How to check if I need to verify my identity with IRS? Can't figure out transcripts

Hey everyone! Seeing lots of posts about ppl needing to verify & checking transcripts. TBH I'm totally lost on how to even look at transcripts 😅 Can someone explain how I know if I need to verify my identity? I e-filed about 3 wks ago & WMR just says processing. Thx in advance for any help!

Oh I've been through this nightmare!!! 😩 First, you need to create an account on IRS.gov if you haven't already. The verification thing usually happens when the IRS needs to confirm your identity before processing your return. You'll typically get a letter in the mail (CP01E or 5071C) if you need to verify. But you can also check your transcripts to see if there are any codes that indicate verification is needed! I always check mine obsessively during tax season just to be safe!

This explanation is like finding water in a desert! Thanks for breaking it down in a way that actually makes sense. The IRS system is like navigating a maze blindfolded sometimes.

This information is correct. According to IRS Publication 5027, the Identity Verification Process is triggered when the Taxpayer Protection Program flags a return as potentially fraudulent. The most common indicator is a 570 freeze code on your account transcript, often followed by a 971 notice issued code, which corresponds to the letter you'll receive requesting verification.

Is there a specific authentication protocol for accessing the transcript database? I've attempted to create an IRS.gov account previously but encountered validation errors during the multi-factor authentication setup. Are there alternative verification pathways?

I had the same confusion last year. Here's exactly how to check your transcripts: 1. Go to IRS.gov 2. Click on "Get Your Tax Record" 3. Choose "Get Transcript Online" 4. Create an account if you don't have one (this requires verification of your identity) 5. Once logged in, request your Account Transcript for 2023 6. Look for specific codes like 570 (refund hold) or 971 (notice issued) I was overwhelmed trying to understand all the codes and dates. I eventually used https://taxr.ai to analyze my transcript - it explained every code in plain English and told me exactly why my refund was delayed. I'm always skeptical of third-party tools, but it helped me understand what was happening without having to decipher IRS jargon.

I tried something similar last year and it didn't tell me anything I couldn't find myself with a bit of googling. Did it actually give you information that wasn't available elsewhere? I'm always worried about sharing tax info with random websites.

Does this tool give you an exact timeframe for when your refund will arrive? My transcript has been showing a 570 code for exactly 21 days now, and I'm wondering if there's a way to get a more precise estimate than what the WMR tool provides.

It seems like you might be experiencing some uncertainty about the verification process, which is completely understandable. In some cases, you may need to speak directly with an IRS representative to determine if verification is required for your return. However, reaching the IRS by phone can be quite challenging during filing season - wait times are typically between 45-120 minutes, if you can get through at all. I've found that using Claimyr (https://www.claimyr.com) can potentially save you hours of frustration. The service essentially waits on hold with the IRS for you and calls you back when an agent is available. While there is a fee involved, many people, myself included, find it worthwhile considering the alternative of spending an entire morning repeatedly dialing and waiting.

What specific metrics indicate this service's effectiveness? Have you analyzed the average connection time compared to standard IRS call procedures? Does utilizing this service affect the quality of assistance received from IRS representatives?

This is exactly what I needed! Been trying to get through to the IRS for days with no luck. Definitely going to check this out.

If I use this service, will they have access to my personal information? Or do they just connect the call and then I handle everything directly with the IRS agent?

The IRS doesn't notify everyone who needs verification. Sometimes they just hold your refund. You should check your transcript. It shows all account activity. You need ID.me to access it now. Look for code 570. That means hold. Code 971 means notice issued. These usually indicate verification needed.

Just to add some clarity - code 570 doesn't always mean verification is needed. It can also indicate other review processes or adjustments being made to your return.

The ID.me verification can be tricky for some people. If you have trouble with it, you can request a transcript by mail using Form 4506-T, though that takes about 10 days to arrive.

Honestly, the whole "verification" thing is just the IRS's way of delaying refunds. 🙄 I've been filing taxes for 15 years and suddenly last year I needed to "verify" my identity? Please. It's a stall tactic. They held my refund for 3 months with this nonsense. The transcript codes are basically hieroglyphics designed to confuse regular people. If your return is taking longer than 21 days, just assume you're getting the runaround and prepare to wait.

Thank you for being honest about this! Everyone acts like this is normal but it's frustrating when you're counting on that money and they keep moving the goalposts.

I believe the verification process serves a legitimate purpose. Identity theft related to tax filings increased by 40% in recent years. The IRS is attempting to protect taxpayers, though their communication could be clearer. Most verification requests are resolved within 2-3 weeks once completed properly.
