Confused about random mail from ny unemployment after filing 1099G weeks ago
So I submitted my 1099G through the online portal back in February using the link they emailed me. Got confirmation and everything seemed fine. But now I'm getting these random letters from NY unemployment department in May? One is just saying they processed my tax form (which I already knew) and another is asking me to verify some info that I already verified online. I'm super confused why they're mailing me stuff 3 months after I handled everything electronically. Anyone else getting weird delayed mail from them? Should I just ignore it since I already did everything online or do I need to respond to these letters?

Same thing happened to me. Filed my 1099G in January and then got like 3 different letters in April. One was just confirming what I already did online, another was asking for verification I already provided, and the third was some vague notice about my claim history. The unemployment system is so broken, they're probably just catching up on paperwork from months ago. I just ignored them since I already did everything they asked for online.

β’Did you ever get anymore mail after you ignored them? I'm worried if I don't respond they'll like suspend my account or something.

β’Nope! Never heard anything else. Pretty sure it's just their systems being slow and out of sync. The online stuff is processed by computers but these letters are probably from some automated batch process that runs wayyyy behind.

β’Yo I got the same stack of mail too! I was freaking out thinking I'd done something wrong. This makes me feel better lol

After spending HOURS trying to reach ny unemployment about similar issues, I finally found a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me a callback with an actual human. Talking to an agent got my confusion cleared up in 10 minutes, and they confirmed the letters were just system delays. It was the only way I could talk to a live agent without losing my mind on hold. Check out this video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

β’is this some kind of ad? π€ like how convenient you just happen to recommend some random service

β’I get the skepticism but nah, just sharing what worked for me after wasting 2 weeks calling myself. Their system calls for you and when it reaches an agent it connects you. I was desperate enough to try anything tbh

β’wait is this actually real? I've spent literally 7 hours on hold this week trying to talk to someone about my claim

β’100% real. I was connected with someone in about 45 minutes when I'd spent days trying before. Unemployment offices hate this one trick lol

β’i used this last month for a different issue with my claim. saved me from throwing my phone out the window after being on hold for 3 hours straight the day before

The NY unemployment system is COMPLETELY BROKEN. I've gotten letters for things I filed 6 months ago. I've gotten duplicate letters on the same day. I've gotten letters telling me to ignore other letters they sent. It's a total clownshow π€‘

Don't ignore the mail!! I made that mistake and ended up having my benefits delayed for 3 weeks because they needed some additional verification. Even if you already did it online, sometimes their systems don't sync up correctly and you need to do things twice. It's stupid but that's how they operate.

β’second this! I ended up having to resubmit forms I'd already done online. Total waste of time but it was the only way to get things moving again.

β’This is what I'm afraid of...guess I'll respond to everything just to be safe

This is normal for NYS unemployment. There systems are completley not connected so the online portal and the mail system run seperately. So even tho you did everything online, the mail system is still going to send you stuff. Its dumb but thats how it works lol. I always do both just to be super safe.

Let me break down what's happening here based on my experience working with government systems (not NY specifically, but similar): The unemployment system actually has multiple separate databases and processing systems that don't communicate well with each other. When you file online, that goes into System A. But the paper mail notifications come from System B. System B might be on a scheduled batch process that runs weekly or monthly, which is why you're getting delayed notifications. Your best course of action is to: 1) Keep copies of EVERYTHING - online confirmations, mail, etc. 2) Respond to mail requests even if redundant 3) If things get confusing, talk to an actual human at unemployment For the last part, don't waste days on hold. I used claimyr.com to get a callback within an hour instead of spending my whole day listening to hold music. Talking to a live agent is honestly the only way to get clear answers about contradictory notices. The system is badly designed but once you understand its quirks, you can navigate it.

β’THIS! The multiple database issue is the core problem. I work in IT and can confirm government systems are often patched together from different decades of technology.

β’Thanks for this detailed explanation. Makes way more sense now why it's so disjointed!

This happened to me too. One thing to check - log into your account online and make sure your contact preferences are set correctly. Sometimes they default back to mail even if you selected email/online.

β’Oh I didn't even think to check that. Will take a look, thanks!

Do NOT ignore those letters!!! Even if you've done everything online, their mail system is separate. My friend ignored some letters thinking he already did everything online and they ended up freezing his account for 'failure to respond' π

The 1099G situation was a mess this year. They sent out thousands with errors and then had to send corrections. Maybe that's what you're seeing? Check if the new forms have different numbers than what you originally filed.
