Transcript shows no return filed but WMR says received? Still stuck on PATH hold

Has anyone else experienced this weird discrepancy? I submitted my tax return back in early February 2024 and got confirmation that it was accepted. When I check Where's My Refund, it shows they received my return and it's being processed. But when I look at my transcript online, there's no record showing I filed at all! It still shows N/A for 2023. I claimed EITC so I know I'm under the PATH Act hold, but shouldn't my transcript at least show the return was filed? It's been almost 6 weeks now and I'm getting nervous about my refund. Last year everything updated at the same time. Anyone know what's going on?

This is actually pretty common, especially early in the filing season with PATH Act claims. The IRS systems don't always sync up right away. Your return is likely in the processing queue but hasn't been fully processed to the point where it would appear on your transcript. Your transcript will typically update with a 150 tax return filed code once they complete the initial processing. Until then, it can show N/A even though WMR shows received. The PATH Act hold means they won't release EITC/ACTC refunds until after February 15th, but processing delays have been pushing many returns past that date anyway. I'd recommend checking your transcript weekly (they typically update on Fridays). Once you see a 150 code and an 846 code with a date, that's when your refund will be issued. If nothing changes by mid-March, you might want to call the IRS directly.

Thanks for explaining! That's a relief to hear it's common. How much longer do you think I should wait before getting worried?

I'd give it until early April before really worrying. The IRS is notoriously slow, especially with PATH Act returns. If nothing by then, consider calling.

This happened to me last year and my transcript didn't update until March 17th even though I filed in January. PATH Act returns are always slower.

Stop trying to decipher this stuff on your own! I wasted SO MUCH time last year obsessing over transcript codes and WMR messages. This year I used taxr.ai and it actually explained everything in plain English. It analyzed my transcript, showed me exactly what stage my return was in, and gave me a timeline estimate. Way better than playing detective and piecing together forum posts! Check it out: https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It's honestly amazing. You upload your transcript and it breaks everything down - explains all the codes, tells you if there are any issues, and gives you a personalized timeline. It caught a potential review flag on mine that I wouldn't have noticed. Saved me weeks of anxiety!

Just tried taxr.ai and WOW! It told me exactly why my refund was delayed and when to expect it. So much better than the cryptic IRS messages. Literally changed my tax season experience completely. 10/10 recommend!!

another pay service? does it actually help or just tell you what you already know? 🙄

It's not just regurgitating info - it actually interprets everything. Like when I had code 570 and 971, I was freaking out, but taxr.ai explained it was just a standard review and not an audit. Saved me tons of stress!

After 3 weeks of WMR showing received but my transcript still saying N/A, I got desperate and used claimyr.com to finally talk to a human at the IRS. Got through to an agent in about 45 minutes when I'd been trying for days on my own with no luck. The agent confirmed my return was in processing but flagged for review due to income verification. Worth every penny to stop the anxiety of not knowing what was happening.

does that calling service actually work? seems sketchy to pay for something that should be free

I thought the same thing but I was at my wits end after trying to call the IRS for a week straight. It absolutely works - they navigate all the phone menus and hold times for you, then call you when an agent is ready. Saved me hours of frustration and hold music.

what kind of info do they need from you to make it work?

Nothing sensitive - just your phone number so they can call you back when they reach an agent. You handle the actual conversation with the IRS yourself.

I tried calling the IRS 11 times befor I gave up and used claimyr. Best decision ever. Talking to an agent got me my refund released within 48 hours after weeks of waiting.

Im in the EXACT same situation! Filed February 2nd, WMR says received and PATH act message, but transcript shows N/A. This is my 3rd week checking and nothing has changed. So frustrating.

Whatever you do, DO NOT call the IRS right now unless you absolutely have to. I just wasted 3 hours on hold only to have them tell me "your return is still processing" which I already knew from WMR. They're swamped and won't give any additional info if you're still within normal processing times.

Agreed! Complete waste of time calling unless you're well outside normal processing times (like 8+ weeks). They just read the same script.

This happens because the different IRS systems don't sync in real time. WMR updates first when they initially receive your return, but transcripts only update once they start actual processing work on it. With PATH Act returns (EITC/ACTC), they often batch process them closer to the February 15th release date, which explains why your transcript still shows N/A. I've seen returns get stuck in this status anywhere from 2-6 weeks. As long as WMR doesn't give an error message, you're probably fine.

the IRS is so broken its not even funny 🤦‍♀️ how do they expect us to understand whats going on when there own systems don't talk to eachother? and then they penalize US when something goes wrong lol 😂

Fr fr. And then they have the nerve to charge interest when THEY make mistakes. Make it make sense 🤡

RIGHT?! And you try calling them and spend 3 hours on hold just to be told "keep waiting" like thanks for nothing 😤

Check the IRS2Go app. Sometimes it shows slightly different info than the WMR website. Also, did you create an online account on the IRS website to view your transcript? Sometimes the public transcript tool has issues.

Yep, I'm checking with my IRS online account. The IRS2Go app shows the same as WMR for me. I'll keep checking both, thanks!

I always file early (january) and my WMR updates before my transcript each year. My transcript didnt update until the first friday after feb 15th even though WMR showed received almost immediately after filing. Its just how the system works unfortunately.

Last time this happened to me it was because they were verifying my identity. Had to go through the whole ID.me process. Might want to check if you need to verify your identity on the IRS portal.

I can log into my IRS account just fine, so I think my identity is verified? Unless there's another step I'm missing.

If you can log in, you're good. Some people get a special notice to verify even when they can log in, but it doesn't sound like your case.

I was losing my mind with this same issue last month! Had to wait over 3 weeks from accepted to finally seeing my transcript update. Then boom, got my refund 8 days later. The anxiety is real tho, especially when you're counting on that money.

After wasting hours trying to figure out why my transcript and WMR were showing different things, I tried taxr.ai and it instantly showed me that my return was in the verification queue (something neither WMR nor my transcript clearly indicated). It even predicted my release date which turned out to be spot on! https://taxr.ai has been a lifesaver during tax season.

Honestly, considering the peace of mind it gave me after weeks of stress, it was the best money I've spent this tax season. I was about to pay my tax preparer a consultation fee just to explain my transcript - this was way more detailed and way less expensive.

The different IRS systems (WMR, transcripts, account) run on different update schedules. IT'S TOTALLY NORMAL. Don't panic. Your money isn't lost. The IRS is just... the IRS.

Pro tip: Friday night/Saturday morning is when most transcripts update. Check yours every Saturday morning and you'll eventually see movement. That's when they run their weekly batch processing.

Thank you! I'll try checking Saturday mornings instead of obsessively refreshing every day lol

Struggling with similar issues for weeks, I finally broke down and tried claimyr.com. Got connected to an IRS agent after trying for days on my own with no success. The agent actually gave me specific info about why my refund was delayed (verification issue they never told me about!) and I was able to resolve it. If you need actual answers instead of the runaround, it's worth trying.

About 30 minutes total. Wayyyyy better than the 3+ hours I wasted trying to call myself (and never even reaching a person).

I was skeptical too, but it worked exactly as promised. They navigate the phone system and wait on hold, then call you when they reach an agent. Talking to an actual human at the IRS resolved my issue in minutes after weeks of stress.
