Got a suspicious call claiming to be from ny unemployment about fraud - is this legit?
Received a weird call yesterday from someone saying they were from the NY unemployment department. They said there was suspicious activity on my account and that I might be a victim of identity theft. They asked me to verify my SSN and date of birth to "protect my account." I didn't give them any info because it seemed fishy, but now I'm worried my unemployment benefits might be affected. They left a callback number that doesn't match any official DOL numbers I could find online. Has this happened to anyone else? Should I be concerned? I've been receiving benefits for about 3 months after getting laid off in April.

DO NOT GIVE THEM YOUR INFO! This is 100% a scam. The real NY unemployment office will NEVER call you asking for your full SSN over the phone. They might ask for the last 4 digits to verify, but never the whole thing. Report the number to the actual DOL fraud department. There's been a huge wave of these scams lately.

•Yep 100%. The legit DOL will only ask for last 4 of SSN, and they'll already have your DOB on file. They definitely don't need to "verify" info they already have.

•Thanks so much for confirming! I had a gut feeling it was a scam. Should I call the real DOL to make sure my account is actually secure?

•Yes definitely call the real DOL - but good luck getting through 🙄 Their phone system is a nightmare. Maybe try their online portal first?

After getting these scam calls for weeks I finally found a service that helped me actually reach a real NY unemployment agent. I used claimyr.com and they got me connected to an actual agent who confirmed my account was fine and put extra security on it. Best money I ever spent to get my benefits situation straightened out! Check out their explanation video: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•Is this for real? I've been trying to get through to an actual human at ny unemployment for like 2 weeks straight

•Yeah it actually works. They basically wait on hold for you and then call you when they get a live agent. Saved me hours of frustration.

•I used it last month when my account got locked. Worked exactly as advertised - got a call back in about 2 hrs with a real agent on the line. My account was fixed that same day.

•Not an ad, just relieved to finally get through. Was at my wits end after trying for days. My benefits were on hold for 3 weeks before this.

I got the same call about 2 weeks ago! Def a scam. The real DOL already has all your info. If there's actual fraud, they usually send an official letter or email through your account portal. Never give SSN over the phone.

These scammers are getting more sophisticated. They spoof the caller ID to look like its coming from the actual DOL number. The real NY unemployment dept will NEVER ask for complete SSN over phone. They might ask for last 4 digits to verify identity, but they already have your full info in there system. If you're worried about your account, log in directly to the official website or call the official number (not the one they provided).

•They DID have a spoofed number that looked official! How are they even allowed to do that??

•caller ID spoofing is super easy to do now, anyone with basic tech skills can make it look like their calling from anywhere. the system is like ancient technology that was never updated for security 🤦♂️

Listen, NYS DOL is completely overwhelmed with fraud cases right now. My cousin works there and says they're buried in identity theft claims. If you get a call claiming to be from them, hang up and call the official number yourself. I repeat: CALL THEM, don't call whatever number the potential scammer gives you.

•I was able to get through using claimyr.com - they wait on hold for you and connect you with a live agent. My issue was resolved in one day after weeks of trying on my own.

OMG THIS JUST HAPPENED TO ME YESTERDAY!!!!! I almost gave them my info but something felt off so I hung up. The guy had a weird accent and the connection was bad, but he knew my name which freaked me out.

•They can find basic info like your name from data breaches or social media. Doesn't mean they're legit.

Here's what to know about unemployment fraud scams: - NY unemployment will NEVER call asking for your full SSN - They already have your DOB and other identity info - They don't call about fraud - they send official notices through mail or your online portal - Real DOL staff identify themselves with ID numbers - If concerned, hang up and call the official number yourself - Report suspicious calls to the NYS fraud department Unfortunately getting through to the real DOL can be nearly impossible with their overloaded phone system. After weeks of trying, I finally used claimyr.com which connected me with a real agent who helped secure my account. They basically wait on hold for you and call when they reach an agent. Totally worth it for peace of mind when dealing with potential fraud. Don't let scammers intimidate you - they try to create panic so you'll give up personal info without thinking.

•It's a service that calls the unemployment office for you and waits on hold. When they get a human, they call you and connect you. Saved me like 4 hours of hold music lol. Website is pretty straightforward.

You should report this to both the NY DOL fraud department AND the FTC. These scammers are everywhere now and the government needs to crack down harder.

•The FTC actually has a whole website about unemployment scams: reportfraud.ftc.gov

just to play devils advocate... what if it actually WAS the real DOL calling about fraud? how would we even know? 🤔

•Real DOL calls are pretty distinctive. They identify themselves with ID numbers, they already know your info (so they don't need to "verify" everything), and they direct you to official channels like your online account.

•They don't call about fraud lol. They send official letters or messages through your online portal. Source: happened to me last year.

I know EXACTLY what you're talking about. These scammers are running a huge operation targeting unemployment recipients. My roommate works in cybersecurity and said they've seen a massive uptick in these DOL scams since covid.

The same thing happened to my sister and she freaked out and gave them her info 😫 She had to freeze her credit, file police reports, and it was a NIGHTMARE getting her identity theft issues resolved. Do NOT engage with these people!!!

•Omg that's terrible! Is she ok now? Did they actually steal money from her account?

•They tried to open credit cards in her name but she caught it fast enough. Took about 3 months to get everything sorted out though. Such a headache!

FYI - I called ny unemployment yesterday (the REAL number) and they confirmed they're seeing a huge wave of these scam calls. The rep told me they're sending out official warnings soon. Save the real DOL number in your contacts so you know when it's actually them calling.

hot take: the ny unemployment system is so broken and understaffed that scammers can easily take advantage. if people could actually reach the real DOL easily, these scams wouldn't work 🤷♂️

•facts 💯 The whole system needs a complete overhaul

•This is so true. I work in government (not DOL) and the systems are ancient, the staff is overwhelmed, and there's no budget to fix anything properly.

Forward the number they gave you to the real DOL fraud department. They keep track of these scammers and sometimes can shut them down.
