Need phone number to verify ID with IRS - Called 800-830-5084 repeatedly with no success

I filed my return on 2/13 and got notified I needed to verify my identity. I did the online verification process last Thursday, but I'm anxious to confirm it actually went through since my transcript is still completely blank. I've been trying the 800-830-5084 number for identity verification but it's absolutely impossible to get through to anyone. The automated system just keeps hanging up on me because of 'high call volume' no matter what time of day I try. Does anyone know an alternative number or method to check if my ID verification was successful? Or how long it typically takes for transcripts to update after verifying?

Connor Murphy

The number you've been calling (800-830-5084) is the correct one for ID verification, but it's notoriously difficult to get through, especially during filing season. If you successfully completed the online verification, you typically don't need to call unless you received specific instructions to do so. Online verification is usually processed within 9-21 days. If your transcript is still blank after verification, that's normal - it takes time to process. Here's what you should know: • Online verification is just as valid as phone verification • Your transcript won't update immediately - expect at least 9 days minimum • The "Where's My Refund" tool may update before your transcript does • If it's been more than 3 weeks since verifying, then try calling the general IRS line at 800-829-1040 Just be patient for now. The system works slowly but it does work.

Thank you so much for the detailed info! That makes me feel better. I'll try to be patient and wait the full 3 weeks before panicking more haha.

Hi there - unfortunately the wait times can even be longer than the 3 weeks sometimes. Last year I waited almost 6 weeks after verification before seeing any movement.

I second this! My transcript was blank for nearly 4 weeks after I verified, then suddenly one morning everything updated at once. The system is just slow af

I was in the same situation and got frustrated with the outdated IRS systems. I discovered taxr.ai and it was seriously a game-changer. It analyzed my transcript and explained exactly what was happening with my return, including the verification status. It showed me what codes would appear once verification was complete and what to expect next. Way better than trying to decipher the cryptic IRS codes and messages myself! I literally check it every couple days now to monitor for updates. https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

OMG IT'S AMAZING. It doesn't just read the transcript - it explains everything in plain english, tells you what each code means specifically for YOUR situation, gives you timelines, and even predicts what will happen next. Like having a personal tax pro but without paying hundreds of dollars. I was literally about to hire an accountant before I found this.

Not at all like those other sites! This isn't just generic advice - it's AI that analyzes YOUR specific transcript and situation. Saved me so much stress and confusion. I recommend it to literally everyone dealing with IRS issues now.

After spending WEEKS trying to get through to that verification number, I finally got help using the Claimyr app (claimyr.com). It basically holds your place in line and calls you when an agent is available. I was super skeptical at first but it actually worked! Got a callback within 2 hours and the agent confirmed my verification was complete on their end but just hadn't updated in the system yet. Totally worth it to finally get answers instead of endless busy signals.

wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? i've waisted so much time on hold this year i'm about to lose my mind

It legitimately works. I was on hold for a total of like 5 minutes instead of the 3+ hours I spent trying to call myself. The agent I talked to was actually helpful too. Best money I've spent during this whole tax nightmare.

sounds like one of those ads that pops up everywhere. anyone ACTUALLY try this besides the person selling it? 🤔

I used it last week actually. Got through to someone who confirmed my ID verification went through. Was worth every penny to not waste more vacation days sitting on hold.

If you verified online successfully, you should have gotten a confirmation page. Did you screenshot it? That's proof it went through. And yeah the blank transcript is normal - mine stayed blank for like 17 days after verification then suddenly updated with like 6 different codes all at once.

Trying to call the IRS is like trying to win the lottery while being struck by lightning and seeing Bigfoot at the same time. I spent 4 hours on hold last week and then got disconnected when they transferred me 💀

The irs is so understaffed and overwhelmed right now that your best bet is just to wait it out. I filed 1/29, verified 2/8, and my transcript finally updated yesterday. So about 3 weeks after verification for me.

The IRS is a joke, we pay taxes and they can't even hire enough ppl to answer the damn phones 🤡

My boyfriend had this same issue in 2022. What we found is that online verification works fine, but the system is sloooooow to update. His transcript was blank for almost 4 weeks after verification. Just be patient, you should be good.

For future reference since I see you already completed the online verification—there's actually a separate number for checking ID verification status: 866-830-5269. it's easier to get through on that one because fewer ppl know about it. But honestly if you did the online verification successfully you should be fine.

Thanks so much for this! I'll try that number if I don't see updates in the next week or so.

I can share what happened to me last year. I verified online and my transcript stayed blank for exactly 16 days. Then boom, one day it updated with the 570 and 971 codes, then 4 days later got the 846 deposit code. Total time from verification to refund was about 3.5 weeks.

Just waited it out. I tried calling a few times but couldn't get through so I just checked my transcript every morning til it updated.

honestly if u verified online ur fine. thats actully better than calling cuz then theres a record in the system. calling is just gonna waste ur time, they gonna tell u the same thing that u gotta wait anyway

PRO TIP: Call exactly at 7:00am Eastern when they open. That's the ONLY time I've ever gotten through without a wait. I called at 7:01am once and still had a 45 minute wait, but right at 7:00am I got through instantly.

Try Monday around 8am... Thats when I FINALLY got through. Although after 3 weeks of trying I ended up using Claimyr.com and got a call back in under an hour. Best $25 I ever spent considering I had already wasted like 15 hours of my life on hold.

Honestly after dealing with the IRS for 3 months last year I finally broke down and used taxr.ai to decode my transcript and situation. It told me EXACTLY what was going on, what would happen next, and when I'd see my refund. Made everything crystal clear instead of guessing and stressing. https://taxr.ai

This isn't like those generic tax prep services or loan advance scams. It's an AI tool that analyzes your specific transcript and explains every code, date, and issue. It showed me my hold was due to a specific credit claim and not an audit (which I was freaking out about). Saved me countless hours and stress!

I see everyone saying wait but for me it was different. My online verification didn't process correctly and I only found out because I eventually got through on the phone after 3 weeks of waiting. If you don't see any update after 2 weeks I'd try calling the TAC appointment number early morning (844-545-5640) - they can sometimes help with verification issues too.

Same happened to me!!! My "successful" online verification actually didn't go through on their end. Only found out when I finally got through on the phone.

What a coincidence, I'm also waiting for transcript updates after verifying! Filed 2/10, verified 2/19, and still have a blank transcript. We're in the same boat! 🙃

Next year PLEASE use a tax professional so you dont have to go through this verification garbage. I've never had to verify when my CPA files for me.

-

Jamal Washington

Thats not true. I used a CPA and still had to verify this year. It's more about certain credits or if your info changed from previous years.

Exactly. I've used the same CPA for 6 years and got hit with verification this year because I moved states.

If you're really worried about it, you can try calling your local Taxpayer Advocate Service office. Look up the number for your state. Sometimes they can check if verification went through.

The IRS says anyone who files early (before mid feb) or claims certain credits are AUTOMATICALLY flagged for additional verification. It's not your fault, just their stupid system. Online verification is 100% fine just gotta wait for them to process it.

I know several ppl have already mentioned this, but I have to second using claimyr.com to get through. I used it twice this year, once for verification and once for an amended return. Got a live agent both times without sitting on hold all day. Changed my whole tax season experience.

It doesn't fix the system but it does get you to an actual human when you need one. I was skeptical too but talking to an agent got my refund released within days after being stuck for almost 2 months.
