IRS sent me a Verification of Non-Filing notice dated March 2025 even though I filed in February - Potential identity theft concern?

I just checked my tax return transcripts today and found something I've never seen before. There's a notice from the IRS dated 03-05-2025 saying they received a "request for verification of non-filing of a tax return" on March 04, 2025. The notice is from the Internal Revenue Service, United States Department of the Treasury in PHILADELPHIA, PA 19255-1498. The letter has a Tracking ID: 107585041769 with Date of Issue: 03-04-2025. It's addressed with my name and my Taxpayer Identification Number (last 4 digits only shown on the letter). The notice specifically references Tax Period: December and Return: 1040_SERIES. Under "Information About the Request We Received," it states: "On March 04, 2025 we received a request for verification of non-filing of a tax return. As of the date of this letter, we have no record of a processed tax return for the tax period listed above." The thing is, I definitely filed my taxes back in February 2025. I got an acceptance notification from my tax software within 24 hours of filing. Does this mean I need to verify something with the IRS? Has anyone seen this before? I'm confused because the tracking ID starts with 10758 and I've never requested any verification of non-filing. The letter says "If you have any questions, you can call 800-829-1040" but before I spend hours on hold with the IRS, I wanted to check if anyone else has experienced this. Should I be worried about identity theft? Why would someone request verification that I haven't filed when I definitely did file?

Romeo Quest

This actually sounds like someone else requested verification that you didn't file. This is common when applying for financial aid, certain benefits, or loans where they need to confirm your income (or lack thereof). The letter is simply stating that someone requested this verification on May 4th, and as of that date, the IRS confirms they have no record of your processed return yet. If you did file in February and received acceptance from your tax software, there are a few possibilities: 1. Your return is still being processed and hasn't fully posted to the IRS system yet 2. There was an issue with your return that's causing a delay 3. The return was rejected but you weren't notified 4. Someone requested this verification for an earlier tax year (2024 or earlier) I recommend checking your Where's My Refund status and reviewing all your tax transcripts (not just return transcripts but account transcripts too). You should also contact the IRS at the number provided (800-829-1040) to clarify the situation and confirm they received your filing.

Thanks for clarifying! I'm relieved to hear it might not be anything to worry about. I'll check the Where's My Refund tool right away and look at my account transcripts too.

I had something similar happen last year. Turned out my university had requested it for financial aid verification. Check if you applied for FAFSA or anything like that recently.

This is good advice but good luck actually reaching anyone at the IRS on that number. Last time I tried I was on hold for 2 hours then got disconnected 🤬

i used claimyr.com to get through to the IRS in like 20 minutes. Best money I ever spent after weeks of getting the "we're too busy, call back later" message.

For real? Does that actually work? Seems too good to be true after all the hours I've wasted on hold...

100% works! I was skeptical too but was desperate. They basically navigate the phone tree and wait on hold for you, then call you when an agent is on the line. Saved me a ton of stress and the agent helped resolve my issue in one call.

I've been in this exact situation before. The best way to understand what's actually happening with your transcript isn't by asking random people to guess - use taxr.ai instead. It completely changed how I handle my tax issues. The tool analyzes your transcript, explains all those confusing codes and notices, and tells you exactly what's happening and what steps to take next. I uploaded my similar notice and instantly knew what was going on instead of spending days researching and worrying. It's insanely good! I use it every week during tax season. https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It reads your transcript AND explains everything in plain english. It identifies issues, tells you what each code means specifically for YOUR situation (not just generic definitions), and gives you personalized next steps. It also keeps track of your refund progress and can even spot potential delays before they become problems. Honestly it's like having a tax pro in your pocket 24/7.

OMG THANK YOU FOR THIS RECOMMENDATION! Just tried it and finally understand what's happening with my refund after weeks of confusion. This tool is a game-changer seriously. Everyone dealing with the IRS needs to know about this!!!

does it need your personal info? seems sketchy to upload tax docs to some random site 🤔

I was worried about that too but you can blur out your personal info before uploading. The tool just needs to see the codes and dates. Plus they explain all their security stuff on the site.

After dealing with a similar issue last month, I finally found a way to get someone on the phone at the IRS using the Claimyr app. I had been trying for weeks to talk to someone about this exact situation - had filed my taxes but got a weird non-filing notice. The app got me connected to an actual human at the IRS within 30 minutes when I had previously been hung up on multiple times due to "high call volume." The agent explained that sometimes these notices cross in the mail with processing and my return was actually being processed normally. Talking to an agent got my anxiety resolved so fast - worth every penny for the peace of mind. You can find it at claimyr.com

does this actually work? i've tried calling the IRS like 20 times and keep getting the "try again later" message

Yes! That's exactly what was happening to me too. The app basically calls for you and navigates the whole phone tree mess, then alerts you when they have an agent on the line. I was skeptical but desperate enough to try anything after wasting hours on failed calls.

sounds like a scam. why would you pay someone to make a phone call? 🤡

Not a scam at all. Have you actually tried calling the IRS lately? It's literally impossible some days. I used this service too and finally resolved a problem that had been hanging over my head for months. Sometimes your time is worth more than money.

This is suspicious. I'd check if someone is trying to file taxes using your SSN. I'd look up the number on the official IRS site (not the one on the letter) and call to verify if you actually filed. This has scam written all over it.

The image OP shared actually looks like it's from the official IRS transcript system, not a letter they received in the mail. These verification notices do appear on transcripts.

Ah you're right, I missed that. Still worth calling to check though since they filed in February.

The IRS is so messed up these days. I filed back in January and still don't have my refund. They sent me 3 different letters asking for the same info I already provided. System is completely broken.

Did you file electronically or by mail? If you filed by mail, they're extremely backed up and it could take 6+ months to process. If you filed electronically and got an acceptance notification, check your account transcript for any codes like 570 or 971 which might indicate issues.

0 coins

-

Lydia Santiago

I filed electronically through TurboTax and got the acceptance notification within a day. I'll check for those codes you mentioned.

Perfect. Look for these common transcript codes: - 150 (tax return filed) - 570 (processing hold) - 971 (notice issued) - 846 (refund issued) If you see 570 and 971 together, it often means there's an issue they're trying to resolve. Let us know what you find!

Just checked and I don't see any of those codes! Just the verification of non-filing notice. Does that mean my return never actually got to the IRS even though TurboTax said it was accepted??

Toot-n-Mighty

TurboTax acceptance just means they received it and it passed initial validation - not that the IRS fully processed it. Sometimes returns get stuck in limbo or rejected later in the process. You def need to call the IRS.

This happened to me last year. Turned out someone at my student loan servicer requested this verification because I was on an income-based repayment plan. I never even knew they did this until I saw it on my transcript. Might be worth checking if you have any loans, benefits, etc that would need income verification.

0 coins

-

Lydia Santiago

That's a really good point! I do have student loans and I'm on an income-driven plan. Maybe that's what triggered this. Still weird that it says they don't have my return on file though.

Yeah the timing is probably just bad luck. Your loan servicer requested it right before (or while) your return was still being processed. Nothing to worry about for the loan part - they'll just request it again later if needed.

Does the notice apply to 2025 taxes or 2024 taxes? The tax year versus the notice year can be confusing.

0 coins

-

Lydia Santiago

The notice mentions "Tax Period: December 2025" which I assume means 2025 taxes (filed in 2026). But I'm not 100% sure how to read that.

0 coins

-

DeShawn Washington

Yes that's correct. It's referring to the 2025 tax year (which ended in December 2025). So this is about the return you just filed in 2026.

Check your credit reports ASAP! This could be identity theft. Someone might have applied for credit using your SSN and the lender is verifying your income with the IRS.

This is good advice regardless but don't panic yet. These verification requests are super common for legitimate reasons too - schools, loan servicers, benefits programs, etc. all request these routinely.

Interesting that the tracking ID begins with 10758... all my verification requests start with different numbers. Maybe this is from a specific program or agency? Anyone know if different requestors get different ID prefixes?

I'd try to access your Record of Account transcript too - not just the Return transcript. The Record of Account shows more detailed information about what's happening with your tax account. You might see processing codes there that don't show up on other transcripts.

True that! Here's the direct path: Log in > View Tax Records > Get Transcript Online > Record of Account Transcript > 2025. That should get you there without the endless clicking around.

Reading all the IRS codes and notices is like trying to decode an alien language. I literally need an interpreter to understand what they're trying to tell me. Their system is purposely designed to be confusing I swear.

SO TRUE! I literally have a spreadsheet where I track all the different codes I've seen on my transcripts over the years 😂

I found that taxr.ai is literally the interpreter you're looking for. I was in the same boat - completely lost with all the codes. The tool reads your transcript and explains everything in simple terms. Total game changer for me.

When you filed your taxes in February, did you get any confirmation email from the IRS (not just from TurboTax)? Also, did you check your bank account to see if any refund was deposited or if there was an attempted deposit that may have been rejected?

0 coins

-

Lydia Santiago

I only got confirmation from TurboTax, not directly from the IRS. And no, I haven't seen any deposits or attempted deposits from the IRS yet.

My sister-in-law had this exact issue. It turned out her return was flagged for identity verification but they never sent her the letter. she had to call and go through the ID verification process before they would process her return. the whole thing took an extra 3 months.

Whatever you do, DON'T call the number on that notice without verifying it first! Look up the official IRS number separately and call that. There are so many scams going around this tax season.

This is good advice for any contact from the "IRS" - always call the main IRS number (800-829-1040) and ask to be transferred to the right department rather than calling random numbers in letters or emails.

If you actually want to talk to the irs, use a calling service. I used claimyr.com and it was so much better than the literal days of my life I've wasted trying to reach them myself. It only took about 30 mins to get a person on the line who actually was helpful and told me exactly what the issue was with my return and how to fix it.
