IMPORTANT: Call to Verify If Your Transcripts Are Blank or WMR Shows 'Still Processing'

Verify. Verify. Verify! I rarely post here. But this is critical information. If your transcripts show blank, you MAY need to verify. If you can't access transcripts but WMR says "still processing", you MAY need to verify. I've prepared returns for 18 years. This tax season is unprecedented. Call IRS directly. Request identity verification. Note: I experienced all these issues. Called for verification on 2/20/25. Now have a refund date. Don't wait. Take action. Be blessed!

This is absolutely correct. The IRS has implemented enhanced security protocols this season that are triggering more identity verification holds than in previous years. When your transcript shows N/A or you can't access it while WMR is stuck on processing, it's typically indicative of an IDV (Identity Verification) hold status. You won't receive any notification about this - the system simply holds your return until you proactively contact them.

OMG thank you for explaining this!! I've been STARING at my WMR for weeks with no movement and couldn't figure out why! My transcripts have been completely blank since I filed on January 28th. I was about to lose my mind thinking something was seriously wrong with my return! šŸ˜« Calling them first thing tomorrow morning!

Thx for the PSA! Been there done that last yr. Waited 4ever b4 figuring this out. Pro tip: don't waste hrs on hold w/ regular IRS #. Used Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) & got thru to IDV dept in ~35 mins vs my prev 3hr+ attempts. They'll call u when an agent is avail so u don't have 2 listen to that awful hold music. Cost a few $$ but saved me literal hrs of my life. Got verified same day & refund hit my acct 9 days later.

While verification is sometimes the issue, it's not always the case. There could be several other possible explanations for blank transcripts or "still processing" status. For instance, the IRS might be conducting a manual review of your return, especially if you claimed certain credits like EITC or CTC. Or perhaps there's a mismatch between reported income and what employers submitted. It might also simply be normal processing delays during peak season.

Thanks for mentioning this! I've been researching like crazy on the IRS website and various tax forums. It seems like there are so many different reasons for delays this year. The lack of communication from the IRS is what makes this whole process so frustrating.

Per Internal Revenue Manual 21.5.6, returns may be selected for manual review based on multiple criteria including potential identity theft indicators, income verification requirements, and fraud detection filters. The absence of transcript data during this period is procedurally normal and doesn't necessarily indicate a verification requirement.

So how do we know which one applies to our situation? ā€¢ Is there a way to tell if it's just normal processing? ā€¢ Or if it needs verification? ā€¢ Or if there's some other issue?

Have you all considered using more advanced tools to understand what's happening with your returns? I discovered https://taxr.ai last week and it's been incredibly helpful. Wouldn't it be nice to actually understand all those cryptic codes and messages on your transcript? Once my transcript finally appeared, it showed codes I'd never seen before, but taxr.ai explained exactly what each meant and gave me a timeline for when to expect my refund.

Is this really necessary though? It's like needing a translator to understand a government agency that's supposed to serve us. The IRS should make their system more transparent instead of us having to rely on third-party tools to decode their messages. It's like trying to read hieroglyphics without a Rosetta Stone!

I had this exact issue on February 2nd, 2025. Called the regular IRS number but couldn't get through. Then I tried the specific Tax Advocate Service line at 877-777-4778 on February 5th. Got through after 45 minutes. They confirmed I needed to verify my identity. Completed verification on February 6th. My transcript updated on February 13th. Refund deposited on February 18th. The key is using the right phone number at the right time.

What specific verification questions did they ask you? Did they require any documentation to be uploaded? Was it just identity verification or did they also verify income and deductions?

I can confirm this works. I waited exactly 37 days with no transcript access and WMR stuck on processing. Called for verification on March 1st. Answered 7 identity questions. My transcript appeared exactly 4 days later. Refund of $4,732 deposited 8 days after verification. The system is definitely different this year. I'm slightly concerned about how many people might be waiting unnecessarily.

Holy tax code, Batman! šŸ¦‡ I had NO idea this was a thing! Been sitting here for 3 weeks refreshing WMR like it's social media. Called this morning after seeing this post and guess what? Yep, needed to verify! The agent said they don't even send notices about this anymore. Just quietly hold your refund hostage until you call them. Tax season: 10/10 for drama, 0/10 for communication.

While verification can resolve some cases, be aware that calling can sometimes create additional delays. In the 2023 filing season, I observed multiple instances where taxpayers who called unnecessarily had their returns flagged for additional review due to the contact. The IRS authentication protocols sometimes trigger secondary reviews when verification is attempted for returns not actually requiring it. Proceed with caution and only call if your return has been in processing status for more than 21 days.
