NY unemployment denied after filing taxes by mail - tracking info shows wrong
Has anyone had their NY unemployment claim denied because of issues with mailed tax returns? I sent my 2024 tax documents via USPS instead of e-filing about 8 weeks ago, and now I'm worried they got lost in the mail. When I try tracking my tax return status on the NY unemployment portal, it says my information is incorrect. I can't file for benefits without my tax verification going through! The online system keeps rejecting my unemployment application saying 'tax verification pending' but I submitted everything! Should I just resend everything? Anyone deal with this nightmare before?

•Thanks for responding! Did you just wait it out or did you end up calling? I'm seriously stressed because my benefits are on hold until this gets sorted.

This is a common issue with paper-filed documents this year. The NYSDOL and tax systems aren't communicating properly. Here's what you should do: 1. Get a proof of mailing receipt from USPS if you have one 2. Call the NYSDOL at 888-209-8124 to explain the situation 3. Request they manually verify your tax filing status 4. Ask for a temporary override while verification is pending They can typically override the system if you explain that you filed by mail and are waiting for processing. Make sure to have your NY-1099G form handy when you call.

•I've been trying that number for days and can't get through! It either disconnects or puts me on hold forever. Is there any other way to contact them?

•Not everyone can e-file! Some of us have identity verification issues or complex tax situations that require paper filing. The NYSDOL should handle ALL valid submission methods properly instead of penalizing people who file by mail.

I had this exact problem back in February. After weeks of frustration trying to reach someone, I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an agent. Their service connects you with NYSDOL without waiting on hold for hours. They have a video demo showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE Once I got an agent on the phone, they manually verified my tax filing status and processed my claim. The agent told me there's a huge backlog of mailed returns and many aren't being scanned into the system properly. They had to override the system on their end.

•does that actually work? seems sketchy to me

•Yes, it absolutely worked for me. The alternative was waiting weeks more while bills piled up. The agent I spoke with said they're seeing tons of these paper filing issues and they can fix it immediately once you get through to them.

THEY ARE DOING THIS ON PURPOSE!!!! I mailed my taxes in JANUARY and they STILL claim they never received them! Meanwhile they approved my neighbor who e-filed in 5 DAYS!!! The whole system is rigged to DENY benefits and save the state money. They know exactly what they're doing by "losing" paper forms and making the phone lines impossible to get through!!!

•I mean yeah the system sucks but they're not targeting you personally lol. Its just understaffed and outdated.

I was in your situation last month. Here's the thing - when you mail taxes, NYSDOL won't automatically link them to your unemployment claim. It's a different system than e-filing. You need to specifically request a manual verification. What worked for me was visiting my local NYSDOL office in person with: 1. Copy of my tax return 2. USPS mailing receipt 3. My NY unemployment claim number 4. Photo ID The in-person office was able to submit an internal request to connect my mailed return to my unemployment claim. My benefits were approved 5 days later. Their computer systems don't automatically talk to each other like they're supposed to.

•Thank you so much for this detailed info! I do have my USPS receipt. I'll try visiting the local office tomorrow. Really appreciate the help!

To clarify some confusion in this thread: 1. You CANNOT convert a mailed return to an e-file after submission 2. The NYSDOL is currently experiencing a 10-12 week backlog for processing paper documents 3. The tracking system does sometimes show incorrect status for mailed items 4. You DO have the right to request manual verification I strongly recommend either visiting an office in person or getting through on the phone. The paper backlog is substantial this year, and many claims are stuck in this verification limbo.

•10-12 WEEKS?!? That's CRIMINAL! People have bills to pay! This is exactly what I'm talking about - they DELIBERATELY make the paper system slow to discourage claims!

UPDATE: I tried the Claimyr service that someone mentioned earlier, and I actually got through to a real person at NYSDOL! The agent confirmed they received my mailed tax return but it wasn't properly linked to my unemployment claim. She manually verified my tax information and said my claim should be processed within 3-5 business days. Just wanted to update in case anyone else has this same problem. Will post again when/if my benefits actually come through.

this is why i always tell everyone to e-file everything. i haven't mailed a govt form in like 7 years lol

•That's not helpful for people already in this situation. Also, some people HAVE to file by mail due to specific tax situations or identity verification issues. The system should work for everyone regardless of filing method.

FINAL UPDATE: My benefits were approved and I just received my first payment! The agent was right - it took 4 business days after they manually linked my tax return to my unemployment claim. Such a relief. For anyone else dealing with this issue, definitely try to speak with a real person either in person or on the phone. The online system doesn't handle mailed documents well at all.

•Great news! Glad you got it resolved. This is a good reminder for everyone that persistence pays off with these systems.
