Someone filing ny unemployment under my name with wrong SSN
So this is crazy. I received a letter from NY unemployment in the mail yesterday saying they need more information to process my claim. I haven't filed for unemployment since 2021! I logged into my account and someone has been trying to file weekly claims using my name and address but with a completely different social security number since April 2023. I tried calling the fraud department but after waiting 2 hours I got disconnected. I'm freaking out because I'm worried this will affect my taxes or something. Has anyone dealt with this kind of identity theft with unemployment before? What should I do next?

This happened to me last summer. Someone filed using my name but a completely different SSN too. Call the fraud department ASAP and file a police report. You need to let them know you didn't file those claims. I had to wait on hold for like 3 hours before I finally got through.

β’Did you eventually get it resolved? I'm so stressed about this

β’Yeah eventually. Took about 6 weeks tho. They sent me a form to fill out and return. Make sure you keep copies of EVERYTHING

β’Thanks for the tip about keeping copies. Did it affect your taxes at all?

β’6 weeks is actually pretty fast from what ive seen. My cousin had this happen and it took almost 4 months to get fully resolved π©

After days of trying to reach someone at ny unemployment about a similar issue, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me a callback from an actual agent! Talking to a real person got my issue resolved way faster than I expected. It was the only way I could finally get through to report the fraud. They have a YouTube video explaining how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

β’Yeah it worked for me! They called on my behalf and when they got an agent, they connected the call to my phone. Saved me hours of waiting on hold

I filed a police report when this happened to me. Also froze my credit at all three credit bureaus right away. Contact the FTC too - they have an identity theft reporting system. And keep trying to reach unemployment. The fraud unit is probably swamped right now but you NEED to get through to them.

β’Thanks I'll definitely freeze my credit. Didn't even think of that

β’yeah do it RIGHT NOW. like stop reading this and go do it. equifax, experian, and transunion websites all let you do it online

Call first thing in the morning the second they open. Like literally be dialing at 7:59am. I got through right away doing this when someone filed under my name in December.

This exact thing happened to me two months ago! Here's what worked for me: 1. File a police report immediately - you'll need this for documentation 2. Call the fraud department every day until you get through (I finally got through using claimyr.com after trying for a week on my own) 3. Send a letter via certified mail to NYSDOL explaining the situation 4. File a report with the FTC at identitytheft.gov 5. Freeze your credit at all three bureaus 6. Check your credit reports for any other suspicious activity 7. Put fraud alerts on your accounts Don't panic - this is more common than you'd think. The fact that they used a different SSN means they don't actually have yours, which is good news. But you still need to act fast. I got mine resolved in about 3 weeks after I finally got through to someone. The documentation is the most important part - keep copies of EVERYTHING.

β’Thank you for such detailed steps! Did you have to go in person to file the police report?

Carmen Diaz
β’Nope! I did it all online through my local precinct's website. Super easy, took like 15 minutes.

β’This is really good advice. I'd add one thing - make copies of all the mail you get from unemployment about this. You might need it later.

This is happening SO MUCH right now in NY. There's apparently a huge fraud ring targeting the unemployment system. Def contact the state attorney general's office too - they have a whole task force for this now.

β’I read an article that said ny unemployment lost like $11 billion to fraud since 2020. BILLION with a B. π€―

β’Not surprised. Their security is garbage. My 10 year old could probably hack it π

Change all your passwords immediately!!! And setup 2-factor authentication on everything if you haven't already. The fact they have your name and address means they might try to hack other accounts.

Check your credit reports too! Sometimes these scammers will file for unemployment as part of a larger identity theft scheme. Make sure there aren't any accounts or loans you don't recognize.

The NYSDOL fraud department is completely overwhelmed right now. I work at a bank and we're seeing tons of these cases. Your best bet is to: 1. File a police report 2. Send a written statement to NYSDOL via certified mail 3. Keep detailed records of everything 4. Be persistent about following up The good news is that since they used a different SSN, they don't have your actual social. But you should still take it seriously.

β’This π Certified mail is key because it creates a paper trail proving you reported it

β’Would regular mail with delivery confirmation work too or does it need to be certified specifically?

β’Certified is best - you get proof they received it AND who signed for it

my buddy works at unemployment (not in NY but still) and says they're seeing record levels of this exact scam. apparently the scammers file with real names/addresses but fake SSNs hoping some will slip through. its a numbers game for them.

Have you checked your mail forwarding status with USPS? Sometimes these scammers will try to forward your mail to get more of your documents. Happened to my sister last year as part of an unemployment scam.

I had to deal with this in February. Total nightmare. I finally got through to someone using Claimyr (claimyr.com) after trying for weeks on my own. They wait on hold for you and call when there's an agent. Talking to a real person made all the difference - got my case marked as fraud within minutes once I actually got through to someone.

You need to document EVERYTHING. Take screenshots of what you see in your account. Print the letter they sent you. Start a journal with dates and times of every call you make. Trust me, this will be important later if there are any tax issues.

i recommend calling ur state representative's office too. My unemployment fraud case was stuck for months until I called my assemblyman. They have special contacts at agencies and got my issue fixed in a week.

β’Yep this works. My state senator's office helped me get through to unemployment when I couldn't for weeks. They have a constituent services team specifically for this.

Contact all three credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion) and put a fraud alert on your account. It's free and lasts a year. This makes it harder for anyone to open new accounts in your name.

If regular calling doesn't work, try this method that worked for me: call right at 7:58am, press the options to get to fraud dept, then when you inevitably get the "we're experiencing high call volume" message, hang up and immediately call back. Repeat this process about 10-15 times in a row. On my 13th try I got through to the queue instead of getting disconnected. Worth a shot!

check if your mail is being forwarded!! these scams often start with the thieves forwarding your mail to get unemployment documents. you can check at usps.com if any forwarding orders have been placed for your address
