NY unemployment keeps making me resend documents after approval - anyone else?

Just wondering if anyone else is dealing with this ridiculous situation. I got laid off from my retail job in February and filed for unemployment right away. After waiting almost 4 weeks, I finally got approved in March. They asked for ID verification, bank statements, and my last three pay stubs - which I sent through their portal immediately. Got confirmation emails saying everything was received. But now, 2 months later after already receiving 5 payments, I got this weird email saying I need to provide ALL my documentation again because they "couldn't verify my identity" even though they already approved me and have been paying me! The email looks official with the NY unemployment logo but something feels off about it. They're asking me to send everything to some email address I've never seen before instead of uploading to my account portal. I called the unemployment office and sat on hold for almost 3 hours before giving up. Is this some kind of glitch in their system? A scam? I'm worried if I don't respond they'll cut off my benefits, but I'm also worried about sending my personal info again to some random email address. Has anyone else gotten requests to resend documents after already being approved?

Norman Fraser

YES! This happened to me too! I got approved back in January, was getting payments for about 8 weeks, then suddenly got an email asking for everything again. I thought it was a scam at first but when I logged into my account there was also a message in the inbox there saying the same thing. I ended up sending everything a second time through the portal (NOT to any email) and it resolved after about 10 days. Don't send anything to an email address - that's definitely suspicious. Always use their secure upload in your account.

Thanks for the info! Did your payments stop until you resent everything? That's what I'm worried about most.

Yeah they did pause for about 2 weeks. Super annoying but once I resubmitted they started again and I got backpay for the missed weeks.

This is exactly why the NY unemployment system is complete garbage. They approve you then randomly decide they need to verify you AGAIN. Classic bureaucratic nonsense 🤦‍♂️

After dealing with constant issues trying to reach NY unemployment, I finally got through using claimyr.com - it got me a callback with an actual human agent within 2 hours! The agent confirmed there's been a wave of fraud attempts so they're making random people reverify, but said you should NEVER send docs to an email address. She fixed my issue on the spot and my benefits continued without interruption. Honestly it was the best money I've spent to get this unemployment nightmare resolved quickly. Check out this video about how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

How does this Claimyr thing actually work? Sounds too good to be true tbh

It basically calls unemployment for you and stays on hold, then when a real person answers, it connects them to your phone. Saved me hours of hold music. I was skeptical too but it actually worked!

so another company promising to fix our broken unemployment system? does this actually work or is it just more empty promises? 🙄

I get the skepticism - I felt the same way. But it literally just handles the phone waiting part. You still talk directly to unemployment yourself. Figured I'd share since it saved me from going insane on hold music lol

wait why would i pay someone else when I can just keep calling myself? seems like a waste

Because spending 4+ hours on hold is soul crushing? I'd rather pay a few bucks than waste an entire day listening to that terrible hold music on repeat

Its 100% a scam!!! NY unemployment NEVER asks for docs through email. They always want you to upload through your account portal. There's been a ton of phishing attempts lately. Report the email address to the fraud department ASAP.

That's what I was thinking! But whats confusing me is there's also a message in my actual account portal asking for the same docs. That part seems legit.

Oh thats different then. If its in your actual account portal then yeah you probably do need to resubmit. Just don't send anything to the email address. Use the upload function in your account.

The scammers are getting smarter. They time their phishing emails right when the real system is also asking for documents. That way it seems more legit. Always go directly to the unemployment website, never click links in emails.

Listen up folks, I work in IT security and this is happening EVERYWHERE right now. There's a massive coordinated attack targeting unemployment systems across multiple states. The attackers somehow know when you've been approved and the timing of your payments. They send emails that look identical to official ones but with slightly different email addresses. Some key things to know: 1. NY unemployment will NEVER ask you to email sensitive documents 2. Always log in directly to the official site (type the URL yourself, don't click links) 3. Check for messages in your secure inbox on the portal 4. If you get asked for docs again, call to verify (yes it's a pain in the ass) If you need to actually reach a human at unemployment quickly, the Claimyr service (claimyr.com) actually works pretty well - it calls and waits on hold for you then connects you when a real person answers. Saved me hours of frustration. But most importantly, NEVER send your sensitive documents through regular email! That's just begging for identity theft.

This is super helpful, thank you! I'll definitely use the portal only and ignore that email request.

Since you work in IT security - is there any way to report these phishing attempts? I've gotten 3 in the past month.

Yes! Forward the suspicious emails to phishing@labor.ny.gov and also report them to reportfraud.ftc.gov - both agencies are tracking these attacks.

ny unemployment is such a joke lmao. i've been on it twice in the last 3 years and both times they've pulled this crap. they lose documents, claim they never received stuff, then ask for it all again. and good luck getting anyone on the phone 🙃

They did this to me 3 TIMES!!! I think they're just disorganized and understaffed. Each time I had to resubmit my documents it was like starting the whole process over. The worst part is you can never talk to the same person twice so you get different answers every time. What a nightmare.

Ugh I feel this. I got a different answer from every single person I talked to. One told me to ignore the request, another said I'd lose benefits if I didn't respond immediately. Complete chaos.

Exactly!! How are we supposed to know what to do when they can't even get their story straight? 🤬

This is probably part of their random audit process. I used to work for a different state's unemployment office (not NY) and we would randomly select a percentage of approved claims for additional verification. It's annoying but normal. BUT we would never ask for documents via email, only through the secure portal.

Finally someone who actually knows what they're talking about! Everyone immediately jumps to "it's a scam" but this is standard procedure in most states.

yeah but why approve someone and pay them for months and THEN audit them? seems backwards af to me

It's actually by design. They want to process claims quickly, so they approve based on initial info and then do deeper verification on a random sample later. It's weird but it's how the system works.

DONT RESPOND TO THAT EMAIL!! I got the same one a few weeks ago and called unemployment after waiting forever. They confirmed it was a SCAM and someone was trying to redirect my payments. If you haven't already, change your password immediately!

OMG that's terrifying. I'll change my password right now. Did anything happen to your account?

Luckily I caught it before anything bad happened. But the agent told me they've seen lots of cases where scammers got in and changed direct deposit info. Def change your password and enable 2-factor authentication if you haven't already.

Check the email address VERY carefully. The scammers use domains like labor-ny.gov or ny-labor.gov instead of the real labor.ny.gov. Sometimes it's hard to spot the difference.

I went through something similar in December. Turns out someone had filed a fraudulent claim using some of my information, so they were doing extra verification on my legitimate claim. Took FOREVER to sort out but eventually got fixed. You need to talk to a human though - the automated system can't handle these complex situations.

This 👆 There's been a huge spike in unemployment fraud lately. My cousin works at NYSDOL and says they're drowning in fraud cases.

Try calling right when they open at 8am. That's the only time I've ever been able to get through without a multi-hour wait. Or use claimyr.com - that service actually worked for me after I tried calling myself for days with no luck.

Same thing happend to me!!!! I think theres a gltich in there system because it affected a bunch of people who got approved around the same time as me (February). I ended up having to reuplod everything three times before it finally got resolved. So annoying.

Fernanda Marquez

Ugh that sounds awful. Did your payments stop while you were resubmitting everything?

yeah they did for like 3 weeks 😡 but I got backpay eventually

Thats why i always screenshot EVERYTHING when i submit docs to unemployment. dates, confirmation numbers, everything. they tried to tell me they never got my W2 even tho i had proof i uploaded it. showed them the screenshot and suddenly they "found" it 🙄

FYI - I got the same thing and it was actually legit. Their system had a major glitch in april that lost a bunch of verification documents. Super annoying but I had to resubmit. Just make sure you do it through the secure portal and not by replying to any email.
