Received IRS "Verification of Non-Filing" letter dated March 2025 for my 2024 taxes that I filed in February - possible identity theft concern?
I just got my first IRS letter ever and I'm really confused. The letter is dated March 5, 2025, and states they received a request for verification of non-filing for my 2024 tax return. The weird part is they're saying they have no record of my processed tax return, but I definitely filed back in February! I checked my return transcripts today and found this letter from the Internal Revenue Service, United States Department of the Treasury from PHILADELPHIA, PA 19255-1498. It has a Tracking ID: 107585041769 and Date of Issue: 03-04-2025. It lists my Tax Period as December and Return: 1040_SERIES. Under "Information About the Request We Received," it says "On March 04, 2025, we received a request for verification of non-filing of a tax return" and "As of the date of this letter, we have no record of a processed tax return for the tax period listed above." The letter says I can call 800-829-1040 if I have any questions. What's concerning me is that I never asked for this verification of non-filing. Someone requested verification on March 04, 2025, but it wasn't me! Could someone be trying to file using my information? Should I be worried about identity theft? Has anyone seen something like this before? I'm completely new to dealing with the IRS and don't know what to make of this.

This sounds like it could be a few different things. First, don't panic. When did you file your return and how did you file it (e-file or paper)? Did you get a confirmation when you filed? If someone requested verification of non-filing, it could be a lender or government agency that needed proof of your tax situation. For example, if you applied for a mortgage, student loan, or certain benefits, they might request this verification. However, if you definitely filed and the IRS has no record, you should: 1. Check your filing confirmation (from your tax software or preparer) 2. Call the IRS at the number on the letter to confirm the letter is legitimate 3. If you e-filed, contact the company you used to see if there were submission errors 4. If you paper-filed, consider sending a duplicate return with a copy of the letter attached The timing is concerning - if you filed in February, they should have a record by May, unless there was a processing delay or your return was rejected without you knowing.

I e-filed through TurboTax on February 10th and got a confirmation that it was accepted on Feb 12. Never got any rejection notification or anything like that. i'll try calling the number from the letter tomorrow.

Definitely call. Sometimes returns get flagged for identity verification and held in a sort of limbo state. The IRS might not consider it "processed" yet even though you received an acceptance. Keep us posted!

Had the same exact issue last year! My return got stuck in processing for months even though it was technically "accepted". The non-filing letter scared me but it ended up being a simple ID verification issue.

You need to get a proper reading of your transcript. I had a similar issue where my transcript was showing all kinds of confusing codes and I spent WEEKS trying to figure out what was going on. I finally used this tool called taxr.ai and it explained everything going on in my transcript in plain english. Turns out my return had been flagged but not fully rejected. The tool highlighted exactly where in the process my return was stuck and what I needed to do. Saved me so much time compared to trying to decode everything myself or waiting on hold with the IRS for hours. https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It actually does a ton. You upload your transcript and it uses AI to analyze every code and transaction on it. It flags potential issues, explains what each code means for YOUR specific situation (not just generic explanations), and even gives you a timeline of what's happening with your refund. It caught things in my transcript I would have NEVER understood on my own.

Just tried it and holy cow - this thing is incredible! I've been staring at my transcript for days completely confused, and taxr broke everything down in seconds. Totally worth it to actually understand what's happening with my return instead of just guessing. Thanks for the recommendation!

Does it handle amended returns too? My situation is a mess after I had to amend twice 😩

Yeah it covers amended returns too! My friend had a super complicated situation with multiple amendments and it sorted through all the confusion.

After fighting with the IRS about a similar letter last year, I finally found a way to actually talk to a real person. I used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that somehow gets you past all the IRS phone system nonsense - they called me back with an actual agent on the line within 45 minutes! Seriously the best money I ever spent considering I was trying to reach someone at the IRS for weeks. The agent was able to see that my return was actually in the system but had been flagged for manual review. Got everything sorted in one call.

Wait for real? Every time I call I just get the "due to high call volume" message and get disconnected 🤬

100% real. I was skeptical at first too but was desperate after trying for literally 3 weeks straight. The service somehow gets you in the priority queue. They call you when an agent is available so you don't have to stay on hold forever.

Is this actually legit? Sounds too good to be true tbh

Completely legit. I thought it was too good to be true too but was at my wits end. Had an IRS agent on the phone same day. They dont speak for you or anything - they just get you connected to an actual person instead of the automated system from hell.

This happened to me before. Someone was trying to verify my non-filing status to get some benefit (in my case it was student loan stuff). If you definitely filed, call the IRS ASAP to make sure someone isnt trying to use your info to file a fraudulent return. They might have put a soft hold on your record which could explain why your actual return is in limbo.

The IRS is a total disaster right now. I filed back in January and got a similar letter in April. Turns out my return was sitting in some queue for manual review for no apparent reason. when I finally got through to someone on the phone (after 4 HOURS on hold), they couldn't even tell me why it was flagged. They just released it and I finally got my refund two weeks later. The whole system is broken.

Agreed! Their whole system is running on computers from the stone age. My tax preparer told me they're still using technology from the 1960s for some of their processes. No wonder everything's such a mess.

Yep they're still using COBOL programming language from like 60 years ago. My dad is a retired programmer who got called back to help them during covid because so few people know how to work with their ancient systems 😂

Check your Where's My Refund tool on the IRS website - does it show anything? Also check if your bank account info was entered correctly when you filed. Sometimes when the banking info is wrong, the return gets stuck in a weird status.

This letter is concerning because someone requested verification of your non-filing status. That means someone is checking if you filed or not, which could be identity theft. I would: 1. Place a fraud alert with the credit bureaus 2. Check your credit reports 3. Call the IRS Identity Protection Unit at 800-908-4490 4. File Form 14039 (Identity Theft Affidavit) if you suspect fraud Don't wait on this one - I had something similar happen and someone tried to file a fake return in my name to get my refund.

Oh crap this is making me really nervous now. I didn't even think about identity theft. I'm going to check my credit reports right now.

Smart move. Better safe than sorry. Also set up ID protection with the IRS if you can - it's free and gives you a PIN that's required to file your taxes.

The date on the letter is key here - March 4th, 2025 is when the request was made, not when you filed. Someone is checking on your filing status. Common reasons include: - Mortgage applications - Student loan forgiveness programs - Social services eligibility - Court proceedings Did you apply for any of these recently? If not, then it could potentially be suspicious.

The letter I got says May 12th not March 4th. But no, I haven't applied for any loans or benefits recently. That's why I'm worried.

Oh sorry I misread the date. May 12th is very recent then. Definitely call the IRS ASAP - that's not normal especially if you haven't authorized any verification requests.

This exact thing happened to me. Turns out my return was rejected but the tax software never notified me. I thought everything was fine until I got that letter. Check your email spam folder for any messages from your tax filing service.

I work for a mortgage company (not giving tax advice just sharing experience). We request these verification letters all the time for loan applications. If you applied for a mortgage or refinance recently, this is probably why. BUT if you didn't request this through any application process, then someone else might be using your info which is a problem.

I haven't applied for any loans or anything like that. That's why I'm confused about who would request this verification.

In that case, definitely call the IRS fraud department. Someone shouldn't be able to request this info without your consent unless they're law enforcement with proper authorization.

Tbh the IRS is swamped right now. I filed LAST February (2024) and just got my refund last month. They're over a year behind on some returns. Your return might be in the system but not fully processed yet, which is why the verification showed no return. Don't assume the worst yet.

Did you check the IRS Transcript tool online? It will show if they received your return even if it hasn't been fully processed yet. It's much more detailed than the Where's My Refund tool.

I checked the transcript tool and that's actually where I found this letter. But there's no indication of my return being received or processed anywhere else in the transcript.

That's concerning. If it's not showing up at all, one of three things happened: 1) It was rejected and you weren't notified, 2) It never actually transmitted despite the confirmation, or 3) There's some identity issue. You need to call them tomorrow morning first thing.

You definitely need to call the IRS directly (good luck with that lol). I had something similar happen and spent like 3 months untangling it. For me, my employer had submitted my W-2 with a typo in my SSN which caused my return to be flagged and put in limbo - it wasn't rejected but wasn't processed either.

ok so i had EXACTLY this same issue last year and here's what happened: my tax preparer e-filed and got confirmation but apparently there was a mismatch in my birthdate on one of the forms. The system accepted the initial submission but then flagged it during processing. My refund was held up for MONTHS. Get a tax advocate assigned to your case - it's the only way to get this resolved quickly.

I've seen this scam before!! Make sure the letter is actually from the IRS. The real IRS letterhead has specific security features. If the number on the letter isn't 800-829-1040 then it's definitely fake. Scammers send fake letters then follow up with calls claiming to be the IRS to steal your info.

The number on the letter is 800-829-1040 and I found it in my online transcript account on the official IRS website, so I think it's legitimate.

After getting the runaround from the IRS for weeks about my transcript issues, I found this tool called taxr.ai that literally saved my sanity. it analyzed my transcript and explained that my return was actually flagged for income verification. The website showed me exactly what was happening with my return and what steps I needed to take. The IRS agents I talked to couldn't even give me this level of clarity! https://taxr.ai

trying to call the IRS is a nightmare. spent 6 hours on hold last month only to be disconnected. i finally broke down and used claimyr.com and got a call back in 40 minutes with an IRS agent already on the line. the agent told me my return was stuck in the error resolution department even though the system had initially accepted it. talking to a live person got everything cleared up in one call and my refund was released a week later.

yes!! i was skeptical too but I was desperate after trying for weeks. When they got me through I almost cried because I'd been trying so long to reach someone. Absolutely worth every penny considering my refund was several thousand dollars just sitting in limbo.

This happened 2 me last year - turns out my state benefit program requested verification without telling me. Check if ur enrolled in any state programs (SNAP, medicaid, etc) as they sometimes do periodic eligibility checks.

If you're positive you filed and it was accepted, print a copy of your return and the acceptance confirmation. You may need to submit Form 4506-T (Request for Transcript of Tax Return) to get official documentation of what's happening. Their systems are so backed up right now.

No joke. My dad works for them and even he says it's a disaster. They're running on systems from the 1970s and get this - they still use ACTUAL PHYSICAL PAPER for half their processes. Like actual filing cabinets full of tax returns. In 2025!!! 🤦♂️
