Got suspicious fraud call claiming to be from NY unemployment - is this legit?
I got a weird call today from someone saying they were from NY unemployment dept. They said there was a problem with my claim and they needed to verify my identity. They asked for my SSN and banking info to 'confirm my identity'. I hung up because it seemed fishy, but now I'm worried - does NYS DOL actually call people? How do I know if this was legit or a scam? Has anyone else gotten calls like this recently?

That's 100% a scam! NYSDOL will NEVER call you asking for your full SSN or banking details over the phone. I had something similar happen in January. They might call about your claim, but they'll only ask to verify the last 4 digits of your SSN, not the whole thing. If anyone asks for complete banking info or your full social, hang up immediately. You did the right thing by ending the call. If you're worried about your claim, log into your NY.gov account directly (not through any links they might have sent) and check your messages there, or call the official unemployment number yourself.

•Oh thank god I didn't give them any info! Thanks for confirming. Do you think I should report this somewhere?

•Did they say anything about freezing your benefits if you didn't verify? That's what really freaked me out about the call.

This is definitely a scam. NYSDOL has been warning about this on their website. You should report it to them and also to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. These scammers are targeting unemployment claimants specifically and they often know just enough about you to sound legitimate. Some signs it's a scam: - Asking for full SSN - Requesting banking details - Creating urgency/threats - Caller ID might even show a DOL number (they spoof government numbers) NYSDOL may call you, but they will tell you to log into your account to view secure messages. They won't ask for your full SSN or banking info over the phone.

•Thanks for the detailed info! I'll definitely report it. They did create urgency saying my payments would be suspended immediately if I didn't verify... classic scam tactic I guess.

•That's terrible about your cousin. For anyone who believes they may have fallen victim to one of these scams, immediately: 1) Contact your bank to freeze accounts, 2) Place a fraud alert with all three credit bureaus, 3) File a police report, and 4) Contact the NYSDOL fraud department to report it.

I've been trying to reach NYSDOL about a different issue with my claim for weeks and can't get through to anyone. The phone system is completely jammed up. After trying for days, I found Claimyr (claimyr.com) which got me connected to an actual agent in about 20 minutes instead of hours of redial hell. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE The agent I spoke with confirmed these scam calls are happening A LOT right now. She said NYSDOL is aware and investigating. The legitimate DOL will never ask for your full SSN or banking details over the phone.

•Thanks for the tip about Claimyr. I might need that if I can't get through to report this scam. Did the agent say if I should do anything specific after getting one of these calls?

Is anyone else getting text messages too?? I've gotten 3 in the past week saying I need to "verify my claim" with a link. I didn't click on any of them but wondering if it's related to these calls

•YES! Those texts are also scams. NYSDOL will send you messages through your online account, not random texts with links. Never click those links - they're phishing attempts to steal your login credentials or install malware on your phone.

Ugh, these scammers are EVERYWHERE now. I got the same call and the guy actually threatened me saying my benefits would be permanently cancelled if I didn't verify RIGHT NOW. When I asked why they couldn't just send me a message in my online account he got super aggressive. TOTAL SCAM. I reported it to NY unemployment through my online account (there's a fraud reporting section) and they confirmed it wasn't them calling me. Be careful everyone!!!

•That sounds exactly like my call! The pressure tactics made me suspicious. I'll definitely report through my online account, thanks for letting me know where to find that option.

Just to follow up on this thread with official information: NYSDOL has a dedicated page about fraud attempts at https://dol.ny.gov/report-fraud. They specifically warn about these phone scams. If you've received a suspicious call: 1. Do not share any personal information 2. Report the call to NYSDOL through your online account 3. Change your NY.gov ID password if you're concerned 4. Check your claim status directly through your account Stay vigilant everyone!
