NY unemployment sent text about account security - is this legit or another scam?

I got a text message and email from NY unemployment today warning about identity theft and account security measures. The text says they're implementing new verification steps to protect accounts from fraud. It asks me to log in through their portal to confirm my identity by uploading documents. I'm really nervous about doing this because I've heard so many scam stories lately. The text came from a 5-digit number and the email looks official with their logo, but these days scammers are getting so sophisticated. I haven't had any issues with my claim yet - been receiving payments normally since I got laid off in August when my company downsized. The message says I need to complete verification within 10 days or my benefits might be suspended. Has anyone else received this? Is this actually legitimate or should I ignore it? I don't want to lose my benefits but also don't want to get scammed.

I got the same text yesterday! I called the official unemployment number (not the one from the text) and after waiting for like 2 hours they confirmed it's actually legitimate. They're doing a massive security update because of all the fraud happening. Just make sure you go directly to the official website and NOT click any links in the text.

Thank you so much! I was freaking out thinking it was another scam. How did you ever get through on the phone? I've tried calling so many times and never get a human.

Honestly it was a nightmare getting through! I started calling at 7:58am right before they opened and still had to wait forever. It's ridiculous how hard they make it to talk to someone 🙄

After struggling with similar issues, I discovered claimyr.com and it totally changed my experience with NY unemployment. They called on my behalf, stayed on hold, and transferred a live agent directly to my phone. Talking to a real person got my account issues resolved in one call and my benefits started flowing again. Absolutely worth it after weeks of frustration and unanswered calls! Check out this video that explains how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

sounds too good to be true...does this actually work? i've been trying to get through for almost a month now 😩

It 100% worked for me! After trying for 3 weeks to reach someone, I used it and got a callback with an agent in about 2 hours. Talking to the agent got my benefits unlocked that same day. Best decision I made during this whole unemployment nightmare.

another unemployment 'miracle solution'? yeah right. what's the catch here? 🙄

No catch - they just handle the calling and waiting on hold part. You still talk directly to the unemployment office yourself when they transfer the call. Saved me days of redial hell.

i just checked out their site, seems like they just save you from the hold time? might try this since ive literally spent HOURS redailing that stupid number

BE CAREFUL!!! There are tons of unemployment scams going around. I'd be really suspicious of any text asking for documents or verification. Even if it looks legit, scammers are getting better at making fake sites that look identical to the real DOL site. Call the official number listed on the ny.gov website (NOT from the text) to confirm before you do anything.

This! My cousin almost got scammed last month with something similar. The fake website looked EXACTLY like the real one.

yep 💯 they got my neighbor whos not tech savvy. They wiped out her entire account in like a day. These scammers are getting crazy sophisticated

That's exactly what I'm worried about! There have been so many scams lately it's hard to know what's real anymore.

I've had three of these messages over the past 2 months. The first one was legit, sent from NYSDOL about account security updates. The second two were scams with links to fake sites trying to steal my info. If you're ever unsure, just go directly to the official unemployment website by typing the address yourself or through a bookmark. Never click links from texts or emails.

Theres actually a official notice about this on the ny unemployment website right now. They ARE doing a security upgrade and sending texts/emails to people. But always access your account directly through the official site not by clicking any links. I took screenshots of the official notice if anyone wants me to share it.

can you share the screenshots? I didn't see anything about this on the site

Sure! Just DMed you the screenshots. It's on their homepage under 'Important Notices' but you have to scroll down a bit.

I can confirm this is real. I spoke to someone at NYSDOL who verified they're doing a security upgrade due to increased fraud attempts.

Looks like I'm in the minority here, but I just ignored a similar message last month and nothing happened to my benefits. Still getting paid every week like normal. The unemployment system is so messed up I doubt they'd actually cut people off that easily. 🤷‍♂️

Careful with that approach! My benefits got suspended for 3 weeks because I ignored what I thought was a scam but turned out to be a real verification request. Not worth the risk imo.

damn really? maybe I just got lucky then. the whole system is such a mess.

Here's what I've learned after dealing with NY unemployment for 7 freaking months: 1) NEVER click links in texts/emails claiming to be from unemployment - go directly to the official site 2) If you're unsure about something, you NEED to talk to an agent 3) The regular phone number is basically useless - I spent 4+ hours a day for a week trying to get through 4) The ONLY way I finally got help was using claimyr.com - they connected me with an agent who confirmed which communications were legitimate 5) Take screenshots of EVERYTHING and keep notes of who you talk to 6) If you need to upload documents, only do it through your established account on the official site Trust me, getting actual confirmation from a human at unemployment is worth it. The claimyr service had an agent on my phone within hours after I spent weeks getting nowhere.

I work in IT security (not for NYSDOL) and here's what you need to know: there IS a legitimate security upgrade happening right now with NY unemployment. But scammers know this too and are sending out fake messages to take advantage of the confusion. The real messages will NEVER ask you to click a link in a text/email - they'll just direct you to log into your account normally.

LunarLegend

This is great info. Do you know if they're requiring everyone to verify or just certain people?

0 coins

-

21d

Emma Davis

From what I understand, they're rolling it out in phases - not everyone will get the notification at once. They're prioritizing accounts that show certain patterns (like multiple logins from different devices/locations).

The official notice says they're eventually going to require everyone to complete the new verification, but they're doing it in groups to avoid overwhelming the system.

Anyone else notice how these 'security upgrades' always seem to happen right when people are most desperate? Seems mighty convenient timing if you ask me... 🤔

0 coins

-

Ravi Patel

conspiracy theory much? lol they're doing it because fraud is at an all-time high

0 coins

-

Isabella Oliveira

Not a conspiracy when it's happened before! Remember when they 'upgraded' the system last year and thousands of people had their payments delayed for weeks? Just saying...

You might be onto something. My payments mysteriously stopped right after they did the last 'security update'. Took 3 weeks to fix.

I called my local state representative's office about this same issue last week. They confirmed it's legitimate AND gave me a direct number to call at unemployment that actually works! DM me if you want it. The constituent services people can be super helpful with unemployment issues.

ny unemployment's communication is such a joke. send confusing messages then make it impossible to contact anyone for clarification. classic NYSDOL move 🤦‍♀️

straight up! they expect us to just figure it out with zero help

And then when you make a mistake because of THEIR poor communication, they penalize you! Make it make sense 😤

If its a 5-digit number the text came from, those are usually official. The scam texts I've gotten come from regular looking phone numbers. But still, don't click the link! Just go directly to the site.

protip: if you need to verify its real, check your online account MESSAGE CENTER (not email). If the verification request is legitimate, it will also appear in your secure message center when you log in to your unemployment account.

That's actually really smart! I just checked my message center and sure enough, the same notice is there. Thanks for this tip!

I'm so fed up with this broken system I can't even. Been on unemployment since october after getting laid off and every other week theres some new hurdle. Between the website crashing constantly, impossible phone lines, and now these confusing security texts, it's like they WANT us to fail. the whole ny unemployment system needs to be rebuilt from scratch i stg

Preach! 👏 The system is designed to be confusing on purpose to discourage people from claiming benefits they're entitled to. Change my mind.

After spending 3 weeks trying and failing to get through to ny unemployment on my own (literally hundreds of calls), I broke down and tried claimyr.com - had a real live unemployment agent on the phone within 2 hours who confirmed all my account details AND explained which notifications were legitimate. Best decision I've made in this whole unemployment nightmare.
