How to check if NY unemployment approved my 2019 tax return claim?

Hey everyone, I filed for unemployment in NY and needed to submit my 2019 tax return as part of my claim. I didn't do it myself - I had my tax guy send it directly to the unemployment office about 2 weeks ago. How do I actually know if they received it and approved it? I keep checking my account but don't see any updates. Getting kinda worried since I need these benefits asap. Anyone know how long this usually takes or where I should be looking for confirmation?

You need to check your online account under 'Documents' section. Look for a status update that says 'Received' or 'Pending Review' next to your 2019 tax document submission. If it's been approved, it should say 'Approved' or sometimes 'Verified'. It typically takes 7-10 business days for them to process tax documents in the NY system, but it can take longer during high volume periods.

Thanks! I checked the Documents section but don't see anything about my tax return specifically. There's a bunch of other stuff in there but nothing mentioning my 2019 taxes. Should I call them or wait longer?

No, I didn't get any email... my tax guy just said he sent it. Maybe I should follow up with him first to make sure he actually sent it to the right place.

I had the EXACT same issue last month!!! My accountant said he sent my tax docs but the DOL had NO RECORD of receiving them. Wasted 3 WEEKS waiting for something that never arrived. When I finally got through on the phone they told me they never received anything!!! Had to resend everything myself through the message portal and upload it directly. Don't trust anyone else to send your stuff - do it yourself!!

Omg that's exactly what I'm worried about... I'll try calling tomorrow to see if they even have it. Don't want to wait another month just to find out they never got it in the first place.

Just to clarify something important: for NY unemployment, if you had someone submit tax documents on your behalf, you should have received a confirmation number or email. Without that, there's no guarantee the documents were actually received by NYSDOL. If you don't see any status updates in your online account after 10 business days, you should: 1. Contact your tax preparer and request proof of submission 2. Try to upload the documents yourself through your online account 3. Call the unemployment office to confirm receipt The most reliable method is uploading through your own account where you'll get an immediate confirmation number.

Thank you for the detailed explanation. I'll ask my tax guy for proof of submission tomorrow. If he doesn't have it, I'll upload it myself right away. Really appreciate the help!

I had the same problem with the endless phone waits until someone told me about Claimyr. It's this service that calls NYSDOL for you and connects you when an agent is actually available. Total game changer for me - I got through in about 30 minutes instead of days of trying. Their site is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE Worth it when you absolutely need to talk to someone at unemployment about something important like missing tax documents.

FYI - For 2025 claims, NYSDOL typically processes tax return documentation within 14-21 business days during normal periods. Currently there's a backlog due to the system maintenance they did in March, so processing is taking closer to 25-30 days. The best way to verify receipt is to call the claims center at 1-888-209-8124. Their automated system can tell you if documents have been received even if the online portal hasn't updated yet. Press 2, then 1, then enter your social and PIN when prompted, then select option 4 for document status.

Super helpful info, thank you! I had no idea about the backlog from the March maintenance. That might explain the delay. I'll try the automated system first thing tomorrow.

Ugh that's what I'm afraid of. Can't afford to wait another month right now.

One more thing to consider - sometimes tax documents get flagged for review if there are discrepancies between what's reported on your unemployment application and what appears on your tax return. If there's a significant difference in reported income, the system may hold your claim for manual review, which adds processing time. If possible, check that the income you reported on your unemployment application matches what's on your 2019 return.

That's a really good point. I'm pretty sure the numbers match but I'll double check tonight just to be safe. Thanks for the tip!

UPDATE: I finally got through to someone! Turns out my tax guy sent it to the general tax department email instead of uploading it through the unemployment portal. The agent was able to look it up and confirm they never received anything from him. I'm uploading my tax documents myself right now. Thanks everyone for your help!

Glad you got it sorted out! This is unfortunately common - many tax preparers aren't familiar with the specific requirements for unemployment documentation. Always good to follow up and verify yourself. Hope your claim processes quickly now!

SEE!! Exactly what happened to me! Never trust anyone else to handle this stuff correctly. At least now you know and can fix it!
