Anyone get calls from 888-581-5812 for ny unemployment? Missed it and worried

I just missed a call from 888-581-5812 this morning. I know this is usually a claims number for new york unemployment that we call into, but they called ME. I'm wondering if anyone else has gotten calls from this number and what it could be about? I tried calling back but got stuck in the automated system. I filed my claim back in August and have been receiving payments normally for about 3 months, so I'm worried something is wrong with my claim. Should I be concerned? Has anyone else gotten calls from this number and knows what they might want?

Yeah they call from that number sometimes. It could be about anything with your claim. They generally call if they need more info or have questions about something you submitted. I got a call from them last week about my work search activities. Better call them back asap before they put a hold on your benefits.

Thanks! Did they leave you a voicemail? I didn't get one and I'm worried about getting stuck in the automated system again when I call back.

Nope, they never left a VM for me. Had to call like 50 times to get through. The system is trash 🗑️

that number NEVER leaves voicemails in my experience. they expect u to just know to call back lol 🙄

After spending hours trying to get through to that stupid number, I finally found a solution. Used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and they handled the calling/waiting and got me connected to a real person. It was the only way I could talk to a live agent and they got my issue fixed in 10 minutes. Worth checking out if you can't get through. https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Is this actually real? Sounds too good to be true tbh

0 coins

Yeah its 100% real. I was skeptical too but was desperate after trying for 2 weeks to get someone on the phone. They basically just do the holding for you and then call your phone when a real person picks up.

0 coins

wait so another company can magically get through but we cant?? sounds fishy...

0 coins

Not magic lol. They just have tech that automates the calling and navigating the phone tree. Then when they get a human they connect you. Saved me so much time and stress.

Ok so I just tried this claimyr.com thing and IT WORKS. Got a call back with an actual human from unemployment in about 45 mins. Talking to the agent got my $ unlocked so fast!

Yep, that's one of the official unemployment numbers. They called me twice last month about my claim. First time was just to verify some info on my application. Second time was to tell me I needed to submit additional docs. Don't worry too much, but definitely try to call back when you can.

I'd be careful. There are a lot of unemployment scams going around. The real DOL number is 888-581-5812 but scammers can spoof that number. If they call again, don't give out your SSN or banking info unless you're 100% sure it's really them.

THIS!!! My cousin got scammed this way. They spoofed the real NY unemployment number and asked for his banking details to "verify his identity" and emptied his account. Be super careful!!!

0 coins

Omg that's terrible. Thanks for the warning. I'll be extra cautious if they call again.

how do we even know who's legit anymore? the whole system is such a mess 🤦‍♀️

It's probably just a standard check. They do random calls to verify you're still eligible. I've gotten like 4 calls from that number in the past 2 months. Sometimes they ask about job searches, sometimes they want to know if anything has changed with your employment status. NBD usually.

0 coins

Not always "NBD" tho. They called me and I missed it, then my benefits got suspended for 3 weeks until I could finally talk to someone and clear it up.

I've been dealing with NY unemployment for 14 months now and here's what I've learned about their calls: That number (888-581-5812) is definitely a legitimate DOL number. They typically call for several reasons: - To verify information on your claim - To ask about work search activities - To schedule a mandatory interview - To notify you about potential issues with your claim If you miss their call, you should absolutely try to call back ASAP. However, getting through is a nightmare. I spent 4 days, 8+ hours total trying to reach someone. The most efficient solution I found was using claimyr.com - they have a system that navigates the phone maze and waits on hold, then connects you directly to an agent when one is available. Talking to an agent got my benefits unlocked within hours instead of weeks. DON'T IGNORE the call. If they're trying to reach you, it usually means there's an issue that could affect your benefits. The worst case scenario is having your payments paused while they try to contact you. Also, make sure your contact info is updated on your online account so they can reach you if needed!

This is super helpful info, thanks for taking the time to write it all out! 👍

I just checked out that claimyr thing. How long did it take for them to get someone on the line for you?

0 coins

For me it was around 2 hours total, but they did all the waiting. I just got a call when an agent was ready to talk. Way better than me sitting on hold all day.

0 coins

do they work for all states or just new york?

0 coins

I think they work with multiple states but I only used it for NY. Their website claimyr.com should have the details.

So frustrating that they call from the same # we call them at but NEVER leave messages. Like what are we supposed to do??? I've missed their calls twice and both times my benefits got delayed for weeks.

0 coins

Anybody else notice they always seem to call at the most inconvenient times? Like when your phone is dead or you're in the shower or something? It's like they KNOW 😂

0 coins

LOL so true! They called me exactly 2 minutes after I got in the shower after waiting by my phone ALL DAY

0 coins

they called me right as i was ordering at the drive thru with a line of cars behind me 💀

0 coins

they put me on hold for 3 hours when i call them but expect me to pick up on the first ring when they call me 🤡 make it make sense

welcome to dealing with the government 😭

Try calling this number: 1-888-209-8124. That's the main NY unemployment phone number and sometimes it's easier to get through there. Ask them about the missed call when you finally reach someone. Might take a few tries.

Had the same thing happen in September. Turns out they were calling because they needed additional proof of my previous employment. No voicemail or anything! I finally got through after 3 days of calling and they told me they were about to suspend my benefits because I didn't respond fast enough. The system is ridiculous.

Protip: if you have any friends who speak other languages, have them call the non-English lines. The Spanish and Mandarin lines usually have way shorter wait times (and most agents speak English too).

0 coins

This is genius. My cousin called the Spanish line and got through in 10 minutes when the English line had him on hold for hours.

0 coins

I tried this but they just transferred me back to the English queue when they realized I don't actually speak Russian 😅

0 coins

Wow, I guess I got lucky. When they called me, I answered and it was about an issue with my work search activities. They were actually really helpful and fixed the problem during the call. If I were you, I'd keep calling back until you reach someone.

0 coins

check ur online account!! sometimes they'll send a message there about why they were trying to reach u

0 coins

Good idea, just checked but there's nothing new in my messages 😞

0 coins

Anyone else think it's crazy that in 2023 they still rely so heavily on phone calls instead of having a functional messaging system in their online portal? Every other government agency seems to be figuring this out except unemployment.

0 coins

Seriously! My bank can text me about a $5 charge but NY unemployment can't send a text about thousands of dollars in benefits? 🤦‍♂️

0 coins

they're still operating like its 1995 i swear

0 coins

The system is designed to be frustrating. They hope people give up and stop claiming benefits.

I've been getting calls from that same number for months now. Sometimes it's routine verification stuff, but other times it's more urgent. Last time they called it was because there was a discrepancy in my work history that needed to be cleared up ASAP or my benefits would be suspended. The frustrating thing is they never leave voicemails, so you have no idea if it's urgent or just routine. My advice would be to keep trying to call back, maybe early in the morning when the lines aren't as busy. Also make sure all your info is up to date in your online account - sometimes they call because they can't reach you through other methods. Don't panic too much though. If you've been getting payments regularly for 3 months, it's probably just a routine check or they need you to verify something small. But definitely don't ignore it!

0 coins

This is really helpful advice! I'm definitely going to try calling early morning tomorrow. You're right that not knowing if it's urgent or routine makes it so much more stressful. Thanks for sharing your experience - makes me feel a bit better that it might just be something routine since my payments have been consistent.

I've been dealing with NY unemployment for about 6 months now and that number has called me probably 8-10 times. Here's what I've learned: - They call for EVERYTHING - routine checks, document requests, work search verification, even just to confirm your address - They literally never leave voicemails (so annoying!) - The urgency varies wildly - sometimes it's just "hey confirm you're still looking for work" and sometimes it's "we need this info in 48 hours or your benefits stop" Since you've been getting payments regularly, it's probably not anything catastrophic. But you definitely need to call back because ignoring them is the fastest way to get your benefits suspended. Pro tip: Try calling right at 8am when they open - that's when I've had the most success getting through without waiting forever. Also keep your phone nearby for the next few days in case they call again. The whole system is frustrating but don't stress too much. Just get through to someone and find out what they need!

0 coins

Thanks for breaking this down so clearly! I'm definitely going to try calling right at 8am tomorrow. It's reassuring to hear that since my payments have been regular it's probably not anything major. Really appreciate you sharing what you've learned from dealing with this - the whole process is so confusing when you're new to it. Fingers crossed I can get through and figure out what they need!
