E-filed on March 15 with blank transcripts for weeks - IRS says I need to verify identity but still no letter
I e-filed my return on March 15 but my transcripts have been completely blank ever since. I finally got through to the IRS today after multiple attempts and was told that I need to verify my identity. The weird thing is they said the verification letter hasn't even been sent out yet. Has anyone been in this situation? Is there any way I can just verify over the phone instead of waiting for this phantom letter that might take forever to arrive? Any advice would be appreciated since I'm counting on that refund.

This is a common issue this year. What's happening is the IRS has flagged your return for identity verification through their ID Verify program. Unfortunately, you usually can't complete this verification by phone - most agents will tell you that you must wait for the letter (CP01H or 5071C) which contains a specific verification code. You have two options: 1. Wait for the letter and follow instructions (typically directs you to idverify.irs.gov) 2. Try to be proactive by creating an ID.me account and attempting to access your IRS online account. Sometimes this will trigger the verification system and let you complete it without the letter. The verification delay is frustrating but it's an anti-fraud measure. Once verified, your return should process within 2-3 weeks typically. If 6 weeks pass with no letter, call the Identity Verification line directly: 800-830-5084 rather than the main IRS number.

•thank you for the detailed response! I'll try setting up the ID.me account and see if that helps. Has anyone actually had success doing it this way?

•I did the ID.me route last year and it worked! Didn't need the letter after all. Just make sure you have all your documents ready because the verification is pretty thorough.

•The ID.me process is a NIGHTMARE! tried 4 times and kept getting rejected. had to wait for stupid letter anyway 🤡

I was in a similar situation last tax season and was totally frustrated with blank transcripts. I started using taxr.ai to actually understand what was happening with my return and it was a game changer. Instead of guessing what codes meant or why my refund was delayed, it analyzed everything and explained exactly what was happening and what steps I needed to take. It showed me that I had an identity verification flag before I even got the letter! Don't waste time trying to piece together info from random forums like I did for weeks. Just use taxr.ai and get actual clarity on your situation. It saved me so much stress! https://taxr.ai

•Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

•It does WAY more than just read the transcript. It analyzes all the codes and dates, explains what each one means for YOUR specific situation, tells you what's happening behind the scenes at the IRS, and gives you a clear timeline of what to expect next. It even identified my verification issue before the IRS sent me anything! Literally saved me weeks of stress and confusion. Everyone dealing with IRS issues needs to know about this tool!

•another tax tool promising miracles 🙄 does it actually work tho?

•Listen, I was skeptical too! But after spending HOURS on hold with the IRS and getting different answers from every agent, this tool gave me more clarity in 5 minutes than I got in weeks of calls. It's not promising miracles - it's just making sense of all the confusing IRS jargon and codes. Totally changed my approach to dealing with my tax situation.

After being stuck in the same limbo for almost 4 weeks, I used a calling service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected with an actual IRS agent who confirmed my identity verification issue. They basically hold your place in line and call you when they're about to connect you to an agent. Talking to a real person at the IRS was worth every penny because they were able to verify me right then and my refund was released about 10 days later. Beats waiting for some letter that might never show up!

•Wait so this actually works? I've been on hold with the IRS for literally hours and keep getting disconnected.

•Yeah it actually does work. I was super skeptical at first but I was desperate after trying for 2 weeks to get through. They got me connected to an agent in about 2 hours which was honestly a miracle compared to what I was dealing with before.

•idk sounds sketchy. how do u know its not a scam trying to get ur info?

•They don't ask for any personal info at all - they just call the IRS and when they're about to connect, they call you and merge the calls. You talk directly to the IRS agent, not through any intermediary. Saved me from taking a day off work just to be on hold.

•I tried this yesterday and it worked! Best money I ever spent to get this refund moving. Agent confirmed my ID verify issue and helped me complete it over the phone.

The IRS is a complete joke this year. I filed February 1st and im STILL waiting for my refund. No letters, no explanations, just crickets. When I finally got through after waiting on hold for 3 HOURS they told me "just keep waiting" 💀

The verification letter is called 5071C or Letter 4883 depending on what type of verification they need. BUT the IRS is super backed up sending these out (like 6-8 weeks behind). I was able to verify without the letter by calling the Identity Verification number directly (800-830-5084). Waited about an hour but the agent was able to verify me over the phone. Don't call the main IRS number - they can't help with this.

•Keep trying! Call exactly when they open (7am eastern). That's how I got through after failing multiple times.

I had this EXACT issue. Filed March 2, blank transcript until April 27. Never got a letter but I logged into the IRS website through ID.me and it immediately prompted me for identity verification. Completed it online and my refund was issued 9 days later. Try that first!

Dealing with the IRS is litterly the worst. I had to verify my identity last yr and the letter took 2 months to arrive. By the time I got it my return was already bumped to errors department for taking to long lmao. What a system.

If you have income verification requirements from a lender, apartment, etc, this delay could cause serious problems. Make sure to contact whoever needs your tax info and explain the situation. Many will accept alternative documentation while you wait for the IRS to get their act together. Learned this the hard way last year when my mortgage got delayed because of ID verification issues.

The trick is to visit your local Taxpayer Assistance Center in person! I was stuck in ID verification limbo and scheduled an appointment at my local TAC. The agent verified me right there and my refund was processed the following week. You need to call 844-545-5640 to schedule the appointment though - you can't just walk in.

•This is the actual best advice. I did this and it was WAY faster than waiting for that stupid letter.

•Do you know what documents I need to bring to the appointment? I'm gonna try this.

•Bring two forms of ID (one with photo), your social security card, and a copy of the tax return in question if you have it. Also any IRS notices you've received. Better to bring extra documentation than not enough!

FYI - if you have a tax preparer, they can call the Practitioner Priority Line on your behalf, which has much shorter wait times. Sometimes they can get you verified over the phone through a three-way call. Worth asking if you used a professional preparer!

just checked and I finally have some transcript movement! Going to share what worked for me - I called the Taxpayer Protection Program number (800-830-5084) directly, ignored the main IRS number. Waited 55 mins but they verified me over the phone. Transcript updated 2 days later with DDD! Don't wait for the letter.

The entire identity verification process is a scam. They flagged me for "identity verification" and when I finally got the letter and completed the process, guess what? No issues found! They just wasted 2 months of my time for no reason. The whole system is designed to delay refunds as long as possible so they can hold onto our money.

•YUP! IRS holds onto millions in refunds earning interest while we all suffer waiting. Total scam.

•Tbf there's a TON of tax identity fraud. My cousin had someone file a fake return in her name last yr. These measures suck but they're kinda necessary.

•Then they need a better system. Other financial institutions can verify identity instantly. The IRS is living in the stone age intentionally.

Whatever u do DON'T waste time calling the general IRS number. They just transfer you around and nobody can actually help. Call the dedicated ID Verify line or try the ID.me route. I wasted 3 weeks calling the wrong departments before figuring this out.
