WMR Keeps Switching Between 'Being Processed' and 'Verification Required' - Transcript Notification Gone

Can someone please help? I verified online on March 22nd and it passed me. I looked on transcripts yesterday and the verification notification is off my screen. WMR changed yesterday to one bar saying it was being processed, which was progress! But then this morning (March 23rd) I woke up and checked WMR again, and it's now back on 'action required' on the verification screen again. But when I check my transcripts, the notification is still gone. I'm so confused about what's happening with our first joint return since getting married. Really want to understand what's going on!

This happened to me last month! I verified on February 15th, then WMR showed processing for about 3 days, then flipped back to verification needed. I was freaking out, but my transcript also showed the verification notice was gone. Turns out it was just the WMR tool being glitchy. My refund was deposited exactly 9 days after the verification disappeared from my transcript, even though WMR kept flip-flopping. So relieved when it finally showed up! The transcript is the more accurate indicator in my experience.

So you're saying we should trust the transcript over WMR? I've been checking both daily and getting different messages. It's driving me crazy!

I'm not entirely convinced this is just a glitch. Couldn't it mean they need additional verification? I've heard of people having to verify twice in some cases.

Same rollercoaster ride over here! My WMR was playing ping-pong between messages for two weeks straight. 😂 Called the IRS after pulling my hair out and the agent literally said "oh don't worry about that, our systems don't talk to each other properly" - which was both reassuring and concerning! Got my refund despite the WMR confusion.

Did you notice any specific codes on your transcript when this was happening? Were there any 570/971 combinations or did it go straight to 846?

Oh no! I'm sorry you're dealing with this frustrating situation! 😫 The IRS systems don't always sync properly between the transcript database and the Where's My Refund tool. Since your transcript no longer shows the verification notice, that's the more reliable indicator. The WMR tool could take 24-72 hours to catch up with the actual status in their main system. I'd suggest checking both again tomorrow, but putting more weight on what the transcript shows. It's so nerve-wracking when these systems don't align!

I'm racing against time to get my refund before my vacation next week, and had a similar issue. My WMR flipped back and forth between messages way more often than my friend's did. In my case, the transcript was definitely more accurate. My refund came through about 10 days after the verification notice disappeared from my transcript, even though WMR was still showing verification needed on the day the money hit my account! Compared to previous years, this seems to be happening more frequently in 2024.

If you're really concerned and want definitive answers, I'd recommend calling the IRS directly. But as someone who tried that route last week, good luck getting through! I spent 3 hours on hold before getting disconnected. Then I found Claimyr (https://www.claimyr.com) which got me connected to an actual IRS agent in about 20 minutes. According to the IRS website and forums, the transcript is generally more accurate than WMR. Claimyr costs a bit, but saved me hours of frustration and confirmed my refund was actually processing despite the WMR glitches.

I'm concerned this might indicate a potential issue with your return. Here's what I would do step-by-step: 1. First, take screenshots of both your WMR and transcript status today 2. Check again tomorrow morning to see if they've synchronized 3. If still showing different statuses after 48 hours, you might need to take action 4. Call the IRS verification department at the number provided in any letters you received 5. Have your return information ready when you call This disconnect between systems could potentially delay your refund further, and I'd hate for that to happen with your first joint return.

When you mention the verification department, do you mean the Identity Verification Service? Or is there a specific department that handles these system discrepancies?

I called on March 4th with a similar issue and was told that as long as the transcript shows the verification notice is gone, you're good. The WMR tool pulls from a secondary database that updates less frequently than the master file that powers the transcript system.

WMR is notoriously unreliable. Transcript is better. I had this exact issue. Kept flipping back and forth. Got my refund anyway. Don't panic. System glitch happens all the time. Just keep checking transcript daily.

Have you checked if there are any specific codes on your transcript? The fact that the verification notice is gone is a good sign, but I'm curious if you see any 570, 971, or 846 codes with specific dates attached to them? Those would tell us exactly where you are in the process. In my experience, refunds typically come 7-21 days after verification is completed, with an average of 12 days.

This appears to be what's known as a CSED synchronization issue (Collection Statute Expiration Date). The WMR tool and the transcript database operate on different update cycles. The IDRS (Integrated Data Retrieval System) that powers your transcript is the primary system of record, while WMR is a secondary customer-facing tool. Did you file with any specific credits like CTC or EITC that might have triggered additional processing?

According to IRM 21.4.1.3 (Internal Revenue Manual), transcript data takes precedence over WMR indicators. I suggest checking your account transcript rather than just the return transcript. The account transcript will show transaction codes that indicate exactly where you are in the process. You might also consider creating an online account at ID.me if you haven't already, as it provides more detailed access to your tax information than the basic transcript request tool.
