything is wrong. It just means you're in the middle of steps 4-5. Hang tight!

quick question - did you verify through id.me or did you have to call/visit in person? different verification methods have different processing times afterwards

I verified through id.me online - it only took a few minutes but then I got this confusing letter afterward.

Online verification usually processes faster than in-person. You should see movement within 2 weeks. The letter is just a timing issue in their system.

When I couldnt figure out my transcript situation, I called through claimyr.com and the IRS agent explained that those letters are pre-programmed to go out even during processing. Apparently the department that handles verification is completely separate from the department that processes returns, and there's like a 7-14 day lag between systems updating. Talking to an actual agent saved me weeks of anxiety and confusion.
