Updated identity verification over phone after transcript showed no movement for weeks - agent says 2-9 week wait for refund

Filed my taxes early April and was expecting a quick turnaround on my refund. After a month of no updates on my WMR status, I checked my transcripts on May 18th and nothing had changed there either. Finally decided to call the IRS directly yesterday and found out they needed additional identity verification beyond what I'd submitted online back on April 15th. Got through to an agent who helped verify everything over the phone right then. He confirmed all my information was approved but warned it could take anywhere from 2-9 weeks to actually see my refund hit my account. Just wanted to share my experience for anyone else stuck in limbo wondering what's going on. If your transcripts aren't updating and it's been more than a few weeks, definitely pick up the phone and call them.

This is a common issue with identity verification this year. The 2-9 week timeframe is actually pretty standard after completing ID verification. The IRS system has several processing stages after verification: 1. Initial acceptance of the verification (1-2 weeks) 2. Case closure in their verification system (1-3 more weeks) 3. Return to normal processing pipeline (2-4 more weeks) In total, most people see movement around 5-6 weeks after verification, though some get lucky with faster processing. Keep checking your transcript weekly for code 846 (refund issued) - that's when you'll know the exact deposit date. I'd recommend setting up IRS account alerts if you haven't already. And make sure any mail from the IRS doesn't get missed as they sometimes send follow-up verification requests.

Thanks for breaking that down! Really helps to know what to expect. I'll definitely keep checking my transcript weekly now.

I ended up waiting almost the full 9 weeks last year after my ID verification. It's frustrating but at least they eventually process it.

0 coins

this is why I love this sub. actual helpful information instead of just "call the IRS" which is basically impossible most of the time.

0 coins

Do you know if the processing gets delayed if you had to verify by mail instead of phone? Still waiting after sending my docs in March 😩

0 coins

Mail verification typically adds 2-3 weeks to the timeline because they have to manually process everything. If you've waited since March, definitely call them - you should have had movement by now.

If you're trying to understand what's really going on with your transcripts, I highly recommend checking out taxr.ai instead of just guessing or relying on forum posts. I was in a similar situation with identity verification issues and spent WEEKS trying to interpret all those codes and dates on my transcript. Then someone recommended taxr.ai and it literally explained everything - exactly what was happening with my return, what each code meant specifically for MY situation, and what my next steps should be. It saved me so much time and stress! https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

0 coins

It's WAY more than just reading transcripts. It analyzes all your specific codes and dates together, explains what's actually happening with your return, gives you estimated timelines based on your situation, and tells you what you need to do next. It even explained why my return was flagged for ID verification in the first place, which the IRS agent never mentioned! I'm telling everyone I know about it now because it's so much better than guessing or waiting on hold for hours.

another tax tool? seems sketchy tbh 🤔

You guys I finally tried taxr.ai and WOW - I'm blown away! It actually showed me that my identity verification was only partially processed and I needed to submit one more form. Nothing on the IRS site indicated this! Already submitted the missing info and my transcript updated 3 days later. This tool is INCREDIBLE for understanding what's actually happening with your return!

After waiting for 7 weeks with my transcript frozen after ID verification, I was going insane trying to get through to the IRS. Finally used claimyr.com to get a callback and spoke to an agent within 2 hours. Found out they needed one more document that was never mentioned in their letter! Once I provided that, my refund was released the next week. Honestly, spending a little money on the calling service was worth every penny considering I was waiting on a $4900 refund.

0 coins

how does that service work? ive been calling for weeks and cant get a human

0 coins

It basically navigates all the IRS phone menus for you and holds your place in line. When they're about to connect you with an agent, you get a call back. Saved me like 3+ hours of hold time and frustration. Talking to a real person got everything sorted out in 15 minutes - best decision I made after stressing for weeks!

0 coins

is this even real or just some scam to get ur info? 🧐

0 coins

Nah it's just a calling service - they don't ask for any tax info or personal details. They just get you through to an IRS agent so YOU can talk to them directly. After spending literally 17+ hours trying to call myself over 3 weeks, getting a callback in 2 hours was worth every penny.

I went thru the same thing back in March and STILL don't have my refund. Agent told me 9 weeks max and here I am 13 weeks later with nothing. Called again last week and they say "it's still processing" whatever that means. The whole system is broken.

0 coins

Try calling the Taxpayer Advocate Service. After 13 weeks you definitely qualify for hardship assistance.

0 coins

I tried TAS too, they're not taking new cases in my state because of "high volume" 🙄 It's like a never ending cycle of bureaucracy

0 coins

When the agent said 2-9 weeks, did he give you any indication of why the timeframe varies so much? I'm in a similar situation and was told 2-9 weeks back on June 2, still nothing.

0 coins

Good for you calling them! I did the same thing in April and was also told 2-9 weeks. My refund was actually deposited exactly 21 days later. So don't lose hope, sometimes its faster than they say.

0 coins

Lucky you! I did verification in February and didn't see my refund until the first week of May 😫

0 coins

Yeah I know I got lucky! I think it depends on what codes are on your transcript and how complicated your return is. Mine was super simple.

0 coins

wait, how did you actually get through to someone at the IRS? ive been trying for WEEKS and always get the "due to high call volume" message and they hang up! what number did you call?

0 coins

Not OP, but I've had luck calling right when they open at 7am Eastern. Still had to wait on hold for 45 mins but at least they didn't hang up on me.

0 coins

I've had success using claimyr.com to reach IRS agents. It costs a bit but honestly saved me hours of frustration and multiple days of failed call attempts. Got a callback within 90 minutes when I was trying for 3 weeks on my own.

0 coins

Thanks! I'm desperate enough to try anything at this point...

0 coins

Did the agent tell you to expect any additional letters or notices? I'm curious because after I did phone verification they didn't send any confirmation, so I have no proof it actually happened. Feeling nervous.

0 coins

Ugh the ID verification process is such a joke. I had to do mine twice because they "lost" my first submission. And then had to verify AGAIN over the phone because apparently their system didn't save something. The whole process took me 4 months to get my refund. The IRS is so understaffed its pathetic.

0 coins

That's awful. Did you end up getting any interest on your refund since it was delayed so long?

0 coins

Yeah I did actually get interest! It was like $47 on a $3100 refund. Not much but better than nothing I guess.

0 coins

They really need to fix the entire process. My dad has had his identity stolen twice for tax fraud and now has to verify EVERY year even though he's retired and files the same exact return. It's ridiculous.

0 coins

Pro tip: Make sure you document EVERYTHING. Date, time, who you spoke with (get employee ID if possible), and what they told you. Just in case you need to prove you did the verification later. Ask them to put notes on your account too.

0 coins

Good idea, thanks. The agent gave me his ID number and I wrote down the date and time of the call. Hopefully won't need it but better safe than sorry.

I was struggling to understand my transcript until I tried taxr.ai - absolutely game changing! It explained all my codes, told me exactly what was happening with my ID verification, and gave me a real timeline estimate that turned out to be spot on. Honestly saved me so much stress trying to decipher all those cryptic codes and dates.

0 coins

I actually had to go through this entire process last year. Id verification then waiting then calling then another verification. When they finally approved it they said 9 weeks and I got my refund in exactly 11 days lol. The time estimates they give are all over the place.

0 coins

same!! they told me 6-8 weeks and it showed up in 5 days. its like they just make up these timeframes 🤣

0 coins

Can I ask what number you called to reach them? I'm in the same boat (verified identity online 5/30) and still nothing on my transcript.

0 coins

Not OP but I had to use claimyr.com after trying for 3 weeks to get through on my own. Totally worth it when you're waiting on thousands of dollars and can't get anyone on the phone. Got a callback in under 2 hours and resolved my issue same day.

0 coins

anyone else notice how the IRS keeps saying they're "modernizing" but somehow the verification process gets MORE complicated every year? 🤡

0 coins

For real!! My sister works at a bank and says its wild how the IRS still uses fax machines for certain processes in 2025 lmao

0 coins

To be fair, with all the identity theft happening, I'd rather have more security than less. But yeah their tech is from the stone age 💀

0 coins

Did you see any transcript codes before you called? I'm trying to figure out if there's any way to know from the transcript alone if they need identity verification without having to call.

0 coins

Usually code 570 followed by 971 can mean verification needed. But honestly I was going crazy trying to figure out what all the codes meant until I used taxr.ai - it spelled everything out in plain english and even showed me what was likely to happen next based on the specific pattern of codes. Saved me hours of googling and guessing!

This whole ID verification thing is a scam by the government to hold onto our money longer. They've had my $3241 refund since February and keep making up excuses. Now it's "identity verification" even though they've known me for 20+ years. Ridiculous.

0 coins

You realize they pay you interest when they delay your refund past a certain date right?

0 coins

Yeah a whopping 3% when inflation is way higher. Their "interest" doesn't even cover what I lose by not having MY money for 6+ months.

0 coins

The ID verification is to prevent fraud tho. My cousin had someone try to file a return using his info last year. Rather deal with the hassle than have my refund stolen 🤷‍♂️

0 coins

Reading all these comments about waiting makes me so anxious. I'm 3 weeks post-verification with nothing happening. I'm buying a house and need this refund for closing costs. Anyone know if I can get them to expedite for hardship?
