Received weird letter about NY unemployment fraud investigation - help!

I just received a letter in the mail from NY unemployment claiming there's suspicious activity on my account. The letter says my benefits might be suspended while they investigate possible fraud. Thing is, I haven't filed for unemployment in over 8 months! I checked my account online and someone has been filing weekly certifications using my info since February! They got over $7,300 so far. I immediately changed my password and called the fraud hotline but nobody answers. When I try the regular unemployment line, I just get an automated message saying high call volume. What should I do? Has anyone dealt with this identity theft situation before? I'm freaking out because I might need to file for real unemployment next month as my contract job is ending.

CyberSamurai

YES! This happened to me last week. Same exact thing - someone filed using my SSN and got about $6k before I even knew. I panicked but I finally got someone on the phone using this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com). They kept dialing and got me through to a real human. The agent froze everything and had me fill out an identity theft affidavit. Talking to an agent got my account locked down so fast - definitely worth checking out https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

It worked for me! You pay them to keep calling and they transfer you when they get through. Saved me from throwing my phone out the window after being on hold forever.

hmm I've been burned by so many of these 'services' before... what makes this different?

difference is they actually got me through. I was skeptical too but when someone is stealing your identity u get desperate. I'd still be stuck in the phone tree without it.

is it like a robocall thing? how's it work exactly?

They basically call repeatedly for you until they get through. Then when there's a real person, they connect you. No need to sit on hold yourself. It was the only way I could talk to a live agent

OMG this is happening everywhere right now! My cousin and her roommate both got those letters too. There's a huge fraud ring targeting NY unemployment. You need to: 1) File a police report ASAP, 2) Contact all 3 credit bureaus and freeze your credit, 3) Report it to the FTC at identitytheft.gov. Don't wait!!

Welcome to the club 🤮 Someone used my info last year and it took EIGHT FREAKING MONTHS to resolve. The system is totally broken. Keep calling and document everything. And check if your info was leaked in any data breaches - might explain how they got your SSN.

Eight months!?? I can't wait that long... did you eventually get it resolved? What finally worked?

Yea it was absolute hell. What finally worked was getting my state representative involved. Call your assembly person - they have special contacts at nysdol who can push things through.

I swear NY unemployment has the WORST security system ever. This happened to my brother too. Fill out form LC-485 for identity theft and upload a copy of your ID, birth certificate, and social security card to your account. Also no joke - contact your state rep. They got my brother's case fixed in 2 weeks after he spent months getting nowhere.

Just a heads up - its form LC-483 not 485. Made that mistake and wasted a whole week 🤦‍♂️

Oh shit ur right. Sorry bout that! LC-483 for identity theft, LC-485 is for something else

If someone has been filing claims for 3 months with ur info, its gonna be a nightmare to get fixed. Tbh I'd try Claimyr.com to get someone on the phone TODAY. Thats what I did when my account got hacked. The unemployment office is a black hole unless you can actually talk to a specialist who handles fraud cases. Don't bother with emails they never respond.

100% worked for me. I got through in about an hour when I'd been trying on my own for 2 weeks. It's basically just a service that sits on hold so you don't have to. When they get a person they call u.

I work in cybersecurity and this is part of a massive identity theft operation targeting unemployment systems nationwide, not just NY. They buy your info on the dark web (usually from data breaches) and file before you even know. IMPORTANT: File a report with the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center too - ic3.gov - as this crosses state lines

Yep this is facts. Friend of mine works at DOL and said they've seen a 400% increase in unemployment fraud since January. It's organized crime stuff.

This is literally happening to me right now!!! The letter scared the crap out of me cause I haven't filed in over a year. I've been calling the fraud number for THREE DAYS with no answer. This is completely insane. Let me know if you get through to anyone!!

It's so frustrating! Have you tried going to an actual office? I'm considering just showing up in person.

I tried going to the office in Brooklyn but they wouldnt even let me in without an appointment 😤 And guess how you get an appointment? BY PHONE! its a total catch-22

This exact thing happened to me!! Here's what you absolutely need to do ASAP: - File a police report immediately and get a copy - Call the NYSDOL fraud hotline constantly (I used claimyr.com to finally get through after days of trying) - Submit Form LC-483 (identity theft form) with copies of your ID - File a report at identitytheft.gov - Freeze your credit at all three bureaus - Contact your bank and check for other suspicious activity - Set up credit monitoring - Contact your state assembly person (seriously, this was what finally fixed mine) DON'T wait on this. The longer the fraud continues, the harder it gets to untangle. When I finally got someone on the phone through Claimyr, they were able to flag my account and stop the payments immediately. The entire process took about 5 weeks to fully resolve, but the most important thing was stopping the fraudulent payments ASAP. Best of luck - this situation is absolutely terrible but fixable if you're persistent!

Thanks so much for this detailed response! Did you have any issues filing for legitimate unemployment later after this happened?

Ava Johnson

Yes - you'll need to get a special PIN after the fraud is resolved to file again. Keep ALL your documentation. I had to submit everything twice.

How much did that claimyr thing cost? worth it?

honestly it was the best money i've ever spent to get this nightmare fixed. Sitting on hold for 7+ hours a day was killing me.

dont waste ur time with the regular number. call 1-888-209-8124 and as SOON as it starts talking press 9 then 2 then 1. sometimes this gets u to a different queue. might take a few tries.

i went through this exact hell in March. First they'll tell you it will take 2-3 weeks. Then they'll say 4-6 weeks. Then they'll say 8-10 weeks. Its all BS. You need to either 1) use a service to get thru on the phone (I used claimyr) or 2) go nuclear and contact your state rep AND local news. I did both and magically my case was 'expedited' 👀

Andre Dubois

This is exactly what I was afraid of... did you ever get the money back that was stolen?

0 coins

-

Connor Byrne

No because I wasnt the one who received it - the scammer got it. They just cleared my account so I could file legitimately later. Its absolutely infuriating.

Pro tip from someone who used to work at NYSDOL: Call exactly at 7:58am (they open at 8). That's when the queue is shortest. And don't waste time with the general number - use the fraud specific line: 1-866-435-1277. Keep pressing 0 when the automated system tries to transfer you.

I tried this for TWO WEEKS. never got through. The system is completely overwhelmed right now.

Has anyone successfully resolved this WITHOUT having to talk to someone on the phone? I've been trying for weeks 😭

0 coins

-

Paolo Rizzo

Nope. You 100% need to speak to a fraud specialist. Letters, emails, online forms all go into the void. Try claimyr.com - that's what finally worked for me.

I got mine fixed by going to my state senator's office in person. They have special contacts.

I don't wanna freak you out even more but check ALL your accounts. When this happened to me, they had also tried to open credit cards in my name. It's rarely JUST unemployment fraud.

just an fyi for everyone dealing with this - there's a special task force for unemployment fraud now. google 'NYSDOL ID.me verification' - they're using this new system to verify everyone's identity. might help speed things up.

ID.me is legit - used it for my issue. Takes like 20 min to verify but worth it

calling the fraud hotline is useless these days. I spent a whole month trying. Finally used Claimyr.com (its a service that keeps calling for you) and got through same day. talking to an agent got my $ situation fixed in under a week. dont waste ur time on hold.

This is happening because NY unemployment doesn't verify identity properly. It's a total cluster right now. My roommate's going through the same thing. The fraud department is completely overwhelmed. If you go the regular route it'll take 2-3 months minimum to resolve.
