Called IRS about ID Verification - No Portal Notification but Need to Wait for Letter

Hey tax friends! Just wanted to share my experience since I know many of you are in the same boat. I called the IRS verification number today to see if I needed to verify my identity (since my refund's been delayed). Turns out I DO need to verify - they said it was posted to my account on May 3rd and I have to wait until the 24th for the letter to arrive. If I don't get it by then, I'll need to call back and have it reissued. The weird thing is, everyone here keeps saying the IRS portal would notify you if verification was needed, but mine never showed anything! Has anyone else experienced this? My transcripts have been blank this whole time and WMR just says "still being processed." Are they changing their notification process or something? Anyone know if verifying by phone is possible instead of waiting for the letter?

You're in verification limbo. This happens a lot. The IRS systems don't always talk to each other. Your account got flagged for verification but the portal notification system didn't update. It's frustrating but common. Just be ready for that letter on the 24th and follow the instructions exactly. Don't call before then - they won't help you until that date passes.

I think... I might have a suggestion that could help. I was in a similar situation last month where my transcript showed nothing but I needed verification. I used taxr.ai to analyze what little info I could see in my account. It actually detected the pending verification flag before I got the letter. Maybe... it could help you understand what's happening behind the scenes? The site explained exactly what to expect next in my case.

I've heard about these transcript analysis tools before, but I'm not convinced they work better than just waiting for official IRS communication. In 2022, I had a similar verification issue and just had to wait for the letter. No online tool could have sped that up.

Did taxr.ai actually give you information you couldn't see yourself? I'm curious because I'm also waiting for verification and wondering if it's worth trying. Did it tell you anything about timelines or specific issues?

I wonder if this is similar to when my account had a freeze code that wasn't visible to me but was still affecting processing. Would this tool have shown that too? My situation was different from identity verification though.

I've been searching through the r/IRS subreddit and saw a few posts about taxr.ai. Does it work with partial transcript information? My transcript is currently showing N/A for 2023 but has my prior years.

Think of the IRS verification system like a restaurant with multiple servers. One server (the phone line) knows your order is ready, but forgot to tell the food runner (the portal) to bring it to your table. So you're sitting there waiting while your food is actually done in the kitchen. The letter is basically the manager coming over to sort everything out. This happens a lot in May when they're processing the last big wave of April filers.

I had the exact same issue and wasted so much time trying to get through to an agent. Finally used Claimyr and got connected within 20 minutes instead of spending hours on hold. The agent confirmed my verification letter was already sent and gave me these options: • Wait for the letter (arrives in 7-10 business days typically) • Visit a local Taxpayer Assistance Center if urgent (bring two forms of ID) • Request a new letter if not received by the specified date Honestly worth it just to know what was happening with my return!

I'm a bit wary about this May 24th date they gave you. In my experience from April 12th when I had to verify, the letters typically arrive within 5-7 business days of being generated. If they told you it was posted on May 3rd, you should have received it by now or very soon. I wonder if the representative was just giving you a generic timeframe rather than checking the actual mail date.

The IDTVA (Identity Theft Victim Assistance) department operates on a different timeline than standard IRS correspondence. Verification letters (CP01) are batch-processed weekly, and the 21-day window includes both processing and USPS delivery time. The May 24th date is likely the system-generated follow-up date, not the expected delivery date.

The portal notifications aren't reliable. Never have been. They're supposed to work. They often don't. I've had three verifications in five years. Only one showed in the portal. Letters always came though. Trust the phone rep. They see the actual system notes.

Has anyone tried calling the specific Identity Verification number instead of the main IRS line? Last year when I had to verify, I called 800-830-5084 directly and they were able to verify me over the phone without the letter. I'm wondering if that's still an option or if they've changed the process for 2024 returns?

I had almost exactly the same situation, possibly with a slightly different timeline. My verification was posted April 2nd, and I didn't get any portal notification whatsoever. The letter arrived around April 15th (a bit later than expected), and I verified online the same day. My refund was processed about 9 days later, which seems to be fairly typical for verification cases. You might want to check your mailbox carefully, as the envelope looks somewhat generic and could be mistaken for junk mail.
