Is (518)581-3567 actually from NY unemployment or a scam?

Got a call from (518)581-3567 claiming to be from the Department of Labor about my unemployment claim. They said they needed to verify some information due to a "system flag" on my account. I got suspicious because they asked me to confirm my SSN right away. I told them I'd call back through the official number instead, and they got really pushy saying my benefits would be delayed if I didn't verify right then. Hung up and checked my account online but didn't see any messages or alerts. Has anyone else gotten calls from this number? Is it actually NY unemployment or someone trying to scam me? My claim was approved like 3 weeks ago and payments have been normal so far.

SCAM SCAM SCAM!!! Legit DOL will NEVER call asking for your full SSN. They might ask for last 4 digits to verify they're talking to you but NEVER the full number. They already have it on file. I got a similar call last month from a number with the same area code. Report it.

That's what I thought, thx for confirming. Do you know how/where exactly I should report it?

After months of trying to get through on the regular number, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me connected to a real ny unemployment agent. Talking to an actual person got my issues resolved in minutes - it was the only way I could finally get my benefits processed. They have a video explaining how it works too: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

sounds too good to be true. whats the catch? they want your ssn too? 🤔

No catch - they don't need any personal info at all. They just keep calling the DOL for you and when they get through, they connect the call to your phone. Spent weeks trying before this and got nowhere

wait fr?? does this really work? ive been trying to get through for like 2 weeks

Worked for me! My claim was stuck in pending for 3 weeks, spent 10+ hours on hold trying different times and days. Used Claimyr and talked to someone same day. Got everything fixed on that call

The DOL straight up says on their website they will never ask for your full social security number on a call they initiate. Only give the last 4 digits if asked for verification. When in doubt, tell them you'll call back on the main number. legit DOL agents wont have a problem with that.

I work in cybersecurity and this is a classic phishing attempt. The scammers are getting really good at social engineering - they research enough about unemployment processes to sound official. Some tips: 1. NY unemployment will NEVER call out of the blue asking for sensitive info 2. They already have your SSN and claim details 3. Real DOL calls usually happen if YOU scheduled a callback or after you've been messaging with them 4. They may ask for last 4 of SSN to verify identity, but never the full number 5. They won't pressure or rush you 6. If uncertain, hang up and call the official number Also, the fact they got pushy when you wanted to verify is the biggest red flag. Legitimate government employees understand security concerns and won't pressure you. If you need to actually reach NY unemployment, claimyr.com is a legitimate service that can help get through the phone system to a real agent. I've recommended it to several clients dealing with UI issues.

This should be pinned to the top of this sub. The amount of people falling for these scams is crazy.

Thanks for the detailed explanation! Definitely raised all kinds of red flags when they started pressuring me.

yeah i got a call from a 518 number too but it was 518-485-something. They left a voicemail saying to call the main 888 number though, didn't ask for any info on vm. So that seemed legit. Yours sounds shady af

The 518-485-xxxx is actually a legit DOL number range. But even they won't ask for full SSN on a cold call.

I hate these scammers. They prey on desperate ppl that need their benefits. Some old lady in my building got scammed out of her entire back payment of benefits (like $5600) because one of these aassholes convinced her there was a "problem" with her claim. Makes me sick.🤮

same thing happened to my cousins neighbor! she's like 67 and they got her to buy gift cards to "verify her identity" or some bs. complete monsters

That's horrible. These people are the lowest of the low. Stealing from people who are already struggling.

Pro tip: If you ever get a call claiming to be from unemployment or any govt agency, tell them you'll call them back on the official number. If they resist AT ALL, it's 100% a scam. End of story.

The real DOL is basically impossible to get a human on the phone anyway 😂 I've been trying for WEEKS and nothing. When I finally did through Claimyr.com the agent told me they're severely understaffed still. So yeah, random calls asking for info = sus

Took the words right out of my mouth... can't get a human when you WANT one, suddenly they're calling you? Yeah right 🙄

Exactly! I was on hold for 3+ hours multiple days before I tried that service. Real DOL doesn't have time to be making random calls

i actualy DID get a call from NYSDOL once but they sent a message in my online account inbox first telling me to expect a call and what it would be about. they never asked for full SSN just verified last 4. and i had already been waiting for them to call me back about a issue

Google the number - if you search '(518)581-3567 scam' and find others reporting issues, there's your answer. Always remember legitimate government agencies: 1) Already have your info 2) Will understand if you want to call back on their main line 3) Won't pressure you 4) Generally don't cold-call about 'problems' I've been through the NY unemployment system twice now. When there's an issue, they usually send a letter or email, or post a message in your online account. Cold calls asking for verification are almost always scams.

Went thru something similar. Try calling the main unemployment line (1-888-209-8124) to check if there are actually issues with your claim. If you can't get through, I used claimyr.com to connect with an agent - worth every penny since they fixed all my issues in one call.

NYSDOL official guidance from their website: "The NYS Department of Labor will NEVER ask for your full Social Security number over the phone. If you receive a call from someone claiming to be from the NYS Department of Labor requesting your full Social Security number, please hang up and report the call." So yeah, defintely a scam. They're targeting unemployment claimants because they know people are anxious about their benefits.

This is 10000% a scam!!! I work at a bank and we see this ALL THE TIME. They're trying to get your info to either steal your identity or redirect your benefits to their account. Never give SSN over phone!!
