Suspicious email asking for my info from NY unemployment - is this fraud?
Got an email yesterday claiming to be from New York unemployment saying I need to fill out some urgent form to verify my identity. The email said something about potential fraud activity detected on my account and I need to complete this verification within 72 hours or my benefits will be suspended. Thing is, I already did ID verification when I first applied for benefits in August. Also, the email address looks kinda off - it's nys-unemployment-verification@labor-nyc.org which doesn't seem like an official government domain. Has anyone else gotten something like this? The form asks for my SSN, DOB, address, and bank account info. I'm really hesitant to fill it out because it seems fishy, but I'm also worried about losing my benefits if it's legitimate. Haven't been able to reach anyone on the phone to confirm.

Do NOT fill that out. 100% a scam. Real NY unemployment emails never come from that domain - should only be from ny.gov addresses. They also won't ask for your full SSN or banking details through email forms. This is a classic phishing attempt.

Thanks for confirming. I was really concerned cause they had some of my info already and the email design looked kinda official. Dodged a bullet!

Yup exactly! The scammers are getting super sophisticated these days. They can make emails look EXACTLY like official ones. Always check the email domain carefully.

I was stuck in this same exact situation. Couldn't get any confirmation about if emails were real or not. Kept trying to call for 3 weeks straight with no luck. Finally tried this service called claimyr.com and they got me connected to an actual human at unemployment in like 30 minutes. Talking to an agent got my $ unlocked so fast and they confirmed those verification emails from non-ny.gov domains are 100% scams. Here's a video explaining how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? I've been trying to get through for almost a month now 😩

Yeah it actually works! Before this I spent literal DAYS on hold. The callback system saves so much time and frustration. Worth trying if you're desperate to talk to someone.

hmm I've been burned by so many of these 'services' before... what makes this different? Like how does it even work without my personal info?

It just makes the calls for you and then connects you when a real person answers. They don't need your personal stuff - they're just the messenger basically. When I got the callback the agent asked me all the verification questions directly.

Report it!! Forward the email to phishing@labor.ny.gov - the dept of labor specifically tells people to send suspicious emails there. I got a similar one a few months ago and they confirmed it was a scam after I reported it.

Just forwarded it! Thanks for the suggestion!

HUGE red flag is them asking for your SSN and bank info through an email form. NYSDOL already has your SSN on file from when you applied. They would never ask for it again through email. And they definitely wouldn't ask for bank details this way.

The domain is the dead giveaway - all official NY state dept emails must end in .ny.gov - anything else is fake. labor-nyc.org is 100% a scam domain. I work in IT and see this stuff all the time.

⬆️ This! I work for another state agency and can confirm ALL official NY state communications come from .ny.gov domains, no exceptions.

Here's what you should do: 1) Do NOT click any links or fill out any forms in that email 2) Forward the entire email with headers to phishing@labor.ny.gov 3) If you're worried about your claim, log in directly through the official NY unemployment website (labor.ny.gov) - never use links in emails 4) If you need to speak to a representative about your claim status but can't get through the regular phone lines, I highly recommend using claimyr.com - it's a service that connects you with an actual DOL agent without the endless hold times 5) Set up direct deposit through your official account if you haven't already to prevent any payment issues 6) Consider placing a fraud alert on your credit reports if you're worried about identity theft This is definitely a phishing attempt. The official DOL will never ask for your full SSN, bank account details, or other sensitive information through email forms. Their official communication will always come from a .ny.gov email address. The increase in unemployment during COVID led to a massive spike in these scams. Stay vigilant and always verify the source before providing any personal information.

Thank you for the comprehensive advice! I've already forwarded it to the phishing email address and I'll check my account directly through the official site.

Legit NY unemployment emails will: - Come from a .ny.gov email address ONLY - Never ask for your full SSN in an email or form - Address you by your full name, not generic terms - Refer to your specific claim - Not have urgent countdown timers (72 hours or your benefits will be suspended) Also, when in doubt, call them directly using the number on their official website - not any number in the suspicious email.

^^^^ THIS. Also they already verified you when you applied so they don't need to do it again unless you specifically requested something that would trigger reverification.

I went through this EXACT same thing! Got an email claiming there was fraud and i needed to verify my identity ASAP. Turned out to be a scam. If you need to verify anything with NY unemployment, just log in directly to your account through their official website and check your messages there.

These scams spike whenever there's news about extra benefits or extensions. The scammers know people are desperate and worried about their money 😤

LOL the NY unemployment system can barely send correct emails about your actual claim, let alone sophisticated fraud alerts. If they were really that on top of things we wouldn't be waiting months for payments 💯

After you report it to phishing@labor.ny.gov, call the actual unemployment office to make sure your account is safe. Getting through is a NIGHTMARE but worth it for peace of mind. I had to call 46 times in one day before getting through last month.

only 46 times? amateur numbers lol. I called 112 times over 3 days before getting a human 💀

Both of you could have saved so much time using claimyr.com - it just calls for you and connects when there's a human. Way better than manually redialing hundreds of times.

The real tragedy here is that NY unemployment is so impossible to contact that we cant even verify if communication from them is legitimate or not. The whole system is broken beyond belief.
